Every single war movie is going to have a bit of holly wood b.s. in it. That's natural, but it doesn't mean it's a horrible movie, or as though children or adults themselves had to never go through an experience like that.

Almost every movie has hollywood parts added, even like Pearl Harbor with the little romance triangle.

I believe that he is one of the people in the camp, I heard his name a couple of times during the scene when Basie bows to the Japanese officer and gets beaten up, there are a couple of close-up shots of Dainty in that scene but even I'm not sure where exactly he is, just my guess.
