He makes more then enough to support himself. Professional gamers make roughly 100.000$ per year.

Of course, this amount depends on their success in tournaments.

And they have sponsors, they sign contracts, make public apperances...

Generally, they make more then enough. The question is, what will they do in 10 years time. Fingers will get slower, younger players will start to dominate the scene. Then, you can hope to stay in the industry as something else, like a reporter, etc
