Excellent video! I was almost ready to my hair out, thank you very much for posting this video. It's amazing how easy this process was when you know how to do it correctly.
im confused. i have a 21" iMac so is there a difference between this and the 27" one. do they have a different limit to how much RAM you can put in there?
@UKNOWIT88 As the iMac has four memory slots, if you are only adding two modules you certainly could add them without removing the two stock original modules.
@SuperEnigmation Yes! Also, this machine supports 8GB SODIMMS (which OWC sells certified for the 2011 iMac), so you can have 32GB of RAM if you'd like!
I have a 2011 21.5 IMAC with 4gb of ram. I just purchased from Crucial 8 gb more of ram, 4 gb on each of 2 memory sticks. Does it make any difference which slots I put the new crucial memory sticks into? ie, should I put my new Crucial memory sticks into the slots presently occupied by the apple memory sticks. the apple memory sticks have 2 gb on 2 memory sticks. When installed I'll have 12 gb of memory
Actually i just bought my iMac (2011 model, 3.4ghz i7) a couple of days ago and was able to find RAM on amazon.com for cheaper. Free shipping for purchases over $25 and it was sold by Amazon.com. I paid $126 for 16GB made by Kingston (KTA-MB1333/4G) which is a reputable company. Thanks and your welcome :)
@TheGodOfComputers There are 8GB modules, however, we haven't had any in stock since the 2011 iMac was released in order to MaxRAM test them in the machines. Hoping to have more late next week to test and know for sure.
i'd like to add additional 4GB of ram to my 21inch iMac, I read that it's better to have 2 pair of memory modules (4 x 2GB) instead of 2 x 2GB + 1x 4GB from a performance standpoint (Dual Channel). Is there really a huge difference? If I buy one 4GB module I'd still have room for one more later, and could easly upgrade to 12GB, otherwise I'd have to sell 2GB modules and then buy 4GB ones and possibly loose some money on it.
@esbi86 Yes, there is a slight performance difference when comparing the same amount of memory - having them installed as pairs to take advantage of the dual channel addressing is beneficial.
However, we've done a lot of testing with these (and previous models) and have found that more memory is always better than less. So if you're planning to add one 4GB module now and save the other slot for a future 4GB module, you'll probably be better off in the long run than filling up with 2GB modules.
@Raikkonus Not anticipating that to be an issue with our memory modules, however, we're currently out of stock on them to run our testing to officially support. Should have more in the next week or two to complete the testing.
@Raikkonus in some cases, yes, but the imacs only allow up to 16gb of ram. although, last year's model was said to only allow 8 but some were able to have 16gb of ram. so im not completely sure, but maybe.
I bought two 4GB modules and will be adding them to the two 2GBs already in. Should I leave the two 2GBs where they are and add the 4GBs above them? or should I have both of the 2s on one side and the 4s on the other? or does this not matter?
@rpn5722 i dont really think it matters. u can try it either way. it wont mess it up, but i would put one 2gb module on each side so that it is evenly weighted. but thats just me.
Just bought 16 gb ram

Does the entry level 21.5' model supports up to 16GB of RAM. Because you can't configure it up to 16GB at apple.com
ipodshady816 8 months ago
@ipodshady816 Yes, although not offered as a factory configurable option, you can install 16GB of memory in the 21.5" iMac Mid 2011 models.
