  • I'm American and I thought that back when FOX had the NHL, the glow puck was the greatest thing since goalies started personalizing their helmets... and sliced bread. Now with HD, it'll be a little bit of overkill. We don't need the puck to glow certain colors for speed or have it shadowed when the puck is along the near boards now that at least 2/3rds of American and Canadian fans have an HDTV to watch some hockey.

  • when did they introduce this new puck!?!?

  • i like the glowing puck

  • I think that the glowing puck or puck tracker should be optional on webcasts, where the viewer could turn it on or off at his or her own discretion, just like the pause or rewind features.

  • How hard is it really to see a black puck on white ice?

  • @TheNamelessAccount Very with older televisions using interlaced technology. Nowadays with HD and progressive format, not so much. Back when Fox did it, there was actually a good argument for it. These days it's not really needed.

  • don't be assholes, laziness and eyesight aren't synonymous.

  • This isn't as bad as the thing that Fox did, where the puck would glow different colors depending on how hard it was shot.

  • i thought HD put an end to any reason for any of this.

  • Are you americans so damn lazy that you don't want to have to follow the puck when it's moving? Our eyes are no better than yours; you don't see us whining about it.

  • im american and i hate the puck tracking thing. its distracting and it ruins the game.

  • I do think the puck tracking gets a little distracting though. When I see it I end up just focusing on the puck and miss all the action around it. I don't think staring at a moving puck is all that exciting. When I watch the game I don't even really think about where the puck is. I know where it is by the action of the players.

  • Im Canadian and have to agree; Canadians are very elitist and arrogant when it comes to hockey. We dont watch the American networks so who cares if they animate a puck on replays. I actually didnt mind the Fox puck. It certainly didnt offend me.

  • This is not nearly as bad as when Fox was doing it with the live play. I actually don't mind it much during replays.

But with hi-def becoming commonplace, this is not nearly as necessary

  • @robdmhaze lol don't post about things you have no idea what you're talking about on. yeah babe ruth was one of the best baseball players ever and he wasn't the most physically fit person, but i guarantee not one hockey player could hit a baseball 1/10000th as good as him and that's coming from an american hockey fan. and just so you know, babe ruth was also one of the best pitchers of his time too.

  • @wuamiller babe ruth was a fat ass piece of shit, yes he could hit but he also stuck out about 50% of the time, and no he was not one of the best pitchers of his time at all, look that one up if you like, he was a fat ass. and thats it. but he could hit the ball, when he didn't miss it.... even his team mates didnt like him, thats on the record...

  • It was a travesty? Maybe to the typical Canadian hockey snob it was a travesty, that or you're a 12yr old that's grown up in the HD era. and has never watched hockey on a traditional tv set. Other than that.. tell me again, why the glow puck sucked so bad?

  • @Stompulator44 it made the game look like it was for retarded people.. and video game esq. lets see them use it in the NFL or Baseball, and see how much they are made fun of. very unnecessary. plus it just look stupid.

  • god that looks like shit.....literally it looks like crosby shot a turd at osgood.

  • How hard is it to follow a dark puck on a white surface? Seriously.....

  • @MeanGene79 when it's 3 inches wide and moving 90 miles an hour. not to mention a camera pretty far away from the ice surface. and if it's in standard def, good luck. i'm not making excuses here, as i've only been a hockey fan for three years but i've gotten used to it. but for the casual american fan (which i am no longer), it's pretty tough.

  • @fearthehawksndcavs24 Even when I was a casual fan it wasn't hard at all. Now following a golf driver, especially on a cloudy day, that can be tricky.

  • @MeanGene79 Americans don't usually have a problem distinguishing black from white...

  • Why is this necessary? I thought the majority of Americans had no problem distinguishing black from white.

  • @MsBryanfreeman no it isn't.

  • The problem is not color, black on white is obviously the better contrast, the problem is motion. The puck is too small and goes too fast, plus all the stick blades are taped black, plus skates are usually black, everything combined makes the puck hard to follow. I don't think Canadians can track the puck better than others, they just don't care not knowing where the puck is, when you wath a game you usually know for the players movements rather for where's the puck.

  • @petruza You can easily see the puck, you just have to be not a retard.

  • All that is...slow motion cameras around the regular ones. That's nothing like the glow puck.

  • Je veux jamais voir ça sur RDS!

  • I've never met anybody who had that much trouble following the puck. I actually find that the glow makes it more difficult to see where the puck actually is.

  • Christ, that is awful. Give me the CBC any day.

  • Americans have problems tracking a black object on a sheet of white? Are you fucking kidding me?

  • Id probably watch Hockey if they puck was visible like this

  • as bettman says "There are more hockey fans in America than there are people in Canada". Suck it canada.

  • now all the americans need is a glowing football. :P

  • Haha. plenty of americans watch hockey... Bettman just keeps putting teams in florida and arizona where there hasnt been ice in 2 million years...

And, honestly, i dont see what the big fucking deal is with the glowpuck. its kinda fucking cool to see a read comet streak when a guy shoots over 70!

I love you canada, but stop getting your panties in a fucking bunch over that whole thing...

  • the only thing they should fix is the dead angle when there's a battle along the inside board. Can't see the puck at all then

  • @WelcomeToZomboCom Should push back the first 4 or 5 rows, and put in a full plexigass type bottom (even if it's more solid so it doesn't break), and that'll fix that problem.

  • @bigpoppa1234 teams would never do that, those rows are worth premium...

  • A glowing puck or anything like it is anoying while watching. It needs to stay in video games where it belongs. EA NHL 2010 is great. I do admit to using the minimum shadow feature in the game but it is not necessary in real games on tv. Replays maybe. But I have ADHD and I have no problem watching it on tv. So it being used in replays is not really necessary either.

  • only idiots need a glowing puck...

  • the "glowing puck" was a great idea! I hate watching the game and not being able to see where the puck is!

  • Remember when you just kept your eye on the puck and that was the way to watch the games? Its not like they have a tracer tail on baseballs or footballs or even golf balls....... can we ditch the gimmick and focus on the game?

  • Well you havent watched baseball on TBS or Fox. They both have a pitch trackers with a comet tail and cross hair were the pitch lands. Nor have you watched the NFL network, were they track a red glow to the football for long passes. Call it a gimmick, but it helps viewers and follow the action in REPLAY.

  • @scepteroffire It's a cheap attempt to gain more leisure viewers, people who don't really give a shit about the game, but watch anyway. Bandwagon fans, basically. Pittsburgh's got this demographic locked down, though.

  • thats fucking so gay. the united states will be the death of hockey

  • Not completely, just failure teams like Phoenix. But when they degrade the game with shit like this its just sad.

  • haha...Phoenix...which was gretzky's organization...compared to Pittsburgh...Lemeuix wins, everytime...Lemeix wins

  • The US is the life of hockey. Would you rather have a six team league? Did it once before

  • @trayborder lol you're a fucking moron. NBC shows like 20 games a year, and this is only in replays, not during the actual game, fucktard.

  • @trayborder Considering the last time a Canadian team won the cup was in 1993, I'd say it's doing pretty well.

  • @trayborder Which is why we took Canada to OT and won the silver, right? Dream on.

  • @trayborder you're right. exciting players like parise, miller, thomas, gionta, and kane are terrible promoters of the game.

  • @trayborder Fucking lol, I can just see you at your computer "OMG THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! THEY HAVE THE PUCK HIGHLIGHTED!? GOD THIS IS THE END OF HOCKEY AHHHH"

Calm the fuck down. I'm American and I don't need this to understand where the puck is. Am I the death of hockey too?

  • this is stupid..it destroys the game.

  • Are you for real?

  • yeh....it looks like some failure video game or cartoon.....

  • NASCAR?

  • Even if you can't see the puck, it's obvious where it is if you watch what the players are doing.

  • Disclaimer: I have no problem seeing the puck

That said, the Fox thing was fine. Not overly obnoxious. Not a problem. This on the other hand is just irritating. It doesn't highlight the puck, it makes it impossible to see the puck beneath the giant oversized graphic.

  • Lol!

  • This is all fucking retarded, if you really have such problems seeing a BLACK PUCK ON WHITE ICE you need to buy some glasses or get a tv less than 10 years old. seriously. this problem stems from sports fans being too poor to afford these things rather than the puck actually being difficult to see.

  • Dear God! Did we learn nothing from FOXTRAX?

  • Where can I get a puck like that?

  • AHAHHHAHAHAAHAHA

  • Canadians keep wondering why Americans dont watch Hockey, because they CANT SEE THE PUCK! The average American sports fan doesnt like hockey because it doesnt photograph well. So along comes NBC (and Fox before them) and tries help attract new viewers, and what do the Canadian fans start doing, bitching and moaning. FOR FUCK SAKE, NBCS TRACKER IS USED ON THE REPLAY! NOT DURING LIVE PLAY. Let the American broadcasters do what they need to do to make the game a little more popular.

  • i know one of the channels did something like this during regular play. it was horrible. I can see the puck perfectly on my tv, dont know what the fuck youre talking about.

Make the game a little more popular? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

  • Heres where your wrong

    1) The only puck tracking technology that has been used was FOX's FOX TRACK back in the 90s and it was used during live play in fact if a player shot the puck really hard it let out a red glow.

    2) So we should allow American broadcaster to turn our sport into some fantasy game with glowing flying things? Oh and the fact that the wires inserted into the puck compromised its performance

Why would you need the puck highlighted on a replay. its going slower duh

  • Re: 1) You make no point here, did you read my post?

Re: 2) So, hockey only belongs to Canada? Good to know. So next time I here Canadians complaining that television rates are so low in the US, I think of you. People who like to thwart innovation, and inventing new ways to introduce different sports to new fans.

Also, about the puck bouncing to much, I'm sure with time the league and the networks would have work out the technical problem.

  • what? i don't know anything about hockey belonging to Canada, i know theres over 20 nations playing it at an Elite Level....

And the glowing puck is not a good idea, its not nice at all....

  • That's my point; Hockey is for EVERYONE! And a glowing puck in REPLAY is going to hurt anyone.....

  • It degrades the game and compromises it, the puck itself reacted differently when passed or shot part.

  • In the case of NBCs tracker, its a post-production process. The puck is a standard NHL puck, unlike the fox puck from the early 90s. Therefore, it compromises nothing.

  • Did you ever think television ratings are low in the US simply because no one cares about hockey there? This "innovation" is both a joke and an insult to hockey. Why should Canadians accept their favourite sport being degraded like this because americans dont like our sport?

  • Have you seen NFL replays were they put a glow on the football? Are the football fans saying that's going to ruin the game? How about NASCAR fans? Do you here them complaining that networks are degrading the sport? Degraded? Really?

  • Exactly. We have CBC, they have NBC. It's not like Foxtrax where it was during live games. If it helps bring in new fans, I say let them use it.

  • @HockeyEvangelist hey im canadian and i like the idea of the foxtrax. i just dont like how it glows blue kind of weird. but if they bolded the puck or just made it look bigger like hear thats pretty ausome

  • @HockeyEvangelist I don't think Canadians mind replays with the highlighted puck I actually liked the glowing puck but I understand why people didn't but on replays I like having it and I'm Canadian.

  • @HockeyEvangelist I have no idea Americans' eyesight was significantly worse than the rest of the world.

  • @HockeyEvangelist horrible, that's not the reason why at all! Hockey is regional in America. Also to help you with your "Thesis" One of the season swhy a sport like Soccer might be more popular is because of start-up cost. Hockey require a lot more start up cost than Soccer (A ball). Also Football and Baseball are America's past time and its hard to compete with a sport that is considered part of history and past time of a region.

  • @HockeyEvangelist possibly the dumbest thing i have read in at least, 30 minutes.

  • @HockeyEvangelist go watch some handegg or get some glasses. usa networks ruin hockey with these gimmicks.

  • @HockeyEvangelist First of all... There are plenty of Americans in Michigan, New York, and Massachusetts who never needed " Puck tracking technology" to be fans of the game. Hockey is not popular in Phoenix because hockey is played on ice, and Phoenix is a desert. Same deal with Florida (not the desert part). Secondly, Canadian fans don't give a fuck about what Americans like or don't like- puck tracking technology on tv is annoying as fuck.

  • @HockeyEvangelist Why would they need to use a tracker if its a slow motion replay? Other than not using it at all, wouldn't it make the most sense to use it when its going fast?

  • @HockeyEvangelist hear hear!

  • @HockeyEvangelist If you cant see the puck, buy a TV bigger then 10". Ive heard that argument alot and it fuckin makes no sense at all.

  • @HockeyEvangelist your a horrible human being

  • @HockeyEvangelist pathetic. americans must have really bad eyes down there.... go watch slow football, and even slower baseball. Hockey is a fast sport and its is meant to be, i have never had a hard time to see the puck in 30 years but again americans must have really bad eye sight...

  • @robdmhaze

So many things wrong in that comment.... First: How is Baseball slower than Football? I think a ball going 85-100 MPH is a looottttt faster than a football being thrown for 20-40 yards. Second: Football is much better than hockey.

  • @appstatefanRS football is lame, i think one of the dumbest sports out there, its as bad as watching paint dry. and i guess my mistake in saying baseball is slow is that the game is slower then shit not the ball being tossed.. when you can have your best player of 100 years be babe ruth who is the fattest mother fucker there is and cant run around the bases, bwahaha lame wow he could hit the ball, just couldn't do anything else lol

  • @robdmhaze

You never gave an example of how football is lame. Also, I do agree with you on the fact that Baseball is slow.

  • @appstatefanRS football is just plain lame, its boring to watch. it stops and starts so much there is no flow. And the players think of themselves as the fucking king shits of the world with all their unsportsmanlike end zone cheering dances and pathetic hit and pose for the camera bullshit, its lame. Rugby players are 1000% more men then football players. that and what 22% of the league has criminal records for beating their spouses, drugs, and other infractions...lol to funny...

  • @HockeyEvangelist i'm sorry, but you have to be stupid if you can't follow the puck, it's not hard... hockey is being ruined by america, it really stinks.

  • @HockeyEvangelist we dont watch hockey because its such a boring sport. they run around banging a piece of shit back and forth for a few hours tryin to get it in the net and every once in a while it goes in. every goal looks exactly the same. how many times can you watch the same shit ???

"i was at the store. what'd i miss"

"aw nothin. the other team got it in the net once"

    "cool. i wanna see"

  • @TheEgg185 and watching a guy run into an end zone is the same every time, and someone running over home plate is the same thing every time, and scoring a goal in futbol is the same every time... i fail to see what youre trying to get at...

  • @TheEgg185 In an interview some one was asking Jeremy Roenick about how some people find hockey booring his response " Have they ever watched baseball " Every sport has the same shit happening all over in hockey it happens the least asshole

  • @TheEgg185 To each his own, but honestly I don't understand people like you who say hockey is boring when it is the fastest sport in the world, and also one of the toughest sports in the world. I was hooked right after watching my first hockey game.

Not to mention there are very few stoppages in between whistles. The NBA has a foul basically every other play to the basket. Football they run one play and stand around 10 minutes. Baseball is real sloooow. How is hockey boring?

  • @bbasher79 totally agree

  • @HockeyEvangelist "Canadians keep wondering why Americans dont watch Hockey" hahaha, Yeah that's what keeps Canadians up late at night- wondering why there isn't a team in Albuquerque! Selling hockey to Americans is tantamount to selling them a healthy diet- give them anything healthy and they'll find a way to deep fry it and smother it with trans fats. I think most Canadians would just rather not see the fine game of hockey be reduced to a McRibwich.

  • How hard can it be to see a black puck on white ice?

I think FOX and NBC are insulting the average American.

  • hmmm shouldnt you guys just be happy that you get a fucking broadcast? i mean geez here in america weve got to BUY fucking new tv's and converter boxes and were not even talking cable tv. im talkin roof antennas and bunny ears. ok ill end it like this. if my countrymen wanna fight you canadians i say we both broadcast that meanwhile i think id rather be in mexico getting the swine flu than dealing with 2 assholic countries who hate eachother on the ice but shake hands in the offices

  • i have to go with canadian fans on this one even though im an american. the light thing on the puck is pretty gay. i can understand when around the goal it gets hard to see oh i dont know my fellow americans BECAUSE THERES A FUCKING GOALIE THERE BLOCKING YOUR VIEW? PERHAPS SOME TEAMMATES PLAYING SOME D OFCOURSE YOU CANT SEE IT. im sorry canada for my fellow countrymens idiocy but comon in open ice? clearly visible. now canada i must say yall get mad over broadcasting rights i hear.....

  • why is this not a good idea? when your watching a hockey game on tv the puck can be difficult to track when its moving fast.......Its not effecting the broadcast that much it just makes the puck easier to see...why is this such a bad idea?

  • its stupid!!! its for idiot american's that can't find the puck! geez! what is this EA sports!

  • i lold at ea sports

  • Yes, if it helps TV ratings.

  • I like it to be honest.....but if they have it on Versus on the nhl site

i strongly think thre shoudl be the option to turn it off since i see that lots of fans dislike the feature

  • No way theyll use this on a real game thats ridiculous. and whats the point on using this on replay if its already on slow mow ?

  • bad idea, but if you look at old NHL on Fox hockey games, them Robots were funny

  • they should use this for the whole game, it's a great idea

  • great idea my ASS... most brutal thing i have ever saw

  • if you need a halo around the puck too follow it, dont watch the game

  • seriously. can they make the league look liek more of a joke? its like watching a cartoon, dumbest thin to ever put into sports

  • This would be good for replays, like when a defenceen wires it to the net. But using it for the whole game would just be stupid.

  • my god...this is just brutal to watch.

  • FUCKING GAY ! ! ! !

If you cant see the puck, you are a retard.

  • They think people need help seeing a black puck on white ice? Good Lord these guys need to take a long hard look at their lives and find out when it all went wrong.

  • As long as it's used on replays it's fine.

  • OMG! this is bad... ;(

if you watch hockey in internet with low connect, you can see the same effect

  • Sorry, I'm one of the only ones who like the "glowing puck".

  • bad

  • interesting

  • its ok if they just use it for replays. No way for the actual game though

  • i agree..the FoxTrax puck a few years ago was a little too much...i like it used on the replays it makes it look more sophisticated like that.

  • NOOOO! Dont do it!!!
