I hate it that Americans in the states are bashing mexico but the same Americans move to Mexico suddenly love the culture and the people. Real hypocrites.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico's Heart, the epicenter of the Mexican Revolution, comes alive in Caren's film as she brings together the town with its splendorous Colonial beauty, the Mexican people, and the expats finding "home" in SMA. San Miguel brings me joy and peace never experienced before. I watch Caren's film repeatedly to recapture that magic. Like me, you will see and "feel" the joyful interactions as Caren walks the ancient cobblestones engulfed in the beauty of people and place.
Mexico gives those who have euros or dollars the opportunity of having a better relax life and to have your euro/dollars stretch much more than here in the States. Instead of commenting that Mexico is a third world country, they should thank God for Mexico, because other countries such a Europe wouldnt welcome you with open arms like Mexico does. So like we say dont bite the hand the feeds you
Sweet excerpt of a tasty & technically beautiful film! The sounds and colors are as gorgeous as those of...well...San Miguel! The characters interviewed are drawn out beautifully; they become people the viewer wants to know .... A light, yet very thoughtful psychological inquiry.
i've been in SM twice in the last 2 years is really pretty as other colonial spots in central Mexico, seeing all the foreigners moving to this city is great! more diversity does not harm anyone, but sadly the people coming to SM are not integrating ..i don't mean becoming a full mexican cause there not, but walking in the little park in front of the parroquia or walking the streets you notice that there is not very much integration between the locals and foreigners. SAD
Thank you! By the way, Mexico has been battered economically because of the PR around the swine flu, the drug stories and the U.S. economy. Tourism is way down. I hope people in the US realize that the swine flu was blown way out of proportion. There were no such cases anywhere in the state of Guanajuato, let alone in San Miguel. And the drug wars are located at the border, eight hours from San Miguel and not near the beautiful Mexican beaches. Caren
Anyone moving to a foreign country, especially Mexico, should see this film! It really explains why thousands of expats have made Mexico their home...it's fabulous!
I am American born but my parents immigrated from Mexico in the late 60's and since then had me and my sisters here in NY. I love my city of NY, I dont think there is any city like it in the world and I appreciate all the great things I have but it lacks heart and a feeling of "home".
When I visit Mexico whether it's Cancun - Puebla - Queretaro - Acapulco or any small town I smile and glee with excitement. It may be because I am surrounded by people who look like me but its more than that.
When I was interviewing people for this film I was amazed at how many of them said the same thing, ie: that they felt as if they had come "home." After years of trying to understand this, I finally have an idea about why this is so. I believe that people who say this are referring to the fact that here in Mexico they feel comfortable in their own skin. They feel as if they can be themselves. They don't feel judged or competitive. They can just be.
Many of us Mexicans are also aware of the beauty that we leave behind when we reluctantly leave the country, come to the USA ( a land of perpetual anti-mexican sentiment), make it and go back to Mexico for good, not missing a bit of what is left behind in the USA.
What a beatiful video!.
PS
From a Mexican who came to the USA (23 years ago) made it and is dying to go back next year.
I think that for the most part people in the US are too stressed and busy and dont have enough time to enjoy life, and in Mexico even though people have financial problems they are still very relaxed and have way more time to enjoy and just live life. i have a friend who is a US citizen and lives in mexico and every time she comes she talks about how every one here in the US are so stressed out about everything.
I'm a guitarist/business owner seriously considering moving to Mexico, but I haven't a clue yet as to where. I want peaceful surroundings BUT I also need artsy creatives and a social dance scene. Any ideas as to possible locations that would satisfy my criteria?
i am mexican i live in the usa for almost tho years sometimes the american people is coold and yes the life in mexico is hard but a lot of poor people here learn how to be happy.
I can not begin to explain either, something is missing here in the Good old USA, but appears abundant in Mexico. I think one could call it pure and simple heart!
The heart and soul of the Americas has gone missing yet it is everywhere you look in Mexico. I hope to soon be an expatriate as well. thanks for the reassurance, it's not just me.
Thanks, I have 5 grandchildren in SMA, and it is such a beautiful place, but alas, things are chaning there as well as other places, for the worst...but it still beats the USA in the manner that people think and live and see life. I miss SMA.

There is an artsy crowd here and a small dancing crowd. SMA might satisfy your criteria. I'd also check out Oaxaca.
