The Transformers modern movies don't SUCK, but they are mediocre, what brings it bac up is the incredible 3D animation and all special effects, which are simply incredible, but it's real-life format (with real characters) don't fit truly to the cartoon style, because in a physical movie, you must dose more the combat, in catroon or even 3d animation, it would probably have been better

Others didn't even make it into the film and were never seen again. And you're really telling chumps like Prowl and Huffer and Shockwave were sadly missed? Those guys sucked hard.

I saw it 4 years ago, on a dvd my dad lent to me. It was uncut, so all the swearing and shit was in there. I honestly don't think I've seen a better animated movie. Fuck you, Shia Lebouf. This is the real Transformers movie.
This definitely was a whole league better than the cartoon, the animation was leaps better, and like you, I think the deaths of some of the main characters was a huge gamble for Hasbro. Sure they wanted to sell more toys, but to kill off the old line and offend their customers? That really did give this movie an edge over other cartoons. That's one of the reasons I much preferred the comics, as they took a very edgy line with the Transformers, for example having Megatron go insane.

Never knew too much bout Transformers, they seemed cool, but I never cared for them. When I noticed James did this review, I decided I should watch this movie. I watched it, and I kinda liked it. I'm not sayin Im a Major Transformers fan now, but I gotta say, ita pretty interesting.
It's also worth noting that Leonard Nimoy ALSO voiced Sentinal Prime in the newest Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon as well as Galvatron I believe. He was also Spock on Star Trek, and in Dark Side of the Moon, he says "The needs of them many outweigh the needs of the few."
For those of you who don't know, those were Spock's famous last words.
This was a great movie. However, then next few episodes involve the ressureciton of prime... and it's pretty retarded. This was the first movie I ever remember seeing though. Great movie.
Ummm...No one would have ever guessed that Optimus Prime was going to die? The promos talked about this for months.
"Does Prime DIE? Then who would lead the Autobots? And what is the secret of the monster planet?"
That, plus the Rodimus Prime toy, was a dead giveaway that Optimus Prime was going to get killed. The other promos talked about "Prime and Megatron fight to the DEATH!"
That opening scrolling thing doesn't appear on the U.S. release of the movie. As I understand it, that's the UK version. That version also says at the end that Optimus Prime will return. Now whether that came in the video version after all the backlash from Prime dying, I'm not sure.
the new movies dont match this classic, if they kept the same robot designs, the similar personalities and personal touches of this 1980 movie with a emotional sound track and on top of that put in more still clips of the robots talking and interacting with each other and the humans then it would be much better, as it is the new movies have too much fast moving shallow violence and little connection to what made us love the old one, the music, the story and the PERSONALITIES and DESIGNS
We 80's kids had to grow us some balls. Our video games kicked our asses, our cartoons were beating the shit out of each other (and Disney had fuckin' Judge Doom murdering a shoe), you had to go outside and play to make friends, we had to actually be ON the phone TALKING to people, AND we had to watch Michael Jackson turn into a zombie. Once we grew brains and quit complaining about stupid stuff, we realized how cool the whole experience was.

I had a bizarre experience with this film. I remember seeing it as a kid, and specifically, memories of a scene that scared the shit out of me: several Autobots landing on a sort of space mausoleum, where ghosts of dead transformers popped out at them, wailing in torment. Of course, it's not in the movie. So what the hell was I remembering?

@AlexReynard ..You're welcome :) and I know what you mean too! Some of the cartoons after the movie are soo different from the original cartoons, you could feel WIERD for years after watching them. There was another episode, called 'Danny's Nightmare' that one had an effect on me for soooooooo long!!! that episode also goes by the name, 'Nightmare Planet' It's a very psychcological episode. ... But (like I said) the one you're reffering to is 'Dark Awakening.'
Actually I'm a Decepticon fan so I was actually happy that Megs finally got Prime. He was always the underdog against Optimus, it was never a challenge because Optimus was younger meaning he was more up to date than Megs. As a Decepticon fan it was nice to see the guys I liked finally win a battle

I watched this movie when I was little from a VHS Tape, and it was the first time knowing Transformers. And in that movie my favorite characters were actually all the G1 Transformers. I was "like fuck those new characters, where's the others that were shot? Are they still alive? Am I ever be able to see them again?" But no, still a good movie. At least a couple of then lived.
James! You were so lucky that your dad took you to see Transformers! I begged and begged like a mother fucker to my dad to take me to see it when I was nine. No go. He never went to see cartoons in the theater! Linkin Parks's music ain't got shit on this soundtrack! It gives such a heroic mood to the cartoon.
I saw this open day in theatres, I was and am still a huge Transformers geek. When Optimus died, I was bawling my eyes out. At that time it was the sadest moment in cinimatic history..................to me anyway
@stimpyca I was in shock in the entire movie and by the end I cried nonstop knowing there was no deus ex machina to save him. I was all cried out when RotF came out. I also didn't like Transformers 2 as much as Transformers(2007).
It was very bitter sweet. Killing optimus and changing megatron made all of us very upset and ended our time playing with transformers. But that led to girls so that was sweet!
I actully had this movie, and hadn't watched i8t in awhile. I had to get a new VCR because the old one broke.Once I finally did get a new one, the stupid thing ate my movie. I was left heart-broken, I had been planning to make that movie the first one I was going to watch.
I just saw this for the first time on Blu Ray... daym.
While I wouldn't consider myself a Transformers fan, I still enjoyed it as a fun action movie with a awesomely 80's soundtrack and exquistie animation by Toei (who also animated such animes like Fist of the North Star, One Piece and Dragon Ball). Oh and Grimlock makes me laugh, and the Weird Al part had me sides aching ;)
Oh and the Bayformers ones suck compaired to this!

I'm 31 and I specifically remember thinking when I watched this in the 80's, in the TV show no transformers ever got hit by gunfire (or lasers). Like all 80's movies or shows, no one could aim worth the damn. But then the movie came out and everybody was getting hit. I was kinda like huh?

Ummm...No one would have ever guessed that Optimus Prime was going to die? The promos talked about this for months.
"Does Prime DIE? Then who would lead the Autobots? And what is the secret of the monster planet?"
That, plus the Rodimus Prime toy, was a dead giveaway that Optimus Prime was going to get killed. The other promos talked about "Prime and Megatron fight to the DEATH!"

That opening scrolling thing doesn't appear on the U.S. release of the movie. As I understand it, that's the UK version. That version also says at the end that Optimus Prime will return. Now whether that came in the video version after all the backlash from Prime dying, I'm not sure.

the new movies dont match this classic, if they kept the same robot designs, the similar personalities and personal touches of this 1980 movie with a emotional sound track and on top of that put in more still clips of the robots talking and interacting with each other and the humans then it would be much better, as it is the new movies have too much fast moving shallow violence and little connection to what made us love the old one, the music, the story and the PERSONALITIES and DESIGNS

We 80's kids had to grow us some balls. Our video games kicked our asses, our cartoons were beating the shit out of each other (and Disney had fuckin' Judge Doom murdering a shoe), you had to go outside and play to make friends, we had to actually be ON the phone TALKING to people, AND we had to watch Michael Jackson turn into a zombie. Once we grew brains and quit complaining about stupid stuff, we realized how cool the whole experience was.
You had to be a badass to be a nerd in the 80's.

I had a bizarre experience with this film. I remember seeing it as a kid, and specifically, memories of a scene that scared the shit out of me: several Autobots landing on a sort of space mausoleum, where ghosts of dead transformers popped out at them, wailing in torment. Of course, it's not in the movie. So what the hell was I remembering?

There was another episode, called 'Danny's Nightmare' that one had an effect on me for soooooooo long!!! that episode also goes by the name, 'Nightmare Planet' It's a very psychcological episode. ... But (like I said) the one you're reffering to is 'Dark Awakening.'

Actually I'm a Decepticon fan so I was actually happy that Megs finally got Prime. He was always the underdog against Optimus, it was never a challenge because Optimus was younger meaning he was more up to date than Megs. As a Decepticon fan it was nice to see the guys I liked finally win a battle

I watched this movie when I was little from a VHS Tape, and it was the first time knowing Transformers. And in that movie my favorite characters were actually all the G1 Transformers. I was "like fuck those new characters, where's the others that were shot? Are they still alive? Am I ever be able to see them again?" But no, still a good movie. At least a couple of then lived.

Not only were they killed...they were killed pretty graphically.
Particulary in that first scene where Iron Hide, Ratchet, Brawn, and that one that leakes blood (fiery smoke) gushing from his mouth....brutal.
At least Optimus Prime gave as good as he got.

I just saw this for the first time on Blu Ray... daym.
While I wouldn't consider myself a Transformers fan, I still enjoyed it as a fun action movie with a awesomely 80's soundtrack and exquistie animation by Toei (who also animated such animes like Fist of the North Star, One Piece and Dragon Ball). Oh and Grimlock makes me laugh, and the Weird Al part had me sides aching ;)
Oh and the Bayformers ones suck compaired to this!
