For the crime of criticizing Hitler, showing a sympathetic depiction of Jewish people (most Americans believed Jews were to blame for Hitlers treatment of them at the time) and siding with the communists, or so the Mccarthyites claimed, Chaplin was excommunicated and had to flee to Europe. What a shame.
