@wrestletube1 Not quite, the level design is very different in this version and there are some differences between the MD and Amiga games as well. MCD and Amiga versions are very similar though.
I played my Game Gear until it would only come on for two seconds. I ended up giving half of my games to a friend and selling the rest. I threw the thing away. I was ecstatic to find out that Game Gear games are coming to the 3DS.
@Flackon Guidelines, if you will ;) But I also try to judge the consoles on their own merits, GH is pretty impressive for the portable GG. BT, yeah, well it is better than the GB port at least.
i love my game gear! i had these when i was a kid: shinobi sonic the hedgehog columns ecco the dolphin dragon crystal castle of illusion the lucky dime caper mortal kombat. and now i've got: shinobi shinobi 2 dr. robotnik's mean bean machine poker face paul's poker columns super columns st:tng advanced holodeck tutorial primal rage what games did/do you have?
@VirtualBilly Nice collection, I didn't have that many as a kid (I also owned a GB) but I borrowed 99-1 carts from friends on a regular basis. I remember owning Land of Illusion, Jurassic Park, Shinobi, Wonder Boy 3, Halley Ways, the 4-in-1 cart and Ninja Gaiden. Didn't even know about 8-bit Sonic back then.
@Alianger nice. i didn't know anything about wonder boy until discovering the emulation scene years later, but i remember 8-bit sonic all too well. when i got my gg, it came with columns and a mail-in voucher for sonic, which took all of "8-12 weeks" to arrive. then it didn't work, lol. so we called and were able to send it back and get another one another 12 weeks later, and it ended up being one of the most stupidly difficult games i've ever played. but i beat it with all the chaos emeralds!
@VirtualBilly Yeah, I mean the TV Tuner. When i was very very young we was camping and my Father and I watch tv on a game gear. And I thinked, this is not normally :D
i remember this console! Some fun times, especially with SOnic 1, that was quite nice, but Sonic 2 was mind numbingly hard, i remember Crystal Warriors as well, great game :)
Like just about everyone else who commented here, I think Game Gear > Game Boy. Sure, the Game Gear ate batteries at an alarming rate, but Nintendo took years to arse themselves to provide their handhelds with an own source of light. And AC Adapters + Battery Pack made up for that flaw anyway.
Does anybody know how long a Game Gear Battery Pack can last if fully charged?
hey everybody. i have the blue game gear. the problem is, it eats up the battery fast. it still fun to play them. i have like pac-man, sonic 2, and taz-mania.
@Alianger The screen wasn't that blurry. Fantastic tribute! The best Game Gear tribute on Youtube. I have watched this so many times in the past and it has renewed an interest in the Game Gear for me. Keep up the great work!
@Alianger Its a well-loved rpg with an arabian/ali bab/aladdin style story. The music is VERY good, and is Yuzo Koshiro quality (it might actually be him, but I just can't remember)!! There's speech for the genie aswell, and the graphics and controls are really nice. I still play this game now and again. Also, if you hold the up button when you press start on the title screen then you get a secret (albeit, not very well hidden) sound test menu. I love it if you hadn't guessed XD
I have had an obsession with the Game Gear since a friend of mine brought his rented one over one day back in the early 90s!! Then I got one a year later for christmas and it was the shit!!! Would stay up all night in bed playing Sonic, Batman and Shinobi!!!
I actually got one a year ago on ebay, and am STILL trying to beat Sonic 1!!!
It also had a good market life, a respectable 6 years. Unfortunately, peoples view of this formidable system is skewed by the fact the 8-bit Game Boy had a market life span rivaling the Atari 2600.
I know really, if you ask me. Sega was more successful when trying to make a good system then Nintendo. Although I did like a majority of Nintendo games and still do, Nintendo shined in the game area.
I'm not sure when those came out. I've got one and I agree, that was the best way to get life out of the Game Gear for on-the-go gameplay.
But I think people wanted to have longevity in their system's life outside of the car also. And that's why a lot of people stuck with the Gameboy, sadly.
Not to mention, depending on the price, whether people would want to plop down some more cash for a car adaptor or not.
My experience with getting it to work in the sunlight has always been a bitch. And even when it does work, you have to tilt it to just the right angle.
@MaxiMachine Well back then it was the parents buying the systems and games and the game gear was $169.99 compared to the game boys $89.99 the batterys on the game gear lasted about 2 hours and about 12hrs or more on game boy.
@MaxiMachine, sega failed because of foolish economic manouvers (sorry for my bad engish). For me it's still the greatest game company...it's a pity they don't produce consoles anymore... have a good day.
@MaxiMachine The shame was that the Gameboy came out in 89, and the Gamegear was two years later. Two years of gameboys already out there, and with it still being too new to upgrade, plus you got the fanboys (and girls) trying to put down the gamegear as if it threatened even their own existence - they picked on things like the Gamegear's power consumption and that Mario and Tetris wasn't on it. The truth is that the Gamegear was a brilliant games machine, and well worth playing even today
@MaxiMachine Sega didn't fail at all, at least not in Europe. The problem in America was the Video Game crash, that nintendo saved the Video game market, and people knew, that they make good games, and were thinking others make shitty games (Like the ones that made the Video game crash occur). People in America didn't trust any other company, like Sega for example, no matter how awesome they were. Stupid Americans!
SeventhSun I read your comments and your home page. What a loser you are. Go live in Disneyland because that's what you think Japan is?
The truth is that Gameboy was a piece of garbage. Nintendo is an evil company that didn't improve it because they were making millions off idiots just by clever advertising. It was crap in 89, it was certainly crap in 1999. Game Gear was flawed yes, but at least it attempted a modern experience. And I played Columns & Crash Test dummies. SOLID!!
The Nomad was the best handheld for the time it came out. It was only marginally more expensive than Gameboy. But experience was infinitely better. You could play 2 players! for the price of one 6in1 cartridge .. you had 6 games instead of 1 terrible gameboy one! You could plug into the tv! Basically good things fail, rubbish that is marketed is successful!
Well it's personal really, and personally nothing I played on gameboy took me away on a journey like Ecco1 & 2, defenders of oasis, last bible or shining force gaiden did. So whatever. As a kid gamegear felt like magic, Like it was a special thing to own, I'll never forget watching tv on it at break time with my friends. Gameboy felt like a standard handheld system. (yes it had some great games). I'm Not stupid, most machines have good games. I don't care if they don't strike gold in the market.
ok, if you thought so. Its clear and magical for sonic and ecco to me. So good for you...Emulators make it look like some dos game... nothing beats my magic night rayearthor any comfy gamegear, emulators are such a joke to me, you can't chill or zone in on ecco on your bed with it on a fat computer or lap top. You and me are very different creatures.
ok...get a PSP, shit, I even have an SMS/GG emulator on my PHONE. PSP screen>Game Gear screen. Its also lighter and has a rechargeable battery. I have 2 game gears actually, but its no comparison to be wondering what in the name of blurry mess is going on vs. a very clear and sharp picture on a TFT LCD.
Well that will never happen to my soul. Naturally what you've said feels awful to me, but I mean I'm just me. When my gamegear putts out one day, its gameover for gamegear games. Anyway I just got ecco 2 for it. I love those eccos. I can read what they say perfect by the way...
I played mine until it died. It would come on for three seconds and then shut off. Even if I could get it to work for a minute the sound didn't work. I eventually threw it away. I miss it.
say i have to ask, since u have shining force on game gear, i have shining force 1 and 2 on mega drive - is sword of hajya as good as those ? i live in uk and i was like 4-5 when it came out so i never saw it once :(
i used to love the game gear. i had 1 of these & my neighbour had the atari lynx. we thought we were well cool! lol. we used 2 play sonic & some 'summer games' game with surfing on. batteries used 2 get rinsed in no time so we'd 'recharge' them on a hot radiator for an hour 2 get another 15mins playing time!! lmao.....those were the dayz
On a similar note I just read an interview with a dev from sega (the producer for thunder force vi) and he said that for his next project he was hoping to make a new space harrier or fantasy zone game. Whether or not it would happen depends on how well TF6 does commercially.
How is the emulation? I was thinking about getting a psp for that purpose but now I have an iPhone, just hoping someone develops a proper joypad for it. The original GG is pretty much unusable in comparison ^^
It's perfect (as long as you get a PSP SLIM with the improved D-PAD of course, and check if it's hackable beforehand. Google for more info).
Hell, emulation on the PSP is simply amazing.
SNES, Megadrive, Master System, Sega CD, DOSBOX (runs pretty well with EGA and even some VGA games), ScummVM, GB,GBC,GBA, PSX (!!!), NeoGeoCD,MVS, CPS1, CPS2, ATARI, Amiga (!!), C64, MSX etc.
There's also ports like ExultPSP (Ultima 7: The Black Gate+Serpent Isle), Flashback, Star Control and lot's of others.
Hehe, yeah well I wanted to cover as much of the game library as possible while keeping the quality of the games at a high level. GG wasn't that big back in the day but there's a lot of good stuff for it especially if you import.
Great video for nostalgia. I never owned a GG, I had a GB. Now, I buy all the old systems whenever I can find them.. I buy them. I guess making up for voids in my youth.
way cool !!!!, but what about the T.V. tuner ??, i still have mine work's great(had it hook'd up to a vcr @ 1 time)and look'd good with the magnafier.
Well, I did own one and it was awesome but since it's not a game I didn't give it high priority ^^ I guess I'll put more focus on interesting peripherals next time.
true, it's not a game, i just got excited when i seen the video, and it reminded me of all the gg gear/games that i have and you dont see much mention of the tuner, a vid on peripherals would be cool.
Anyone who noticed the ridiculously inspirado-infused music for this video must absolutely google the Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra. LIFE CHANGING! Thank you so much for putting this up, Alianger.
You had the Ecco title but I didn't see any game play! That was the only game I played besides Sonic, haha, I'm such a girl. I still have my GG, it's awesome.
i didnt see phantasy star, i think? its hard to think that phantasy star was made for game gear. my brother in law in japan gave me his copy and said that it is a good game, i didnt play it to much because of my bad kanji skills. he didnt need it any more because his mom smashed his game gear with her foot like godzilla!!!
kishin douji zenki, pretty cool action platformer with some adventure elements. I thought the sailor moon games were much better on the stationary consoles.
can you recomend 10 games for me, i like almsot anything so just list your favorites. I already have Jurassic Park: The Lost World (very fun imo) and Sonic 2 and Tails (fun but freaky hard). Thank you, and great video.
god job dude i could find some games that a was loking for to emulate and now i find them thanks to you, one game that no apear and its great too its panzer dragoon mini i recomenden to u and thank you again

I already told you.

The best game (I thought) for Game gear was Tail's adventure. that, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Stargate.

what a console---factory panic was my all time fav game!!!

Great video tribute, I'm glad I still have my game gear. It works perfect. In fact, I was just playing madden 95 on it the other day. 5/5 stars.
camTRON87 2 years ago 3
I played mine until it died. It would come on for three seconds and then shut off. Even if I could get it to work for a minute the sound didn't work. I eventually threw it away. I miss it.

i thought mortal kombat 2 was really good on the gamegear

good memories, Say, I have Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, how much is it worth?
californiansteven 3 years ago
say i have to ask, since u have shining force on game gear, i have shining force 1 and 2 on mega drive - is sword of hajya as good as those ? i live in uk and i was like 4-5 when it came out so i never saw it once :(
Legopancake 2 years ago
I'm not sure, I never played the Mega Drive. The Sword of Hajya is very addictive and is set up like a Pokemon game, if that helps any.

u mess 3 great fighting games for the system, samurai shodown, fatal fury special and mortal kombat series
ROYALDISASTER 3 years ago
Mess? There aren't any great fighting games for the system but yeah, FF was alright.
Alianger 3 years ago
samurai shadown for gg had better gameplay than the snes version and the graphics were awsome at the time, take a look of that one ;)
Excuse the bad english
ROYALDISASTER 3 years ago
sure but not better than MD or Neo Geo right? Yeah no problem.
Alianger 3 years ago
we are talking about handhelds...
ROYALDISASTER 3 years ago
yes and there's not much reason to play a fighter on a handheld unless it's the NGP or GBA.
Alianger 3 years ago
i think that samurai shodown for game gear and killer instinct for original brick game boy are the exeption but i respect ur opinion
ROYALDISASTER 3 years ago
i used to love the game gear. i had 1 of these & my neighbour had the atari lynx. we thought we were well cool! lol. we used 2 play sonic & some 'summer games' game with surfing on. batteries used 2 get rinsed in no time so we'd 'recharge' them on a hot radiator for an hour 2 get another 15mins playing time!! lmao.....those were the dayz

PS.
I love Space Harrier theme, heh.
Jinx1337 3 years ago
On a similar note I just read an interview with a dev from sega (the producer for thunder force vi) and he said that for his next project he was hoping to make a new space harrier or fantasy zone game. Whether or not it would happen depends on how well TF6 does commercially.
Alianger 3 years ago
Plus, listening to music, reading comicbooks/mangas, watching movies etc.
Just don't count on that many quality native PSP titles. There are gems, but there aren't many (sadly).
Jinx1337 3 years ago
I'm playing lots of GameGear games using an emulator on the PSP.
I still have my childhood gamegear along with a huge sack of original games (my parents had to spend quite a fortune on it).
Jinx1337 3 years ago
How is the emulation? I was thinking about getting a psp for that purpose but now I have an iPhone, just hoping someone develops a proper joypad for it. The original GG is pretty much unusable in comparison ^^
Alianger 3 years ago
Jinx1337 3 years ago
Awesome! Yeah it's a shame about the lack of good new games but with that kind of back catalogue available I guess it doesn't really matter.
Alianger 3 years ago
Awesome! Really brings back the memories. The music works well with it too.

where did you get this version of this song? I like it :)
addprisoner 3 years ago
just google "tanguy ukulele orchestra" he's awesome ^^
Alianger 3 years ago
where did you find an english version of Shining force 3?
st1ka 3 years ago
you need a translation patch, I think they have it on romhacking or shining force central.
Alianger 3 years ago
thanks :)

I have The GG Aleste (Power Strike II), but it's pretty much unplayable due to the blurry screen.
JasonAllen 3 years ago
Do you own all of these ?!!!!!!!!!!?
Evilmonkey989 3 years ago
not anymore, why?
Alianger 3 years ago
just wondering because thats insane amount of games ( its cool )
Evilmonkey989 3 years ago
Hehe, yeah well I wanted to cover as much of the game library as possible while keeping the quality of the games at a high level. GG wasn't that big back in the day but there's a lot of good stuff for it especially if you import.
Alianger 3 years ago
dude thats awesome i only have a couple
Evilmonkey989 3 years ago
Great video for nostalgia. I never owned a GG, I had a GB. Now, I buy all the old systems whenever I can find them.. I buy them. I guess making up for voids in my youth.

dougd1015 3 years ago
way cool !!!!, but what about the T.V. tuner ??, i still have mine work's great(had it hook'd up to a vcr @ 1 time)and look'd good with the magnafier.
trocker222 3 years ago
Well, I did own one and it was awesome but since it's not a game I didn't give it high priority ^^ I guess I'll put more focus on interesting peripherals next time.
Alianger 3 years ago
true, it's not a game, i just got excited when i seen the video, and it reminded me of all the gg gear/games that i have and you dont see much mention of the tuner, a vid on peripherals would be cool.
trocker222 3 years ago
Thanks for a great video. It brought back lots of happy memories!

Search for Andre Duracell.. He does a great cover of the space harrier theme. :)

Anyone who noticed the ridiculously inspirado-infused music for this video must absolutely google the Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra. LIFE CHANGING! Thank you so much for putting this up, Alianger.

This has been flagged as spam show
just do a search for "genesis medley imports" :) or look in my channel (click my name).
Alianger 3 years ago
i didnt see phantasy star, i think? its hard to think that phantasy star was made for game gear. my brother in law in japan gave me his copy and said that it is a good game, i didnt play it to much because of my bad kanji skills. he didnt need it any more because his mom smashed his game gear with her foot like godzilla!!!
edotsuki333 3 years ago
hah, funny story about the gamegear ;) no, the only PS titles on GG are text adventure spinoffs, and not that good imho.
Alianger 3 years ago
I have the Sega genesis with 256 sega games ^.^

kishin douji zenki, pretty cool action platformer with some adventure elements. I thought the sailor moon games were much better on the stationary consoles.
