  • What a great version! I've had this on audio since it was first aired 28 years ago (I used to tape off the TV with my cassette recorder). Switch was a pale imitation of The Tube for when that great show was in off-season, but they had some fab guests like EC here.

  • AB-FAB- an he's a plastic Scouser too

  • This song encapsules what I love about Elvis, when everybody was trying to write this book, he was working on the sequel

  • People who don't know the difference between "every day" and "everyday" shouldn't be allowed to use computers.

  • what? did they not have a single pair of glasses in your own size Elvis or did you rob Tweetie Pie? One of my all time favorite songs which confirms my theory (in my delusional mind) that WEIRDOS write the best songs...do you give workshops on finding your weirdo within? Cause you should man...you're the prototype.... do you still have those glasses? No....bet you sat on them in 1988 or Elton stole them....I know there's a story, a novel in there about those glasses alone...so...start writing...

  • Brilliant artist, awesome song, wonderful decade. I miss the 80's.

  • Hah, had this stuck in my head all damn day from the Wedding Singer, although at first I just could NOT remember where it was from; I was going crazy.

  • i love the way youtube comments are able to elicit so much of the milk of human kindness, so many definitive answers relating to who the best singers/ songwriters are, so much genuine insight and of course the truth.

I'm giving you a long look.

What a line, 6 words, so simple, yet written and sung by Elvis, and they become something timeless and full of heart and meaning.WOW. yes, Elvis is still the king!!

  • @SuperAntisocialite

except it's not "long look" it's "longing look"

  • A CLASS ACT.

  • good song, but he can't sing

  • such a beautiful song ..

  • One of my favorite Costello tunes. Any doubters of this guy's genius should listen to-read Beyond Belief. Right up there like a modern day T.S. Elliot.

  • This is the definition of "great performance"

  • his best song

  • This song and "She not the only flame in town is my favorite by this group. Elvis C. has a unique voice.

  • his goggles are fucking big, in'nit?

  • @PoireauMan68 why do you limey pukes always end a declarative sentence with an annoying little question? you made a statement that elvis's glasses are big. don't fucking ask me for confirmation of your arrogant opinion. you're a dolt, k?

  • @laffncryguy I don't buy or sell lemons and I have never done so. I have no intentions to sell lemon either. I have not the faintest idea why Declan Mc Manus has decided to move to americaca cos' frankly you're not worth two fucks. The abysmal level of your posting speaks for itself. Either learn to express yourself in an appropriate manner or rot or die or both.

  • Godispigfaggot are you wishing for a piece of him? As the the young generation say 'what a Ledge!

  • Sperm donor.

  • love this song

  • Thanks for posting this. Elvis is one of the best songwriters/performers ever.

  • Great to see a real LIVE version of this. What a superb song...

  • This song always makes me feel good and has for 26 years.

  • Super.

  • TIMELESS!

  • I play it every couple of weeks!! It was the first track I heard by him, and it remains one of the best yet the first four albums are amazing!

  • This was in "The Wedding Singer." Laugh out loud!

  • Here's MY Miss Claudia along with Caron (Wheeler/from 'Soul To Soul') doin background vocals for Elvis...released just before she signed with me full time...doin a FIERCE track of his that i love!!

  • I want to marry him.

  • Man, I remember listening to this when I was about 5...

    Havn't heard this in years....

  • My hero, when i was 13!! Loved his voice, made my own badge and wore it on my blazer at school, not the 'in crowd' was I? I would love to see him again. This song cheered me up in those days.

  • When I first heard him in 1978 I was wondering if he was going to be another New Wave flash in the pan.

Glad he is still around. Such talent as a sonwriter, and he really can play guitar, too.

  • yes, Elvis Presley sucks. Costello is Godly. Its funny, because for YEARS i steered clear of Elvis Costello subconsciously, because i hated ELVIS so much.. what a mistake.. but what a treat to discover Elvis Costello (real name Declan MacManus) .. a true genius.. so cool to go through all his old albums, which are all new to me;) this song KILLS!

  • I saw him live last night and this song was just pure amazing to hear in peroson.

  • That shit was TIGHT. Not bad for a pasty white guy.

  • Thats cos hes a child of mersey side

  • that kicked ass

  • Don't tell me you don't know the difference

Between a lover and a fighter

With my pen and my electric typewriter

Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal

I'd still own the film rights and be working on the sequel - EXCELLENT, very talented man.

  • hes cranked up on speed here

  • The best Elvis by far,Costello ROCKS

  • Yes he is because the "classic Elvis" sucks for me, it's the definition of cheesyness

  • You are without a clue, planoman74

  • and you are without tolerance, 1fattaya ;)

Because you don't seem to tolerate Elvis (Presley) critics at all...Until his death in '77 he was camp as camp can IMHO...Costello jettisons the campness that's why some guys say he "has been the best elvis by far".

  • best romantic songwriter eva

  • Romantic is not the word that comes to my mind, try 'sinister', 'sarcastic' and 'cynical'. No doubt though that this man is some sort of genius.

  • Excellent.

  • Comment removed

  • funky version sweet

  • ok i will

  • Even better -much much better!- than the one from the album, with that incredible TKO-ish brass section...

    WOW!

  • This song is so cool and meaningful!

I was born 2 years after this song came out and First heard it on Adam Sandlers "The Wedding Singer, Movie Album"

I try 'Everyday to write the book'

  • uʍop ǝpısdn ǝʇıɹʍ ı

  • I found Waldo.

  • your a dickhead

  • word no taste ha ?

  • diana krall's hubby. listen to his song "pills & soap" and "olivers army". real classics.

  • Very, very funky for a pasty white guy.

  • great tune, so catchy! - remember it from a tiny clip in the wedding singer in the limo!!!

  • "when your dreamboat turns out to be a footnote"

those are some of my favorite lyrics

    DeClan FTW!!!!!

  • Whata bass player.

  • Bruce Thomas has that motown-ish touch.

    Underrated bass player.

  • even on the over-produced songs, elvis & the Attractions manage through lyricism and musicianship to capture the attention...i know plenty of people who "can't stand him", but the right song in the right place can persuade even the most ferocious hater. the king is dead! long live the king!

  • garymonker,

Thanks for writing all of it for me.

Elvis is an absolut lyrical genius, in my opinion, and similar to your point, with the right music, (totally complete here)he has a song that is timeless.

    Thanks.

  • @garymonker Well said. Elvis Costello is brilliant!

  • @garymonker Plenty of people who don't like Costello? I hope they can jam as well as he can.

  • The words to this song rock

  • The bass player might have been a bit of an arsehole, but musically he was f***ing amazing (excuse my language...) - all great musicians here, but the bass line is definitely the highlight in this song

  • i love his glasses!! lol

  • he's so charismatic, ha

  • for some of us elvis speaks! eloquent as ever. today's so called arists barely speak english let alone begin to play an instrument or compose a song.. stay in school.

  • They couldn't write their own name.......I agree.

  • Going to see him open for the Police in Houston in May. Can't wait!!!

  • i have been singing this song for 25 yrs.everyday,everyday...

  • All your compliments and your cutting remarks,

are captured here in my quotation marks

    SUPERB!

  • get your own life.

  • genius

  • one of elvis best songs! one of my all time favs!

  • This song is great. I can go years in life and experience many changes, yet I still want to hear this song. I think that's the real test of greatness.

  • great song

  • The Real Elvis...Amen...

  • I like both Elvises

  • I like both too but Costello is better

  • dunno

  • dunno

  • Amen I agree

  • This song would be nothing without that kick azz bass.

  • Agreed, but then what do you do when the bass player stabs you in the back?

  • Everyday he writes a great song!

  • Well put brotha

  • Big ups to all of you, and especially you Elvis!!!!

  • everyday everyday everyday everyday i write the book. everyday

  • I agree with ATS68. I've peripherally liked Costello since I was in high school in the early '80s. But the older I get, the more I appreciate his incredible talent, genuine artistry, and unique voice. He's definitely pursuing great music across multiple genres and not just flash-in-the-pan music-industry mediocrity.

  • I have yet to find an Elvis Costello song or album that I don't like. Even if they take years to grow on me. He's a genius. Everyday I Write the Book was a gem right off the bat. He's the man.
