They are going back to their roots more and more every time I hear of them again... Who can better sing an original Irish song than this family who originates from Ireland???
Love them all, they make my heart sing every time I hear one of their songs...
I have never heard this song sung beautifully before.the only time I heard it was by a pub landlady. who had a good voice but sung in a unique key which could not be matched I had to retune my guitar to accompany her. I managed to get the last few verses with her and was congratulated by two musicians who had noticed my struggle!
Thanks to my friend, Marlene (srawberrywineaazz) for sharing.
I absolutely love that song! I think everyone in Ireland knows that song, play it for matches in Croke Park, concerts or pubs n you'll have the whole crowd sing along...just a brilliant feeling!
I come from a family of 10 children and everyone of us play a instrument,We didn't have to be coaxed or pressed,it is a natural want to play and sing.
It is in our blood.
I think us Irish are more comfortable expressing our emotions through song
Do bhain me an taitneamh as an fis seo,go raibh mile maith agat a Patricia!.
The english treated the irish like shit for centuries so why shouldn't the irish have songs to express the grief that the english have caused us? Time is a healer but when the english act vulgar towards the grieving process one cant help but hold a grudge. My great great grandad was killed alongside his brothers standing up against the british, and my great grandad was tortured by the british after the easter rising and was eventually killed!I'm lucky to be alive. So i'l hold my grudge!
Yes I have heard of Potato blight, a fungal disease that struck the potatoes in Ireland, at a time when potatoes was all the residents had to pay for their living. If you read your history books re:Ireland The Hunger years 1845 - 1851, you would see that there was indeed indifference shown by Trevelyan /English Govt/ a Liberal, who actually said that not enough irish population died to make any significant difference.Callous or what!
People don't forget how the working class lived in The East End, or Work House meanness. There was poverty that we can only imagine, but The Potato Famine was a Holocaust in Ireland that the people who farmed the potatoes couln't help, but the Govt of the time could, and didnt. It wasn't only the Irish that suffered. What I am saying is that neither you or I, or anyone else should ever make remarks that trivialise this time in history, but that's what you did I'm afraid.
You call it trivialisation, I just see balance and comparison. The Irish spend so much time looking inwards that they dont see others sufferings and history.
No you are not crying, and I am sure you have done wonderful work for your country and your platoon, but nobody has cried here, either, but somebody's past determines their attitude to the future, and it is not easily forgotten, and shouldn't be, and songs are sung about the past in all Nations, and that is not crying, though personal grief can and does make you cry.
Yes I understand all that. But the Irish seem to love to be victims and this attitude will never help them heel, that is my point.
The governments of the past and even today use the young working class men of this country as fodder for their ends. Sad yes but where are all the video's and songs for them.
Hello Bill, I don't know about enjoying being victims, but sometimes a past has so much trauma in it that the healing comes in the respect that that past has placed upon it, by others.
I know what you're saying, but what about the TV prog for Soldier victims of Afghanistan and the appeal for help, that's as good as a video, and CD, 'Hero' sung by X factor contestants, top selling for our injured, who got hurt for their country. I hope they and their families all benefit I really do.
Yes you have a SMALL point? The money however will not help the dead and let's be fair even if they collect 5 million, so what.
It would be like throwing 20 million to the poor of Africa.
The British/UK/GB have been a wicked people at times but also a force for good, history confirmes this as a fact, funny then that most only like the story about the Empire ect.
As I said the Irish sometimes think they are educating us, when we have in fact had our own pain.
No I know money doesn't bring someone back, but it can sometimes help the ones left behind.I expect you have been to battle torn places, and have experienced things that are stressful and very frightening. But lads that have given their all are appreciated by all, except those who have no feelings and don't understand patriotism, and sacrifice.
What does your Para Pathfinder Platoon specialise in, do you jump out of parachutes.
No not my heritage. i have irish family but i consider myself to be english. and the irish arent the only country in the world who have songs that, by your definition depict them as 'victims and the underdog' the english included. its not about being a victim its about memorial.
@SCD4 We did move on jackass. My dad was a well known Irish Musician who is in the Irish Music Hall of Fame. Id mention his name here but Im not looking for notoriety here. I am his son an Irish American. I did not hear my father cry about the blight but I saw my mom and dad buy two homes in America and they came here with nothing. That's pretty dam resiliant to me.
@SCD4 No dumb ass your the one who implied we are still acting like victims in your statement above. My response was to that not crying about anything and because your to unintelligent to figure it out for yourself my dad was mentioned so as to imply there is no victimnhood here at all. Im sure youll have a problem figuring this out for yourself so Ill spell it out. Obviously your a product of that third world country you come prom you pussy
@SCD4 Ha Ha ha wow looks like i got ya going there ha. Well I say you should shut the fuck up in respect to commenting on what they do. I mean after all how does their complaining affect you in your everyday living? Ha jackass! You freak and what are you a british man living on Irish soil. You better get your fukin ass out of there before some toughy comes over and whips your faggot ass or at least get back in the trailer with your mother and keep her warm you freak HA ha hde ha ha ha LOL Pussy
@SCD4 Dude don't try using my shit back at me, be original. I own you now. No one can ever defeat me psychologically or in smack talk. Ultimately I fuk everyone up. If I got paid for my fukin greatness Id be worth biliions. I have never meet one fukin man on this planet I could not whip, not one and I dont see it ever happening. Man do I love myself . I truly am like God..tough ornary and just
@SCD4 Sorry dude but your comebacks at this point are lame. Once you used my stuff I knew I owned you. No one has ever beaten me at smack talk pal and you are just another casualty. Man the irish are toughh people boy, got to love it
@SCD4 Ok if that makes you feel better. As my mom used to say let them think what they want. It never made more sense than now lol Best of luck t ya asshole lol
Why not, they have the right to remember their dead descendants, who died while food was exported out of Ireland to England, and sanctioned by rulers who were indifferent, to the plight of the starving, and helpless.
ITS NOT A CELTIC SONG ! its ireland.. recently written like geeze man.. and this person doesnt do it justice . listen to The Dubliners sing it. they own it
Joey can finally sing when Paddy, John, Angelo and Jimmy are not there...I like it..He is a good father, sportman, singer...Joey, you are really a great boy...
Jimmy was at this concert but I could not get a good view of him. Angelo is solo now and will not be a part of The Kelly Family for a while. Jimmy did not participated with the last Church tour but he is onstage with this Roncalli tour =) Jimmy is also working on his solo career by the way.
Great song I peformed it last year when i was 13 ive put the video on above hope you enjoy.

The Irish and Scottish who share a common history also share the same language and culture and song.
Singing is part of our culture,it is our collective memory and kept us through sad and happy times.
Irelands history was particularly sad so it is no surprise that many songs are sad.
Gaelicy songs and instruments like the harp and bagpipes were banned by the English too.
Now we hold them pride of place.
Now we sing our hearts out.
"The Fields of Anthenry" is Irelands unofficial anthem.

Thank you you put that across very very well. More power to you.

You can use a search engine, well done.
People in Ireland forget how working class people in England, Scotland or Wales lived at that time.
Go read some history books on the East End of London or the Work House.
The Irish think they have a monopoly on hard times, injustice etc.
Callous yes, that's the real world for many people.
As I said time to move on.
Trevelyan was a prat, not the first ot the last. Go read some Irish history as they also had plenty.
