Ok here's the thing. Columbus day celebrates Columbus and the triumph over the Amerindians and a victory for the Europeans. This was a day celebrated by a white America. But starting in 1965, the immigration laws were changed, allowing non-white immigration. Now fast forward to today, the U.S. is almost 40% non-white, down from 90% white in 1965 and now the hero is not the hero anymore because the "defeated" are now almost half the country. So now the hero, is now the villain.
Columbus Day would become a federal day off, a day for pray & crying, and discuss a fair way to refund to the true owners of this land. For example, on the next Oct.12, release Leonard Peltier.
THE WHITE MAN HAS WRITTEN HIS HISTORY WITH THE BLOOD OF THE NATIVE BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE OF THE PLANET -THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO HONOR THESE PEOPLE THAT IS HOW THEY CAME TO WORLD POWER
"With all due respect". Are you kidding me! Columbus had no respect so you shouldn't either. This holiday should be removed for good and replaced with something more appropriate.
I can't believe the idiots out there who continue to ignore historical facts because of their stupid pride. Shall we also honor those who've committed acts of genocide within the last century?
@NoirHammer Let me explain something to you. Do I personally care about what happened to the indigenous people? No. I could care less. It happened. so shut up and move on. People like you need to stop pushing their views onto the people of 1492. The point of learning history is to learn where all of us came from. Not to be ashamed or complain. Stop whining and get over it.
@ralvarez15 "People like you need to stop pushing their views onto the people of 1492." Gee . . . now that made a lot of sense. I wonder if those dead people of 1492 will also rise up from the grave and actually tell me to stop pushing my views on them?
Your point seems to be lost in a pile of stupidity because you're making no sense. LOL. What an idiot. When you contribute something that has some kind of meaning, post back here.
@NoirHammer As I have said, learn to get over it. what happened in the past happened. Who cares? I don't. Now please stop being stupid and actually learn to get over it. If you cannot understand why I said people in 2011 should not judge people back in 1492 then you are a bigger idiot then I thought.LOL Get over it. I personally do not care that it happened. Its in the past.As you said they are dead people.:) And so you should not care.:)
@ralvarez15 LOL. I like how you push aside "your" stupidity by not acknowledging that you said, "People like you need to stop pushing their views onto the people of 1492". When you own up to that, then we can move on because I still can't figure out how a living human today can push their views on dead corpses, unless these corpses can somehow think, reason, and speak? If this is so, you should enlighten the YouTube community.
@NoirHammer "My" stupidity? LOL. Honey if you think I have stupidity then you are more of an idiot then I thought. Okay. I own up to it. Oops. What I meant to say since you are too much of a moron to understand is that you are trying to understand 1492 in the mindset of someone from 2011. Yeah, doesn't work. Now as I said idiots like you need to get over the past. Holding a grudge and still complaining over it is very idiotic. Saying that I have stupidity ony proves you know I am right.
@ralvarez15 Yes, I agree I have to "lower" my IQ a few points just to understand your ESL English. Gee, I didn't know there was an expiration on "compassion" and basic human rights. Tell me, at what point in time should a person consider a murder not worth caring about? How about death? Should one wait exactly one second or two before they stop caring because it happened in the past?
I don't see you telling Columbus lovers to get over his accomplishments. Why aren't you doing that? Moron.
@NoirHammer LOL!! See. You are ignorant. You name call me because you know I am right. Some people like you just can't admit how much more intelligent I am. What happened, happened hundreds of years ago and people like you are just complaining over what happened in the past. Its dumb. Its called learning the past and moving on.I guess idiots like you can't comprehend that. It happened. move on. And by the way bashing columbus does nothing. like you said they are dead people.:)
@ralvarez15 You are so intelligent that you have this problem of answering question posed at you. You just go on and on about how people should move on already. I'm still waiting for you to "carefully" read what I've posted and answer each question.
Okay imbecile, I didn't bash Columbus. Learn to read. I attacked his present-day followers for celebrating his day. He's dead so the should get over it. They live in the past, too. When are you going to attack them?
@NoirHammer Imbecile? See you are becoming frantic. You know I am right. And yes I am very intelligent.Oh, and since you decide to become very hostile and name call like a child I do NOT have to answer your questions. Until you learn to talk like an adult(it means not name calling like an idiot) then I will gladly answer your questions. Until then, just accept I am in the right because based on your anger you know I am right.
Why all you people so butthurt about Columbus Day? It's not even celebrated in schools anymore. Every one knows that columbus enslaved and killed people. you're not enlightening anyone. the reason it's still a holiday is because no one gives a shit! it's not "Colombus Enslaved and Killed Everyone Day". it's "The Guy Who Started The Migration of Europeans to the West Day". HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY EVERYONE!
Can't Native Americans celebrate whatever holidays they want to on Native Land. MLK JR was a womanizer why are women not standing up to knock his Holiday Down. This Holiday is celebrating the connection of the two hemispheres. Not going to cancel Christmas because Jesus's birth eventually gave way to the Crusades and the Iniquisition. Maybe you should talk to somebody from that period to see how it really went down, oh wait you can't because it was 400 years ago. I don't think you people get it
@dapeck04 Germany should celebrate the Third Reich and have mein kampf be their bestseller. They should celebrate National Hitler day. Hitler Did great things for his country and made it prosperous. <That sounds like something you would say...Agree?< Native Land huh? Do you even know the average size of land put aside for Native Americans? What kind of natural resources are available?Almost none but, whatever left is the governments or already being drained because of greedy Corporations.
@dapeck04 Jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25th. That was originally a holiday celebrated by pagans, most notably the Romans, called "Invictus". The Christian Church has a long history of co-opting other people's stuff or switching facts and details to suit their own notions of history. Even Jesus life story had been repeated amongst many cultures before the actual birth of Christ. MLK, womanizer though he may have been, didn't help slaughter millions of peaceful people.
Are you also willing to reconsider your stance on abortion. They say in this video "but remaining neutral and pretending like it didn't happen or that it doesn't still impact us today. So please take the day to learn the whole story". So I urge everyone reading is this too stop being neutral on the issue of abortion, stop pretending it's not murder and that it's not happening in a clinic in your neighborhood! Please take 33 min to reconsider your stance on abortion by going to 180movie dot com
@miyanagirl I'm asking these people to practice what they preach & reconsider their stance on abortion. They say in this video "but remaining neutral and pretending like it didn't happen or that it doesn't still impact us today". Some of these same people who don't want people to "remaining neutral" about Columbus day remain neutral about the issue of abortion. How would it sound if I used the pro-choice arguments for defending Columbus. CONTINUED ON NEXT POST.
@miyanagirl CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS POST. Excuses like, maybe "they're not actual human beings", or "they were deformed", or they "wouldn't have a good quality of life", or "they couldn't afford to have them around" and my personal favorite, don't judge someone until you've been in that situation. NONE OF THESE EXCUSES ARE VALID FOR SLAUGHTERING COUNTLESS HUMAN LIVES! So people, if u r willing 2 "reconsider Columbus day" please also reconsider your stance on abortion by going 2 180movie dot com.
Columbus Day is the acknowledgement of a massively significant historical event. It is a crucial point in the history of how this country came to be founded, and it would ridiculous to ignore it. The focus of the celebration is on his arrival in and discovery of (from the European perspective) the New World. It is a celebration of his voyage and the accomplishment it entails. Everything else about the man or events that followed are irrelevant to the focus of the holiday.
@ComradeFlorian31 Yeah. Every single thing that happened after Columbus discovered North America is his fault. That's equivalent to blaming Jesus for the Crusades. (Note: I am not trying to say Columbus is like Jesus in any other regard. Even as an atheist, I imagine him as being bit nicer than an entrepreneurial renaissance Italian) Causality is not culpability. Or do you think Europe would have been nicer to the natives if someone else had made the voyage?
@LordQwert Except that he didn't discover anything. There were people there already. That's like giving a person who pitches a tent on your lawn a day because he discovered your lawn. This is fundamentally the problem with European perspective. That its perspective alone should be honored and respected disregarding basic facts that every school child has learned. Columbus was an opportunist trying to turn a fortune, not a great adventurer trying to further the human race.
@nerdmom920 So... let me see if I understand, via analogy: If we were to travel to and discover sentient life on another planet, that wouldn't be a discovery, because they were already there. Not worth commemorating with a holiday. Sorry, no. I fail to see how the event is any less historic or meaningful just because he wasn't first, and clearly everyone agrees on that or else we wouldn't have anything to argue about. What happened next was awful, but does not negate the importance.
@LordQwert Actually, as illustrated by this PSA, everyone doesn't agree. And yes, it wouldn't be a discovery because it was already known. How about just something that we learned? To casually discard the genocide of an ENTIRE civilization based on the erroneous assumption that Columbus discovered them is denial at its finest. Nothing justifies that. Columbus had a hand in the slaughter of more Taino people than Hitler killed Jews. We don't give Hitler a day, do we?
@nerdmom920 What I meant, and thought was clear, was that everyone agrees that it was meaningful and historic. If it wasn't we wouldn't be having this conversation. No one would hate him. People don't get upset about meaningless, unremembered events. So yes, everyone agrees that Columbus discovering America was meaningful and historic. Denying that is ridiculous, so feel free to say I meant something else and deny that instead.
@LordQwert What is meaningful is that there was an entire civilization that existed before Columbus got there, that is willfully ignored. What Columbus did is about as meaningful as genocide, which I find abhorrent to celebrate. I don't need to put words in your mouth, you're taking care of that for me.
Who celebrates Columbus day anyway? I don't even ever remember when it is. But i would be supportive of a day (or month?) of reflection and awareness of the crimes of our nation's past, lest we be doomed to repeat them. I think we would be better off if we set down once and for all a proclamation of all citizens of the world as Native and we can bless and admire those who act in the spirit of the world while giving no power to those who act in opposition to the spirit of the common good.
