Thanks for you comments, I was not aware of that at all. Seem extraordinary that they would not use a US made Aircraft, but it was the age of 'King and Country' so I guess a blind obsession with all that is British was to be expected.
with the stupid Lyons Conservative Federal Government. The Civil Viation Board needed to buy a suitable aircraft to test the beacons and check their alignments. Suitable meant it had to have the same performance as the airliners and be of all-metal construction.
The government persistently obstructed the testing and commissioning of the beacons for operations by insisting that the aircraft must be of British manufacture, when no suitable British aircraft existed. They were all wooden.
It's true that the immediate cause of the accident was the presumed failure of the crew to keep a navigational log to prompt them to look out for reporting points. But there were several other very close shaves leading up to this disaster.
The crew should have been able to use a Lorenz UHF beacon installed at Essendon areodrome 18 months before, to guide them right to the areodrome. Then the navigational error would not have mattered.
