God this album was so ahead of its time its ridiculous. Even now a-days, there arent many albums that are as meticulously put together as this one. It must have been hell figuring out how to do loops and samples back in the late 70's.
I turn myself around, Im moving backwards and forwards Im moving twice as much as I was before Ill keep on digging to the center of the earth Ill be down in there moving the in the room... Im walking a line-visiting houses in motion Im walking a line-just barely enough to be living Get outa the way-no time to begin This isnt the time-so nothing was done Not talking about-not many at all Im turning around-no trouble at all Two different houses surround you, round you Im walking a line-divide and
Never get to say much, never get to talk Tell us a little bit, but not too much Right about then, is where she give up She has closed her eyes, she has give up hope Im walking a line-i hate to be dreaming in motion Im walking a line-just barely enough to be living Get outa the way-no time to begin This isnt the time-so nothing was done Not talking about-not many at all Im turning around-no trouble at all Im keeping my fingers behind me, hind me Im walking a line-divide and dissolve.
The elephant instrument who movieroderyk was kind enough to clue us into is a trumpet? The gentleman doesn't appear in the liner notes. What a curious omission. That guy's solo is such a rush and has been such a rush that never lost it's punch even after all these years.
Thank you for sharing that knowledge. I have my Remain in Light Album, purchased when it first came out. I pulled the LP out of the album the other day and couldn't believe a mint condition lyric sheet was folded up inside. :)
Oh yes, this remarkable solo is played on trumpet. I was surprised too :). Jon Hassell colaborated with plenty of artists (i.e. David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel - Passion)
He knows how to create incredible soud:
Try it on you tube: Jon Hassell & Maariffa Street 2009 4/7
At that point in time this was the music...no doubt. And to these ears it's still tight and more then that. As usual the bass is always goin on their tracks...she plays great.
...but here the solos at the break and at the end kill me...some kind of extra terrestrial harem music.
@jamesedwardtheobald I can never hear this album right as the copy I bought in 1981 was pressed a bit off-center or whatever you call it when it sounds vari-speed or slow every couple of seconds, like it drags ; it never can sound all the same speed to me now.
@TheKenfig heh, that's very interesting! the mind is an interesting place!~ i guess i don't miss vinyl too terribly, though the warmth of cassettes was nice and they lasted longer than records, though wow and flutter would eventually set in...
@jamesedwardtheobald I like vinyl myself for my old albums in good condition, but I also like the sound of some really good re-mastered cds, like some Stones, Dylan, & Moody Blues I bought on SACD. In 1981 I also bought 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' by David Byrne / Brian Eno, a very good album, similar to this Talking Heads one
@TheKenfig i think CD really appealed to me when i started listening to john hassell. hearing his stuff on digital was a joy - no crackle and pop, and i had anti static mats with the fluid cleaner, etc, - hearing a crackle on a tune that should be meditative was a mood killer for me. i destroyed many vinyl copies of 'my life in the bush of ghosts' as well, due to practicing - as well as a number of jean luc ponty albums. easy and exciting tunes to practice too!
@jamesedwardtheobald cd is great for VERY quiet passages on tracks where there is near silence or instruments played very gently or recorded distanly, like on some earlier Pink Floyd and other prog bands like Moodies, King Crimson etc. What do you practice ? Bass, drums ?
@TheKenfig guitar and bass, keyboards and trumpet, fusion and jazz, though i have been very lazy lately. hop over to my channel and check out the three little tunes there, i play all parts on them, '500...." is the most recent....
@jamesedwardtheobald That is excellent and the '500' one is very much like two albums I have & love : 'Caravanserai' and 'Welcome' by Santana. Other Jazz / Rock ones I like are 'Aja' Steely Dan, 'Fourth' by Soft Machine, Stings more commercial 'Dream Of The Blue Turtles'. I play guitar myself a bit
I dunno, I think this is my favorite album from them, except for "Name of this Band" which doesn't count because it's like 30 songs LOL. Houses in Motion.... Great Curve.... The rhythm tracks were awesome.

It is Jon Hassell on trumpet. Here, his riffs evidence his having been a student of the Raga maestro Pandit Pran Nath.

@ShivadamParvati I had a colab album between Brian Eno and Jon Hassell..can't remember the name but Hassell is extremely influenced by "world music"

Jon hassell and eno did an album, and the instrument is featured prominently. it's like the bowels of a yak or something. But it is fantastic.

For a long time I felt without style or grace
Wearing shoes with no socks in cold weather
I knew my heart was in the right place
I knew Id be able to do these things.
And as we watch him digging his own grave
It is important to know that was where hes at
He cant afford to stop...that is what he believe
Hell keep on digging for a thousand years.

May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties' Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.
