Ernest Farino, VFX Supervisor here-- "noise in space" sound effects were not used at first. Tom Hanks, big fan of "2001," was striving for accuracy, and originally the space shots were silent. But unlike "2001" where it worked as a style, in the context of this show, the sequences just went dead, to a distracting degree. Even Dave Scott agreed. So, that was one of the few conscious decisions made under the umbrella of "dramatic license." Even so, the sound FX were kept as subtle as possible.
One sentence on the Apollo missions. They were REAL.
On the series. I bought it on VHS soon after it was so badly transmitted by CH4 in the UK [thanks CH4 for making almost everyone miss it]. It was a brilliant series, but I have two criticisms. 1] There were too many smiley reactions shots. People would have just been working. And 2] oh dear, why is there external rocket noise and body moving noise in Space..? I bet Dave Scott kicked up a stink about that. But they never mentioned it here.
The Moon landings did happen, of that I have no doubt. For if the Russians believed for one second that those landings were fake they would've called us out on it. The evidence to prove that they did in fact take place is overwhelming. Also, as mpgingdl wrote, the special effects technology back then just didn't exist, & authenticated moon rocks were brought back to prove definitively that such a journey did happen. Then you've the 400,000 people that took part in that massive under-taking.
Given the state of special-effects technology in the late 60s and early 70s, how could NASA have possibly faked the moon missions? it would have been easier to fly the missions for real than to fake them.
If indeed they were fake, I'll believe it as soon as I hear it from the people who where the most intimately involved with them: the astronauts, the flight controllers, the technicians who assembled. checked out, and launched the spacecraft, the people on the tracking network, etc.
You're darn right. The moon landings were all completely fake. The Spanish government faked that landing by Columbus, too. He never landed in the western hemisphere.
Excuse me, Muslims, but your tinfoil hat is starting to slip off.
watching the intro of this video (not the From earth to the moon intro) if i had never seen from earth to the moon before i would of closed my browser but otherwise thanks for the upload
markjh2005 when you make comments "what do you expect an audience to do??? Sit in absolute silence? There's no orchestra in space playing the "The Blue Danube" Your ridiculing the messenger IMBECILE..I suggest you go back to your hole in the ground!!!!
From Earth to The Moon, and Kubricks 2001 were both made for entertainment and are not training films for NASA. Neither film is technically perfect, both have artistic licence applied to them for the sake of telling the story. However both, for their times, are extremely good representations of something extremely complex and most of all, entertaining. Narrowminded? that's rich coming from someone that wants to bitch about small things that are added to enhance the audience entertainment.
If you consider narrowminded rich, your a moron that has your brains up your ass..!When 2001 was released in 1968 it was ridiculed by critics and the public alike...WHY you ask because Kubrick pushed the envelope of storytelling ..For the viewing public to use their brains .(something you dont have) "enhance the audience entertainment" Gotta laugh at this pathetic statement.. You got no artistic integrity..wanker
I didn't ask why Kubrick was ridiculed. I don't think I said anything bad about Kubricks 2001. I enjoy the movie very much. Artistic licence is not the same as artistic integrity. Movie making is a form of art and not necessarily a science and not always exacting in detail. It is also a form of entertainment. As I said before, both films (and Apollo 13) for their times are great representations and both had a lot of work put into them. Just relax fella. sheesh....
"Its this simple yet important fact has somewhat diminished this good miniseries"..! Thats all I said dude about Tom Hanks miniseries!! To lecture about orchestra in space playing the "The Blue Danube" is childish. Beyond this, you state "Neither film is technically perfect,"You are clearly wrong.! Soviet cosmonauts as well as American astronauts whom have seen 2001 stated it is the closest any non-astronaut will experience to space travel..Not bad for a film 40 years old..!!!!!!
The reality of space flight is there is no sound in space..Why Tom Hanks forgot this fact is unknown..! Stanley Kubrick knew this for his masterpiece 2001..! Its this simple yet important fact has somewhat diminished this good miniseries..!
While what you say about sound in space is true, what do you expect an audience to do??? Sit in absolute silence? There's no orchestra in space playing the "The Blue Danube" either. Don't be such a wanker.
There is a beauty of space flight captured by Kubrick with his choice of music...! Furthermore.... Kubrick uses the silence of space as intregal part in many scenes in 2001...Dont be narrowminded....
"what do you expect an audience to do??? :" use their brains!!! This is not star wars!!! or has Tom Hanks designed this series for the star wars generation? could be!! "Sit in absolute silence" Lets see, For example The lunar landing sequence..exterior shots- silence! interior shots with Armstrong/Aldrin you would hear the rocket engine on descent,,That is realism any inteligent human being would appreciate...Nice Try.....
