I was recently given a violin for christmas and want learn to play violin. Surfing the web for instruction I found this website offering online violin lessons I am not sure if I should pay the money or not for such a program. Has anyone used this training program and did you learn to play the violin?w w w (dot) getgoodreviews (dot) com/go/violin_lessons (dot) php
ah, I love the sound of violins and pianos played together. me and my cousin play together and It sounds rly cool. definitely gonna buy a cremona violin.
It gives me great pleasure to possess of your unique violin. I like it very much also never saw this kind of quality violin before my life....I'm sure that you will be the next well known luthier, intensely recommend!!!!
when people play on an instrument repeatedly, the molecules in the wood condense and the sound becomes richer. That is why old instruments are good =]
Do you have any evidence, that an old violin that is in good condition today is better now, than it was say a 100 years ago? I don't think so. If anything can be said, common sense indicates the opposite.
In truth, only violins that were exceptionally well built in the first place are still good violins today. (And of course also because of good enough storing conditions throughout the years, for example not too extreme humidity and temperature levels, so quality didn't degrade.)
Could you please post a link, or something? I'm very interested! (I'm not sarcastic or something, I mean I really am interested, these sort of things are my hobby.) Just to make my argument clear, I'm not denying it's possible that the molecule structure changes through resonance, and I can imagine that this can be measured to some extent.
But does this really better the sound quality, counteracting all the trivial degrading effects of ageing?
I like this kind of discussions, unfourtunately this argument is a never ending story!
A good built violin sounds good and will be better trough the years because the wood become more elastich, but, not all the old violins are good,I tried and repaired so many old vioins and many of those were really bad instruments, deaf and ugly, but for the customer just a kind of "untouchable fetish" just because those have 300 Yo.
There's no evidence in all the violin-making,the only thing that is sure its that a good violin, perfectly built, sounds greate and follow through the years, the life and the stile of the player.
I very much agree with all of them. Especially with the "fetish" part.
For me it is very angering, that my master (a Hungarian luthier) can hardly sell his own instruments, although they are very fine ones, because everybody wants an old instrument (and is willing to pay much-much more for it) or if not an old one, then a copy of an antique.
Instead of just listening and feeling for themselfs...
I feel this "fetish" is very unjust and hurts modern luthiers in the long run.
hehe, tell me about it... known as psyco-acoustics amoung guitar builders. Very annoying.... it means the next generation are being deprived of experience!
as a side note, many guitar makers do have evidence about the aging of wood and he affect on tone and projection. guitars seem to be experimented on more than other instruments for some reason... how cruel....
can i also just ask, out of curiosity, how many playable Stradavarius's actually have the original tops on them?
Yes, I actually know about the scientific proof of wood getting more elastic over many years, and some minimal changes in molecular structure, etc.
But!
Who knows which is more important? This positive effect of age or all the other bad things, like humidity/temperature changes, small accidents that might happen over the decades, which are harmful?
This is similar I think to art. Basically every single antic painting is restored and has modern work "added" to it. Which is no bad thing of course.
Sir:
Please inform me if the gorgeous violin finished.

Beautiful violins, more people should consider a new master made instrument instead of buying an antique violin.
Very well done.

Well, I never said that age was the reason a violin sounds great. And yes, there is evidence, look it up.
thecandyman86 3 years ago
meant to say age wasn't the only main factor.

How could this possibly be measured objectively?
Thx

Sorry, meant it as a reply to thecandyman86.
