  • You pronounced the "d" wrong in most words and you also pronounced the "u" wrong. You also have a very obvious accent. But it's well done for someone who doesn't normally speak danish.

  • the reason norwegian and danish is so alike is cause denmark ''ruled'' norway(or it was co-operating into one big country) at the time before 1907 :D

  • This sounds SOOOO weird! We Danes do not speak like that. AT ALL! ;)

I think is funny how English people sounds like when they try to speak danish! Most of us Danes (mostly the young ones) have NO problems writing and speaking English. Some times people think I'm actually from England when I speak English, and I'm only 13!

  • @LifeOfMal LOL, nå - jeg er Britisk, men PRØVE at lære Dansk. (men jeg bor ikke i Danmark) Du har det ret at han lyder ikk' så korekt, MEN - husk, han bare kigge på mange sprogerne. Dog, "As if part of my mouth is almost slightly numb or paralyzed" er ikke en dejlig ting at sige om Dansk...

  • when he is reading, it sounds like he is in pain :S

  • You can't speak it like that, you need to be drunk and talk with your mouth full.

  • If you learned any Danish from this, and wanna know more about denmark, press danmarkshistoriendk below this comment and check out all the little films on Danish history.

  • You sound reeeaaaally funny, but you did a good job with the æøå!! :)

  • Im danish and it is a hard languages for sure. The way you are pruanousing the words is allmost correct , but sounds a bit funny :)

    Good job :)

  • Lol, kinda sounds like someone from Bornholm XD

  • Morsomt! Jeg har fundet en fejl i den danske tekst. Hvis I tager et lille kig på 2:41 og ligger mærke til, hvor hans egentlige digitus secundus befinder sig, så vil I opnå et yderst besynderligt syn. Han har ydermere skrevet, eller udskrevet, ordet "spørger" forkert. ;] Tilsyneladende undrende...

  • @NicklasVB Det lagde jeg os mærke til:P

  • The whole time I was watching this video, I wanted to grab you by the shoulders, hold you still and tell you to BREATHE for a minute or two. It sounds like you're drowning or like you've just finished running a marathon. But anyway, very interesting video!

  • @forkv That's cous it's hard for english people to pronouns the sounds. He does a good job, though. It was undestandeble, but if you try and listen to a real danish talk, it sounds much less like his/her throat hurts;) It's kindda funny, cous we dansih does this thing with the englsih, like a though twister: say; Rød grød med fløde:P Try it. I bet you can't!

  • Amazingly good job...!

  • impressive, that you are able to read danish and get the articulation, granted it's not flawless but i'd understand you if we where having a conversation

  • Very great and well done!

I specially liked the "jo" translation.. and "hyggelige" is rather difficult to translate to any language :)

    Greetings from Denmark

  • Very great and well done!

I specially liked the "jo" translation.. and "hyggelige" is rather difficult to translate to any laguage :)

    Greetings from Denmark

  • Nice on the spot translation of the word 'jo' ("jeg har jo den bog"). If allowed a more liberal translation I would maybe go with "I do have that book (after all)."

  • Hmm... Glad for at være Dansker xD

  • svenska tar danska vilken dag som helst. sug pung pölsejävlar! :)

  • @kimpakatt Svensk lyder som den rene volapük til mig. Skånk er nemmere at forstå end Svensk.

  • u are saying "bok" and that confused me at first.. untill i realized u where saying "bog"

    it's pronounced: B-O (english O) bog.. hope u understood :)

    Greetings from Denmark :)

  • Thumps op hvis oplæseren lyder som en blanding af en svensker og en 2.G indvandrer ;)

  • Spelling error..

    It's not "Spører", it's "Spørger" ;)

  • It sounds hella funny but it's actually quite good!

  • And btw, you did a great job trying to speak danish, but it sounded either as a swed trying to speak danish! xD

  • Vi sad I hans store huggelige stue :-D

  • pretty interesting even for a dane... you definately have some incredible language skills! the only serious mistake you make is that you keep switching around the sound of "u" and the sound "y". Otherwise it's very good :D

btw the word "jo" is really missing in the otherwise so elaborate English language ;)

  • oh yaaaaayyy!! elsker I ikke også bare at tale dansk foran nogle udlændinge, og de står bare og kigger og smiler dumt xD det så nice.

(men så bliver det ikke så sjovt når de bralrer løs på et andet sprog end engelsk, tysk, eller norsk...jeg kan ikke forstå svensk, kun på skrift)

  • i find it amazing how ppl can learn 2 languages and not be confused

  • Does people in Dennmark still use their native language? And does Danish resemble Norwegian?

  • @Olhor10 Yes and yes

  • @Olhor10 What else would we use? But it does resemble norwegian though bokmål more than nynorsk (new norwegian)

  • @Olhor10

Yes we do still use out native language. However, alot of words from english are being used in some instances. But ofcourse we still mianly use the danish words.

And yes, it does resemble norwegian. And it is possible for me to understand norwegian, it just takes a little time.

  • @Olhor10

Yes Danes speak danish. As for Norwegian & Danish they do resemble each other... Norwegian is more sing-song where as Danish is more growl when being spoken.

  • fail der står spører jeg xD

  • Now you know which country to go to if your mouth is ever slightly paralysed..

  • "Hyggelige" means Cosy rather then comfortable

  • @halladall I think the general opinion is that "hyggelige" cannot be directly translated as one word into English. The meaning is much more encompassing than simply the sparse "cosy" or "comfortable". As an Anglo-Dane, I know what the Danes mean by it. And no, English people don't have a word for that particular.... whatever-it-is!

  • Comparing Norwegian and Danish doesn't quite work. In writing, the languages are similar, but in spoken form Danish relates much more to the fonetic distinctions of German. Danish is softer, and a lot less intuitive than Norwegian and Swedish. Not a bad attempt, though.

  • bog isn't said bok, you bend the 'O' a little bit, so its pronounced more like båo. :)

  • Sounds a bit troublesome with your breathing.

    I hope you didn't hurt yourself. :)

But you actually do it quite well!

The problem with Danish is that it's almost counter intuitive because of the guttural sounds.

It is quite a hard language to learn because of this.

But again, well done, sir! :)

  • I'm Danish, and I think it sounds a bit like a German trying to speak Danish when you do it. Some of the stuff also makes me think of Danes speaking in an affected (snobbish) manner.

Though it does sound like you're a little out of breath when speaking - the pronunciation lacks a bit of "punch" on some sounds.

But it was actually quite good - and fully intelligible.

All in all a fun and educational video - I'll peruse your other uploaded videos with great interest :)

  • I always find it interesting to hear what foreigners think about our language. A lot of people always say it is really hard to learn and others don't find it so difficult, all depending on what their own language sound like. Think you did a very god job on imitating the sounds...and it was really interesting to see the comparesant between Danish and Norwegian, since we don't look at each others languages that way here in Scandinavia...except for reading a some texts in school a few times ;)

  • Sounds funny, but you do it much better than many others who try to immediate Danish.

  • Lidder(Luther) sidder i den huggerlige stue.

  • nice accent

  • Careful that you don't hurt yourself with that voice XD

  • hvor luder siger disse ord!

  • Hyggeligt :D Grineren nok. Sjovt nok han kan godt sige Luther ordenligt, men på dansk kan han slet ikke xD! Men lidt norsk accent eller sådan er der inden over ^^ :p

  • you kinda sound like Karen Blixen,

  • Jeg har jo den bog = I do have this book

Jeg har den bog = I have this book

    cheers :)

  • Haha, im swedish, i think you do danish real well :D This is how it sounds for me, although its easier to follow you than a real dane.

  • you are speeking great Danish.

just as good as our Prince Henrik :) the Queens husband.

  • HAHAHA, han lyder norsk eller noget, når han prøver på at læse dansk. xD

  • 2:41 Der står 'spører jeg' Fail, lol.

  • "Hyggelige" is with hard g..

  • Wow. Im danish, and this actually helped me! I did not know that it is common that in danish we insert a D insted of two letters "nn" like in your exampel "DK - Findes" "NOR - Finnes"

    Thank u

  • Could you recommend a learning method for a native English speaker wanting to learn Danish?

  • I am a Swedish girl who wants to "learn" Danish (not so hard since the languages are so alike), the problem is the pronunciation, it's so extremely hard to pronounce some words, especially if they are alike Swedish words xD

  • @MysMultilanguagesFav How funny.. Im a danish girl who wants to learn swedish! I live in sweden right now to learn it :-) I had the same problems the pronunciation and the words that look the same !

  • Dansk er et af de sværeste sprog i verden :o

  • peter4real ! not Real ...

    Jeg kunne tale tysk i 1 klasse ... Sønderjyde - !

Men Tysk er ekstremt let for mig samt Engelsk ...

    Fransk oui...

Bor i Copenhagen -but not many can Speak Deutch here ...!

  • @a1864aa ... HAHAHA "bor i Copenhagen" og du var god til engelsk!?

  • Man thats awesome! You sound so funny but i never heard anyone speak Danish. Glad for jeg er en dansker! Det skal man være stolt af!

  • No need to be so nervous dude just chillax!

    Good vid, very informative.

  • You sounds so nervous and hurried.

  • One thing that strikes me the most, i actually knew that already, but the similarities between Danish and English are abnorm... The Danish and English gramar is roughly the same, the fact that you can just translate the individual words and it makes sense, and even is almost grammatically correct is entriguing... :P Must be from the occupation around year 1000...

  • hehe det er jo sindsygt !! Man tænker jo slet ikke over det når man taler det .. og det det sprog vi bruger når vi snakker er jo helt anderledes end når vi skriver, alle de forkortelser og ensbetydninger og dobbelt betydninger :) fooock haha !!

  • Forskel på D'et i Disse og D'et i IstiDen. det ene er blødt og det andet er stemt.

  • Han lyder meget nervøs, eller stønende...

  • lol "af" isnt pronounced "ar"

  • your danish is, pretty spot on, there is the luther thing but thats already mentioned, so my only advice is take a breahter, cus it sounds like your haveing problems breating, so just slow it down a bit, else it was fine

  • ehmm nest time take a breather, cus it sounds you like you have problems breathing

  • nice job dude

  • Well, nice job!

"Luther" is pronounced "Looder" if it´s a name of a dane.If it´s a foreign name like "Luther Vandross" we pronounce it like you would.Same thing with the name "michael" if it´s a dane it´s pronounced "Mii-kal"..Many words in danish are pronounced the same but have a totally another meaning and some of them are even spelled the same..Like, sværd (sword) svær (cooked pig skin) svær(tough) as in," tough nut to crack"..

  • its inde and not inne :b

  • Hold kæft, det lyder som en blanding mellem Chris McDonald og Ole Henriksen! ahahahahah, hvor awesome :-D.

  • @ChocolateBunnyxD hvad snakker du om, han snakker da flot engelsk.

  • det er sjovt at høre andre snakke om dansk... når det er så naturligt for en selv:)

Its fun to hear you talk about danish when its so natural for me:)

  • Hahaha well as it's been said, our throats won't hurt or contract by speaking Danish - if you're already a Dane ;) I guess we're genetically modified in that respect ;)

Anyway, this was very interesting and you did a great job of reading the Danish, the only thing that caught my ear was very minor things, mostly the y in hyggelige, and admittedly that is a sound almost unpronounceable for a native English speaker (which is why "lygtepæl" - lamp post is a word we like foreigners to say)

  • Hmm, Same here when I recognise allot of Frisian in Danish,

    Kalder : Kâlder (colder)

    Istiden : Iistiiden (icetimes/Ice age)

    allerbedste : Alderbêste (the best)

    Vaek : Faak (often)

    Good job Alexander

  • @BinneReitsma Kalder is -> Calls

    and Vaek/Væk is -> Gone.

    Otherwise good job. :-D

  • @BinneReitsma "Kalder" doesnt mean colder. Colder is "koldere" in Danish. :-) "Kalder" means calling or shouting.

  • Haha, thats good danish speaking for an english person, and yea it sounds like it hurts when u speak, but i'm danish and it doesent hurt our throats when we speak(; It's not life threatning! By the way we say luther the same way u do(;

  • @emil5634

In Danish, Luther is pronounced ['looder] while in English it has the th sound like in the.

So I disagree, it's NOT pronounced the same in Danish and English.

But yes, you did a great job reading this :)

  • Han får dansk til at lyde som et underligt sprog

He make danish sound as a weird language :P

  • I don't know why I watched this vid, listening to danish makes me shiver =P

  • that was good - and I mean really good.

  • Haha, og så er der stavefejl i den tekst, han sidder med! xD "spører" xD

  • It's all about raiding england to take their silver forks.

  • det lyder som om at han har været ude og løbe :P

  • HAHAHAHA, GLAD FOR JEG ER DANSK XDDDD VI HAR ET SYGT SPROG!

  • @TheFedeDk Snyggt? det ser för jävligt ut.

  • Hyggelig=cosy (at least it is bedst, but it is not perfekt) Hyggelig is a word that only in term/idea exist in danish. You can have a "hyggelig" night with your friends at a bar playing pool, card, darts, at the same time christmass eve can be "hyggelig".

  • Try a newer danish text

  • There is a spelling fail in the danish text. It says "Før istiden? spører jeg." It is spelled spørger, not spører. (:

  • you sound just like one of my teachers, he is from England, and therefore his english is kind of funny : D You sound kind of like an English-dane, or American-dane XD but it aren't half bad :) you did a great job, and I love that you are trying to learn people danish! :D .. but I must say it is danish with A LOT of accent, but who really cares! :D

  • Haha this sounds really funny, but it's very impressive. This guy really understands the systems of language . He doesn't sound like a Dane, but it sure sounds Danish

  • HAHAHA gad godt høre ham sige RØD GRØD MED FLØDE!!!!

  • @whateverweed666 meget morsomt.

  • As a dane im quite amazed by your skills. From the way you say the words, i think its safe to say you have never lived here, and that makes it even more amazing!

I liked the way you stopped at "jo". Never thought of it before, but that word is hard to translate. Often if you refer to someone's, or your own, memory. in this case he is referring to the fact that he just remembered that he had the book. 99% of the time, you can just ignore the word completely and it dosnt change the sentence.

  • @chbdk as a dane i'm not... i think i sounds like swedish... and he should know that you can't translate a text word by word

  • der er en stavefejl i spørger :P

  • it is danish i am from denmark so it is danish

  • Author: what is your native tongue?

  • Jon Stewart: "Grammar nerds say: 'what what!'"

  • It's not Danish... it looks like Norwegian (Bokmål) but I'm not sure

  • @raindropsneverfall It is Danish, I can tell you that :) But it's not a new text, it must be at least a few decades old.

  • @raindropsneverfall You're so dum. Its danish, all right? I'm from Denmark - I KNOW that this is danish.

To the author: I would like to compliment your pronouncement- Danish is a hard language, but you're very easy to understand. But you're pronouncing the words in "posterior end" of your mouth, it makes you sound like some redneck-wannabe-danish. Otherwise very nice job. :)

  • nothing of this in danihs some of the words are but the most look like swedish and norway

  • @blackdredre It´s 100 % danish, except for one misspelled word ( " spører " instead of " spørger " )

  • I'm a dane, and when i look at that text it reminds me of swedish gramma, and spelling, but the pronnouncement* of the words are a lot like the danish way..

  • Shit me, you sound very funny =) But your doing good, If you ever need help on the danish write me ;) greetings the Dane

  • The danish text he is demnonstrating is unlike anything i've read before. The gramma is real strange, and there is also a couple of wrong wrote words. But, at the end of the day, it's a good introduction to the danish language! I'm a dane, and very good at my language, both gramma and spelling, so this is a great compliment :).

  • I have to say, it sounds almost like he's better at talking danish than the Queen's husband. (not the king, as he did not get that title when he married the Queen. :) )

Very well done, although it's easy to hear that you did Norwegian last ;)

  • The way he reads it, dosn't soundt danish at all....

  • I think you have nailed you analysis really good and opened my ears to some of the differences between Norwegian and Danish that i had not yet discovered myself.

Even though i have a Norwegian girlfriend and is Danish myself.

However you lack to prenounce the letter D correctly. Try saying it the same way as you prenounce "the".

My guess is that you come from northern part of US or Canada/Ontario.

    Br

  • det står jo heller ikke på dansk?

  • Jeg er Englaender, og boede i Danmark i 15 aar, og ALLE danskerne troede at jeg var enten Normand eller Svensker.(Men maaske fordi jeg er 190cm, med ro/dblond haar!).

  • Det lyder da mere dansk end det lyder norsk eller svensk!

  • I respect you for trying to pronounce Danish. I know I wouldn't have tried that. Especially not online :)

  • Danish is a very easy language because the letters are wrote how they are pronnounced it's not like german where you ponnounce the v's like f's and the s's like z's and danish is not like polish with hundreds of letters, it makes it much more difficult,, in danish we only pronnounce it in 2 ways, both the american way and more rare the british open-mouth way and we only have ''er'' and not ''is' or ''are'' thats another thing that makes danish such a easier language than english.

  • @RustyNaiil2 There is alot of non spoken letters in Danish

  • @RustyNaiil2 Very easy? Well, why don't you write in danish then? I have danish as a second language, and I still find some pronounciations difficult. German is easier to pronounce I think. This man is a linguist, and he doesn't claim to speak danish perfectly. It is just an overview, a little introduction. Perfecting another language take alot of time.

Danish people speak terrible english. Want to to a funny video? Ask a dane to make a similar video about English. OMG!

  • @JanJPoulsen For at holde dette i et internationalt forum skriver jeg på engelsk herfra af.

I think you are totally wrong about judging danes by saying they speak terrible english. That would be as correct as saying that all danes have red hair!

I have been working for companies that use english a lot and therefor i have got a quite nice british accent that would fool most danes though.

That a lot of danes have a coarse accent to thier obviously correct english is true though.

  • @JanJPoulsen ahhhhh... Thats not true... I being born in denmark and having it as my native language, still speak english better than alot of americans, and brits. Also my pronunciation is better than theirs. However i did live in the united states for 5 years which, i suppose is an exception. But as far as terrible goes, i wouldn't say thats true... I mean they have pronunciation problems, but its better than alot of other countries in Europe.

  • @RustyNaiil2 WTF! Danish is one of the hardest languages to learn! The vowels can be pronounced in many ways! German is easy to learn in comparison, because the everything is pronounced as is. Danish is very hard! Du er garanteret dansker og tror dit eget sprog er mega nice! LOL. :D

  • Hahaha. Danish doesn't sound like that my friend... lol. Thanks for trying though. That sounded more like an old man (from sweden) reading for his grandkids. Your right about the way you described the language though. Where are you from?

  • I think it´s very nice. For how long have you been learning danish?

  • @ElizabethxPete It is nice. He is not a native speaker. This video is just to give a small introduction, not to teach perfect pronounciation.

  • "Vi sad i hans store huggelige stue!"

  • He always sounds breatheless... like he just finished chasing down a train....

  • Argh folk giv ham en chance.. Det er svært at snakke dansk hvis man ikke er dansker (:

  • Hey I think you're great and I am danish too:)

  • The languages he is speaking in this video:

    English

    Norwegian, or swedish.

Definately not danish. And I'm a dane myself, so i can tell.. He is reading danish with Norwegian/Swedish pronouncements.

  • relax, youre talking too fast and you sound nervous

  • Stavefejl. Spører. FAIL! :S

  • @martinwpdenmark Hvis du havde lagt mærke til det er det svensk?

  • TRÅKIGT.

  • its good, but it sounds a little old, it doés'nt sound like danish, it sounded more like swedish, I think.

    But a good pronoucation.

  • Yep pretty good pronounciation, but am I the only one who thinks, his danish is a little bit oldfashioned in its pronounciation?

  • @NorseWinter no, i think that too, theres some words which not sound like the danish language.

  • I don't mean to be offensive to you or anything but if you stood in front of me and read that text to me i would probably think you were a mix between swedish and... spastic

  • sound fun but good that your not dansih and i enjoed it :D

  • "vi sad i hans store hukkelike stue" :D :D :D

  • aw, haha, so cute!

  • sure youre not from denmark>? cuz that rlly freakin good:)

  • 6:36 Kæft den er sjov :p

  • Ha, you seem like quite the singular character. I found this interesting, thank you.

  • dude, you know alot about danish and so, but if you'd try 2 read that for someone from denmark then i don't think they would understand much of it. Danish is hard 2 learn i know..i'm from denmark and sometimes even i forget how to say words in danish. You are good, but you need practice on saying the words right:)

  • "Hører" læses som "Horer" - fin lille fejl... som dog giver en helt anden betydning :P

  • @Elkj4er Haha, meget x'DD

  • @Elkj4er

  • Ej, må altså indrømme, at jeg begyndte at grine da han læste op, men hvis man tænker på, at han ikke er dansker, er det ret flot :D

  • Sounds like a danish dude attempting to speak swedish

  • you sound nervous. Dont be.

  • Det lyder godt nok anstrengende når han læser op ha ha, tror sgu også manden er svensker! Lol

  • STAVEFEJL! "Før istiden? SPØRER jeg." SPØRGER*! :D

  • Han kan da godt nok ikke udtale dansk!

  • @Howlingatmooon det gik sgu da mget godt din bong

  • Dude, your video gave me a total flashback to first, second and third grade, where we learned about the different phonetic versions of the letters in different connections and I can surely imagine how damned hard it must be to learn if you don't already speak the language and know how to pronounce the words already.. completely impossible. Btw, you sound like that when you try to speak Danish, you are almost in pain xS You generally sound pretty distressed.

  • Hyggelige is hard to translate but is closer to "Cosy" or something like that.

  • remembering that you arn't danish i think it was pretty nice reed and translatet

  • It doesnt sound that danish, but its mostly understandable, especially when you not from scandinavia.

  • 6:36 han lyder ligesom Chris McDonalds

  • 6:48 LMFAO DEt kan han sgu ikk finde ud af xD

  • This guy is pretty good :)

    Awesome job.

  • He's doing a great job...but if you talk to someone from denmark, I think you would have to repeat it a few times before they would understand it:)

    But He's pretty good:)

  • Han lyder som om han har noget stort i røven når han prøver at tale dansk.

  • Lyder jo som Chris McDonald :-D
