  • Boogity Boogity Boogity... Let's go fliping boys

  • @cousinearl216 Yeah DW rules!!!

  • So glad they paved the backstretch and added safer barriers as well. It keeps those cars from catapulting in the air one a piece of the car digs in the grass like we saw here with DW...

  • that car is sitting in the museum in daytona or charlotte i think

  • For the first 15 seconds, we were in Daytona, "Floride"

  • I never seen a car tear apart that much during a flip.

  • i remember seeing this.. i was 9yr old and DW was my Dads fav driver...i thought that was the craziest wreck ever when i was a kid

  • Tommy Kendall's crash, then DW, the McDuffie. Those are some bad crashes that happened in such a short amount of time.

  • I saw that car at the darlington museum today on my way to myrtle beach. unbelieveable that most of the chassis still intact. Good thing Darrel had minor injuries.

  • I was against the fence there in turn 3, and DWs car was flipping and flying right towards me, or so it seemed. Scared me so bad I ran and left my beer!

  • In the car I just pooped myself....

  • I remember watching this and thinking Darrell was dead, but thank God I was wrong. love you DW!

  • It was probably the only time DW's mouth was quiet!

  • This was when Nascar was the best!! As soon as winston sold out is when it went down hill.

  • I was at this race way back then, but this track is so big it was hard to see the crash from our seats at the entrance to pit road. This car is also on display with a video loop of it playing at the track at Darlington.

  • Yep AK got tapped a bit. Does not take much.

  • It actually looks like Kulwicki got touched, if you notice his car swurves to the left quickly, faster than it would have if he turned down

  • good ol alan kulwicki, does anybody even remember him. i do

  • @allsmurfedup yep the 1992 Winston Cup Champion. I think any true fan remembers him.

  • @allsmurfedup

I do....it's amazing how many names they mention of guys who have died since this race

  • @allsmurfedup I hated Fords, but you gotta love " The Underbird ".

  • @dickstraten i agree, don't like fords but Underbird is pre awsome to be on a car

  • @dickstraten That's "Thunderbird".

  • @The1994Gforce No, it's definitely "The Underbird" Alan Kulwicki.

  • @allsmurfedup I do!!! I still my shirt from the Hooters 500 when he won the championship. Still havent seen anything to match the racin that day.

  • @allsmurfedup yeah, hes kind of an inspiration to me. whenever things get tough with racing (with money and broken parts) i look to him. even though he isnt around anymore. R.I.P.

  • that was cool(glade DW was OK I like him)

  • i though that was micheal waltrip hmm

  • thats why they said "come on DW".

  • No Dear. This is from 91. Michael was in the Yellow Pontiac sponsored by Pennzoil. DW was in the 17 he owned, sponsored by Western Auto

  • driver isn't waving to the fans.....they're waving to let their family and crew (watching the tv screens)know that they're ok. duh!

  • Shut the fuck up you gay Democrat, it's the one of the last great american sports and all you want to do is ruin America.

do every one a favor and jump off a cliff and die.

  • Last great American sport? I'm a BIG fan have been for over 30 years but what happened in your mind to the other four major sports in this country?

OHHHHHH do you mean it's one of the last WHITE sports in America? If so...thats FUCKEN DUMB!

  • So I assume you are biking to work everyday from your solar/wind powered house? Or are you just a f@ck!ng hypocrite?

  • He didn't wave to the fans because there's no fans over there you idiot announcers.

  • infield has fans you idiots. obviously you don't have brains

  • The fans aren't allowed past a certain point you idiot. And dollarcheeseburger, they weren't saying that he should have waved so you in turn are the idiot.

  • he could also wave to the fans on tv or are the fans not allowed to do that either idiot

  • Trust me the last thing on his mind was waving to the fans.... Idiot... lmao wait why do we keep ending our sentences with idiot?

  • because every other person thinks ur an idiot apperently

  • How would I be an idiot when I know for a fact the last thing on a drivers mind that has wrecked is waving to the fans? This is what goes through a drivers head after a wreck. Shock, fear, and then anger.

  • oh really.................... then why did micheal McDowel do it at texas and so many other drivers did it in the past ???

  • how the fuck he gonna wave to the fans when he is on a damn stretcher?

  • they dont strap your arms down on a stretcher and he wasnt really that hurt it was for safety purpeses

  • I miss those types of wrecks. the flips in the 90's were some of the best wrecks there were. Just as long as the driver is OK.

  • he was flipping out !!!

  • i think darrells has been upside down more than any other driver : \

  • I think Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, and Elliott Sadler come pretty close as well.

  • they might haha, i dont follow nascar as close as i do F1 or the other series... but i racings racing in my opinion

  • i think rusty wallace has more

  • yeah i do to

  • Interesting tidbit I was told by someone who knows Joe Ruttman - everyone was so concerned about DW, and rightfully so, but if you look at it Ruttman took a very hard lick when his car first came down after they hit the access road; he had hurt his leg but no one came to his assistance for a long time because everyone was over by DW's car. Fortunate that both escaped serious injury that day.

  • CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TALK TO ME

i cant watch this video 6j

  • SICK, MAN!!

  • there is a photo of this crash, with DW's arm extended out the window, as if to be waving at the fans.

  • Your name sure explanis what you are!

  • Go away Nerd!

  • nvrmd

  • dw is amazing! lets go racing! notice it says floride in the begining.. boogity boogity boogity!

  • @vettedude418 that's because this was a foreign [french, actually] sports network broadcast.......

  • broadcast were so serous back the unlike now when they just goof around

  • do u like sreious or goffing around

  • i like serious...ive be seeing crashes today when the announcers be laghing while the crash is happening. bob jenkins and the gang would never do that, they would be concerned about the conditon of the driver. not laughing there asses off because of some "irony" or something.

  • ahhh i see were u going....

  • I'm with you but I think that MAYBE they just goof around is because the cars nowadays are a LOT safer so they don't have much to worry about. Maybe they think a driver can survive ANY crash after seeing Michael McDowell's flip at Texas.

  • man, i remember that crash, i had really thought he was either dead or very seriously injured

  • one of my all time favorite drivers. great skills driving. the 'muhammad ali' trash talker of stock car racing. once made the comment he could say wahtever he wanted about dale earnhart's team because,"they wouldn't be able to read it, anyway". lol!

  • Earnhardt also put him in his place after he said that to :D

  • darrell waltrip rules

  • darrell waltrip rules

  • I can't believe how high that dirt went when DW started flipping in the grass.

  • I was at this race also. Here are some DW numbers for those who doubt his driving excellence. Modern Era Records Consecutive Top-10 points seasons: 15, 1975-1989 Consecutive Top-10 finishes: 22, 1983-84 Consecutive wins from the pole: 4, 1981 Consecutive pole-winning seasons: 13, 1974-1986 Most road course poles: 9
  • You're in the minority

  • Well stop watching it then. DW is the most intelligent announcer there is not to mention he's one of the all time greatest drivers.

  • 84 wins and 3 championships is hardly overrated. I don't particularly like Jeff Gordon but I give him credit for being one of the great drivers because I'm mature enough to give credit where it's due. I'm sure DW doesn't really care what you think anyway.

  • wow, Earnhardt could of taken out in this incident...damn...I remember when they used that accident scene and put it into a Western Auto commercial. Yeah i noticed that Sterling Marlin #22 Maxwell House Ford bumped Alan's car and caused him to bump into DW's car...ouch...just another "restrictor plate accident"

  • I thought he flipped closer to 11 times. that's always what I've heard though

  • I love how nonchalant Ned Jarrett is describing the wreck while it's happening.

  • anyone notice the guy behind kulwicki hit him?

  • Marlin got into the back of Kulwicki, then Kulwicki got loose and slid down into Waltrip.

  • I was at this race in the infield facing the backstretch. Watched the wreck happen right there in person. After the race I went out in the infield and got one his coil springs and I got put in the newspaper for it too. A kid next to us got his water bottle, goggles, a coil spring, and bunch of sheet metal.

  • 84 wins and 3 titles, yeah sure no talent. Need to do your research before making a comment like that.

  • are u crazy????? 84 winsaint shit!! lmao jk.. hahaha

  • Last Time I checked Jeff Gordon didn't have 84 wins

  • He will soon

  • He won 12 races in back to back seasons... that's obnoxiously good, I don't care what you think. Yeah um 84 wins, 3 championships, the guy is a legend and always will be period.

  • DW! NOOOOOO!!!!

  • he rolled halfway down the backstretch, wow.

  • they ran plate from 1988-2007

    wat u smoking

  • The reason he flipped was because he hit that access road. I don't think he would have rolled otherwise.

  • I remember seeing this crash in a commercial for Western Auto on a race I have taped. The talladega race with the Davey Allison tribute.

  • Nascar has gotten to screwed up to watch i hate it now the same fucking people win.

  • their called "eras" dont know if you realised but every so often there comes a period of time where certain drivers dominate....i guess its been screwed up since the beginning in your regards

  • oh man that was before restrictor plates.. they are safer but the racing isnt as good

  • plates came in during the 1988 daytona 500

  • oh i thought they only came in like 97 my bad

  • @fwayndo1 I think they did have plates, but they don't have the roof flaps, and the infield was full of grass, which makes it easy to tumble.

  • @nascarfanatic2425 definitely had plates, but honestly the roof flaps wouldn't make a difference in this kind of flip anyway

  • @erasetoimprove I know, but I was just saying. What caused the flip was all that grass. Darrell's car dug into the ground, the when it hit the strip of pavement, it just took off tumbling.

  • i was like about 3 feet away from that wreck of a car in July last year at the Darlington museum!! it was an awesome feeling! and i got a picture of Fireball Roberts car!! that was a good day!

  • WOW in 1991 they didn't have any grandstands on the backstrectch. When I went to the Pepsi 400 in 2002 there were 100,000 people on the backstrectch alone!

  • Actually If you look closely you can see a small grandstand

  • yea, i was at that race, (the 2002 one), i barely remember it though.

  • That was a bad one

  • the radio broadcast was wild for this crash noo i dont have it but i did here it and allen bestwick called it!!

  • Thanks for posting this! I've never seen the full ESPN clip before. :)

  • Waltrip ended up breaking his leg in that accident and it put him out for a few races. He returned later in the year.

  • You're off a year, he broke his leg in 1990. He had a concussion and little else from this one if I recall right.

  • does anyone have his crash in 1990 in the tide ride?

  • i've always wanted to see this. thanks

  • nasty tumble... thx freshgeek
