Her husbands's full name was James Barclay Stringer Davis. They lived in Gerards Cross Buckinghamshire. They are buried in the church yard of St James Church in Gerards Cross. He died on the 29th of August 1973 aged 74.
She had a lot of tragedy going on around her in her early life, caused by mental illness/depression and there was even even murder. She, herself, suffered from depression, but her husband, Stringer Davis, was devoted to her, even nursing her through her Altzeimers problems in late life.
Through all that tragedy, she shone and gave so much pleasure to others. A real trouper!
She was wonderful, got the set of 4 films in Miss Marple. Murder most foul was on channel 4 this afternoon. She reminds me of my grandmother during these films. My husband bought me her biography for Christmas a couple of years ago. Will never forget her.
We often forget she only made 4 films for MGM as Miss Marple! Seek out her Oscar winning peformance in The VIPs where she outshone Taylor and Burton! I liked her in The Runaway Bus with Frankie Howerd and Petula Clarke - she was a villain in that! Miss Robin Hood and Curtain Up are gems too. As for The Happiest Days of Your Life and Blithe Spirit.. sheer class! A true Dame of the Realm!
The strange thing about the four MGM "Marple" films was that only two of them were genuine Marple stories. Another one was a Poirot story and the other was completely made up! Her husband was Stringer Davis, who also appeared in them. He was a character actor in his own right, but she insisted that he appear with her in many of her latter films.
@lincsposter .. You have rattled off perfectly, most of Margaret's fabulous films ....BUT one illudes me, she was helping someone look after a Mermaid... I think it was called 'Miranda' but I'm not quite sure, I am going to have to look her up on google aren't I...
Of the three women I recall who played Miss Marple, Margaret Rutherford, Joan Hickson and Julia McKenzie, I felt that Joan Hickson was best. But MR excelled in almost anything else she ever appeared in, especially when Alistair Sim was her sparring partner. One of Britain's best troupers!
@crossleydd42 Joan Hickson was more of a serious Miss Marple but Margaret Rutherford was so much fun to watch. I love those facial expressions she used to pull.
To experience the very best of the best is to see Margaret Rutherford and alistair Simm sparring against each other in any one of the several films they appeared in together. They are a delight to watch and clearly relished every moment and every line they delivered. Coming basically from the same mould they were of an era now long gone and sadly we will never see their like again. This is after all the age of the 'Blockbuster' movie !
One of the Greatest Actresss ever. Always Brings a Smile to my face when she is on Screen and She just Gets Better and Better. What a Incredible Talent, There is no one that even comes close to her Talents.
when the world scared me as a little boy, I would watch this rambunctious, quick-witted lady on the TV, and then everything would be all right again. what an actress.
Question, were are the actresses like her today? Real women who look like your grandmother, great aunt or neighbor and with those wonderful double chins to boot. She truly represented a type of British women that has all but disappeared. She was a classic act. God bless you Margaret, you've been a good friend to me for years.
@Buffalobigboy69 True, unfortunately British women like her are a lost breed. Modern brit women are mostly trashy sluts. No class or good dictum like these women of yesteryears. That is also true for american women. In a few years all those old ladies who embody the true spirit of britain and america will be dead and we will be left with sloppy, slutty and in somes cases ugly women. That is because the west gave up class in the late 60s to be liberal and that is why women are not women anymore
yes indeed [mr stringer] Stringer Davies was her husband, and appeared, in a lot of films with her, usually called his real name "Stringer" was this in fact due to MR pulling strings as, as often been suggested? who knows, i agree that no one as ever made a better miss marple, "a personal choice" but that must be temperd with the fact, that she did not portray her as the book was, and that agatha christie is on record as stating she hated what MR did with her character.
@BritishTributes Art and performance has always been open to interpretation and personal taste. Take Sherlock Holmes for instance; so many have portrayed the character (Rathbone & Brett were the best I thought). Rutherford simply made me enjoy Miss Marple and she made the character come alive and be extremely interesting. Sometimes artistic license is badly needed with some books made into movies.
I in a Fantasy world,i should have wanted to have lived next door to Ms Rutherford and mr Davies,on one side and Dame Hilda Bracket and Dr Hinge on the other, with Wilfred Hyde White across the road and Joan Hickson nearby in a tiny village with thatched cottages, all in a peaceful world.
Did you know that Roy Stringer Davies who played her husband in Miss Marple was her real husband in life. How sweet is that and another point worth mentioning Joan Hickson who took over the role as Miss Marple was actually the cook in Murder she said. Wonder what Miss Hickson felt like when she actually played Miss Marple in Murder she said I bet she had loads of happy memories.
Wonderful tribute. Dame M.Rutherford perfected the role of the eccentric, loveable old lady (who didn't wish to have a grandmother like her?). I don't care if she didn't match the original description from Christie, she will be the best Miss Marple, ever.
Plus I second the question: the music is pretty nice, care to share the name of it?
thanks for posting!...i was 12 when MR died...i loved the Marple series, but fell in love with MR's Marple, discovering her at an early age on PBS...truly a remarkable actress and character...i like all the Marple character's, but i love margaret rutherford...she is THE MISS MARPLE!
Just a little note for all you MR fans... The lovely man who played Mr Stringer... was in fact her real-life husband Stinger Davis... and he pops up in all the Marple films... What a fantastic actress and wonderfully eccentric woman to boot...
Margaret Rutherford perfected the role of Miss Marple. No one has come close to her portrayal of this character. The actresses who have played Miss Marple since Miss Rutherford have been so extremely inadequate to say the least !!!!! I was told that her male sidekick in her Marple movies was actually her husband in real life.
Cheers to Margaret Rutherford.........I love her "Miss Marple." ***smiles*****
@skyblueeyes777 Couldn't agree with you more. She was THE Miss Marple! She made me laugh so much. I wish they would show her as Miss Marple on telly now instead of all the rubbish that's on nowadays. The films may be old but are very funny and entertaining.
@skyblueeyes777 ... You are right indeed... 'Mr Stringer', Stringer Davies was her husband in real life. Margaret always looked like she was having a total blat in whatever she filmed, the ever presant twinkle in the eyes makes me smile when ever I watch one of her films...
Marvellous lady and cracking stalwart of Brithish Films in the 40's 50's and probably more after that too...

@mickh18 ... What a wonderful tribute to an amazing lady, many many thanks for posting this, all those fabulous photos, I not sure of all the films but I guessed a few...Margaret certainly had a very expressive face didn't she..

My very best regards to you from Wales UK ... :0)x
