You need to change the stator coil to ring magnets in the mid.
Outer coils should be made of thinner copper wire, so you get higher voltage at lower speeds...
with higher voltage you can charge car batteries like 12-15v is good enough.
Atm you gain very low voltage due low rpm.
Im building my own 150w geneator i used three-phase brushless ac motor, wich i took from old water pump, used 1:20 drive with belt and i get 210v at 0,5A
at 5-15m/s winds, free enery is not really free... 200€ at least.
well in a car that is at idle it would have to be spinning at 900 rpm at the least but you need to ground the rectifier to bypass the regulator ,but little pulley on blade side same pulley on alternator see what that gets yah
You need to full field your alt. Looks like a chevy alt. If it is, there will be a D shaped hole on the back side. You will see a small metal tab in there, that needs to be grounded off. That bypasses the voltage reg in the alt
as I recall thats a continuous variable trans(CVT) in the snowmobile right? varied by centripetal force? maybe a static gear/pully train to tune/shift its range? i like it, seems like exactly what the challenge calls for. scooters are also a good source for CTV's.
Lose the alternator. It is not the way to go with this project. Instead, recycle the flywheel/stator assembly from a snowmobile or any other small engine with lighting output, mount it on a spindle/bearing assembly, and attach a very tiny pully on the outmost end of the flywheel/stator. It will produce various outputs depending on what donor parts you salvage from the dump. Super inexpensive to make and it will produce a charge that can charge a battery bank. toy with the concept. Fun++
Most auto-alternators require approximately 2000-RPM to reach 'full charge'. This is because of the average 3-to-1 pulley ratio between harmonic balancer pulley and the alternator pulley. You can do the ratio math and realize that it would take a BIG wheel on the fan-side, and a 15-mph wind, to reach 2k rpm. Best thing, is if you can find a DC motor shop and have them re-wind an alternator for you, to reach full charge at RPM...this is the 'easiest' way to do it.
You need a permanent magnet motor w/ direct drive. You loose power/wind speed with the friction of the pulley system. My first test bed was similar to this..
Need to get a high volt @ low rpm motor. I got a cheap one off ebay, $35.00 and puts out about 50 volts in a moderate wind. I think it is from a old treadmill.
Highly recommend a long out of print book on this topic: Wind And Windspinners" by Michael Hackleman. VERY meaty on all aspects of a homebuilt wind system, including how to use a car alternator with same. Your library might have a copy.
What might work is to explode a nuclear bomb at just the right distance. The EMP would provide the initial EM kick for your alternator rotor windings and the shock and winds would power the turbine. You would be the first man to make a nuclear powered turbine ... wait, not so all turbines are nuclear powered. From the Sun... but that's fusion. If you did what I said you'd be the first man to make a fission powered wind turbine so long as you did not use a hydrogen bomb.
Look for an F terminal, to energize the field. The rotor's pole pieces may not have enough residual magnetism to power the voltage regulator. If the F terminal is in a hole in the housing ("D" shaped hole typical) you short it to the housing with 12V applied through the B or + terminal and the housing of the alternator grounded to battery -. If the F terminal is an isolated stud, it may need to be connected to + or - Keep in mind that the field can draw 2-6 amps with a automotive alternator.
there was no answer given as to why it isn't charging so I'll put it here so anyone else looking will know. It will work just fine if you feed the core a little power to energize it. It probably has a built in voltage regulator and the amount of voltage you put in tells it how much to make put in less than 13v and it will make power. It should already be putting out inverted power because it has a built in rectifier.
man it sure is fun messing around and experimenting. but beleve me ive tryed with so many difrent disigns.i steal have a set of blades that i made from plastic.. all it did was eat up a hole lot of money that i could have used to just buy a turbine that's been tested and proven to give you real powere. just a friendly advice.
You can use a induction generator with adjustable rotor resistance. Then you can control the resistance of the rotor and therefore the rotanional speed of the generator. I think of it as a "electric gear system".
Of course you then have to rectify the produced electricity in order to store it to the battatries. I see that a lot of people are using dc voltage boosters in order to regulate the voltage. A PI controller is used often.
Looked like it was slipping to me . Go to wind blue power . com and check out their site it will answer alot of your questions..No gearing needed , I have seen 75 volts from mine , I like it and can't say enough about it. Direct drive with a 7' diameter blade span
I found out the hard way that a regular car alternator
just won't get it. you need one with a permanent magnet rotor otherwise you are using energy from the battery to charge the field. And without the battery you have no field.
@delraydio Think I heard you say that the blades are now 29" long (i.e. less than 6ft total rotor diameter)? Even if everything else were perfect, you couldn't get anywhere near the full power of that alternator in anything less than a gale-force wind. Your rotor must be larger. And definitely read that book I referred to in my earlier post so you have some ideas how to overcome the limitations of a car alternator in a wind generator application. Good luck!
i seen a guy on here actually use and electric motor as a generator when he would spin the motor the wires would light up a light buld

It appears that the belt is slipping on the alternator pully.

when you get more wind it'll put out power i think if not minimize the motor to a single treadmill motor with out a belt and pully

use a old time gennerator=dynamo they gennerate power from a very low RPM..you find them in cars from before the 1960...

you are going to need to replace both the stator and feild coils in addition to the increased gear ratio. I have a very similar setup.

WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE
Visit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com
ZERO-NOISE from gears and generators since they're sealed underground.
SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since the turbines are slow-moving.
DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall.
MAY BE LOWER-COST since it can use parts of junked trucks and others.
ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the blades automatically close.
HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

yea the pulley was not enough ratio. also go with as many blades as you can for a low wind generator.

are you hook to a 12 volt battery?alternator needs rpm plus battery hooked in to start regulator.you will see voltage rise if alternator is charging.

if your useing a cars altnator, you need at least 500 rpms off of a crank pully to make 14.5 volts.
you did rebuild the insides and turn in to a true generator didn't you.
PappyDan 3 years ago
you know with that size pulley on there and only .025 volts something is wrong there should be more than that with those rpms it is turning there.
