Sehr schön, dafür erst einmal ein +. Allerdings dürfte das Instrument mal gestimmt werden, und neuer Hammerkopffilz wäre klanglich auch nicht so von Nachteil ;)
If this piano is out-of-tune, then it confirms that my hearing is "flat". I remaster audio tracks, and tend to think they sound better leaning towards a minor key. This is a great song, and kudos to Brandotuomikoski for finding a machine for next-to-nothing. Keep it up RagtimeFreak86! This is where it's at....
I've always wondered about these, was it playable by hand as well or only with the mounting of a scroll? Were the scrolls exchangable? Did one scroll only play one song or like the equivalent of an album at the time? Were they electrical or wind-up? What is this type of piano called and how common were they in the heights of their day?
player piano, pretty common I'm guessing, they still used them back when my mom was in her twenties, and she's in her forties now. You could exchange scrolls, I've played one by pedaling with my feet, just by pressing up and down gradually on the pedal. It played one song per sroll.
For my answer I'd like to add to Wisher that more than one song could fit on a scroll. Also the faster you pedal, the faster it goes. You can pedal with one foot, two at a time, etc, even if the easiest is two alternating.
And think of exchanging scrolls like a roll of paper towels.
if it goes faster when you pedal faster, something is wrong. the tempo should remain the same, you can speed up or slow down with the tempo lever. pedalling faster should make the music louder so you can put your own dynamics into the song. of course with a suction box like this player you can't do that, which makes it sound so mechanical
Player pianos from what I've heard on other videos were quite popular in the 1910's and 1920's, and outsold regular pianos. Also, during that time period Nickelodeons and orchestrions were common as dust.
Used to play this roll when I was in grammar school.Grandparents bought the player piano new in 1915. still have it! If anyone wants it, it is located in north chicago, Illinois. Send letter etc to Player Piano, 1949 W School St, chicago, Illinois 60657. I want to sell the apartment building in about six months. I rebuild the piano and player action works well.
just for the info, no piano ever should sound out of tune, some people feel that way as it was often played in clubs and bars on piano's that were never serviced.. I doubt Thomas Henry Lodge even would play on such piano's
I wish my piano could play that well.

Listening to this reminds me of the police chase sequence in a certain Buster Keaton film.

aaah yes, another out of tune player!
This is a unique sound.
I've heard some midi keyboards try to digitise that sound to emulate it. funny!
Remind me of the old saloon pianees in the westerns.

Better music than today. Too much modern technology has ruined music. Pianos, violins, harps, etc are great to listen to.

@rob91368 I'm not surprised! And if you ask me, the electronic voice-enhancing equivalent to cosmetic surgery is s***!

I'd say they were very common.
It would be awesome to see them make a come back.

Well then there IS something wrong with my piano. Maybe I didn't realize it...
Although from the looks of it, appears to be fine, so I'd better not mess with it =D

They need to continue production of these magical Player Piano's of the 1900's, extinction is not wanted!!

Envy the owner of this piano. Prefer Frederick Hodges playing it though, but then this could be bought for a price and he'll never be for sale!

I do not know where you get the idea that this piano is out of tune. None of the notes sound at all flat to me.
ImFrom1900 4 years ago
there are loads of fals beats in every note...
being out of tune has nothing to do with being up to concert pitch....
