Forget the labels. America needs h.c. reform. It's interesting to note that in 1971 Republican Richard Nixon attempted a national health care plan. It was blocked by Democrats for partisan political reasons. Now it's the Dem.s that are proposing reform & the Republicans trying to kill it for partisan political purposes. Both parties care more for getting or holding power than about citizens. But h.c. reform is still needed.

It's just logical that forcing small businesses to pay new taxes and forcing them to buy health insurance for employees that they weren't previously covering on top of the added costs of determining what the new regulations are and paying someone to insure the business is in compliance will break many small businesses. Those that manage to comply with the new federal burdens will be less likely to add to their workforce due to the new costs.

Obama wants to correct the market failures in healthcare so that we can provide healthcare to all Americans as all civilized nations do. It will not raise the deficit, the CBO has established this, and they are completely neutral and professional. This will also not destroy the healthcare industry, it will make it competitive and eliminate the current oligopoly that is artificially inflating prices and causing inefficiency above any state sponsored system on earth.

Medicare has largely been a success and most Americans support it overwhelmingly, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac failed along with and in partnership with the entire financial industry through nothing Congress put in motion (Sub-Prime lending guidelines the Bush Administration put in place in the early 90's) but rather because inappropriate high risk investment strategies that were voluntary and industry wide. None of this has a thing to do with the CBO though one way or the other.

Number of doctors and nurses per capita is ever so slightly higher in the US, but only by a hair!

Healthcare costs about half as much per person compared to US healthcare, everyone has it, the expenditures as part of GDP and as part of government revenue are lower per person for healthcare than in the US which I find stunning, given that means we could have universal healthcare for less than the gov. pays now...

The governments of the United States and Canada to be specific, who keep and publicly release information like this on a regular basis... as for Canadians "flocking" down to the United States because our system is just the best in the world... only 1 in 200 Canadians who need a medical procedure come to the US, and of them, only 1 in 4 actually left Canada and came to the US because they thought our system would provide higher quality care, in many other cases they were referred to US doctors

That is to say, the Canadian government will on occasion refer (and sometimes pay) for their citizens to go to particular US doctors/clinics/hospitals when there is actually a point to it, or Canadian doctors will recommend it for certain cosmetic procedures not covered by Canada's government (if the person has insurance or will pay themselves in the US). The statistics indicate more Americans going to Canada for prescription drugs than Canadians going to the US for treatment actually.

The Canukes are flocking to the USA on their own because it takes them months just to get a doctors appointment. This is a well known fact and accounts for the pletherra of doctors in border towns. Americans buying drugs from Canada is against federal laws in both countries so any "statistics" you have with that are either bogus or from 10 years ago.

Your "well known facts" are urban legends. Canada does have longer wait times, but not nearly to the extent that is claimed though it is a problem in Canada (and many parts of the US). As for American's buying drugs from Canada, just because its illegal doesn't mean statistics aren't kept on it, obviously, its just the methodology of collecting this information that changes.(Rather than point of sale data gather, it may take the form of a scientific poll instead)

Why would any Canadian go to the U.S. for health care? Unless they had insurance (& obviously they already have a preexisting condition) what good would it do them, unless they were rich?

Also, more and more Americans are travelling abroad for affordable operations & medical treatment.

As for wait times in Canada, Canada has had UHC since the early 50's but longer wait times for non-urgent surgeries is a more recent phenomena. Both the cause & the solutions are independent of the UHC syst.
