  • You need to adjust the valves. They tend to get loose on motors, and adjusting the valves is part of yearly maintenance. donyboy73 has a "how to" video on this in 2 parts.

  • @NicksGarageDoor These have been gone awhile, but yeah, we did adjust the valves on them. Ended up working out quite nice!

    Thanks man

  • bad battery connection my boles does that

  • i have a snapper that has a 12hp briggs and now that i think about it i think mine does that when it starts

  • i rode a 4 wheeler that would hesitate. I think that its becuase the motors are cold. Or they are just well used:)

  • Yea that is extremely common for those engines.

the valves tend to always go out of adjustment.

    Great vid.

  • Thanks man!!

  • i think the problem is that the compression release is not working, or the valves are not adjusted right or even both, hope this helps.

  • Yeah, it turns out I just needed to adjust the valves. They both run super great now!!! Thanks man!! I appreciate it!

  • Hey Matt, my buddy had the same engine but it was a 97, turned out to be wiring issues and corrosion. Figured I would let you know on that one! Good vid man!

  • I just adjusted the valves and everything works great now!!! It was just weird that both were doing the same thing!!

  • high compression and those damn starters are the same used from the 7hp(like mine) all the way up to the 25hp vtwins hah swear to god, yeah pretty messed up why they put them damn things on such high compression engines

  • I agree.... I've had so many in the past that just ate up starters!! You have to wonder who's doing the designing!! LOL

    Thanks man!! I appreciate it!

  • nice nice cheap ass starters all that is

  • I adjusted the valves... Now both start great!!!! All it was were the valves!!

  • i would post them 4 1000 or b/o so this way if they jew u down u still make a good amount just trying to help bro hope u get them sold quick

  • Yeah, I've already got the jews... LOL! We're selling them for $550 each, or best reasonable offer. Either way, it's all 100% profit for both my buddy and I. We neither payed anything for them, or invested any money in either.

    Thanks for the comment bud!

  • COuld be, like others have said, the valve adjustment being out. Hope yo uget a good deal on them!

  • Thanks bud!! I appreciate it!

  • sweet man yeah i worked on a 18hp briggs intek ohv that had the same problem u might want to check the valve adjustment :)great deal man!!5stars

  • Yeah, there is a couple things I'm going to check on here. I'm sure I'll figure it out..

    Thanks man!! I appreciate it!

  • Hey, great video man, the cold start was a succes to ... hmm no matter how many friend you got in real life, so long they are good it is ok. Better to have not many good friends they a lot of bad friends. Anyways your a good friend of mine and I appreciate all what your doing and on your videos even if I don't understand a few things of small engines, your a amazing guy Matt and I hold of my good friends ... great video Matt

  • Thanks so much Kay... You don't have to know anything about small engines... Hell, I don't even know everything!! LOL!! I'm just a hobbiest!!

I appreciate the words bud.. I really do!!

    Thank You!!

  • Try running it...shut off the gas and run it out of gas...Then try turning it over without the gas turned back on,,,if it turns over normally gas is drooling slightly into the cylinder and partly hydrolocking it. Nice mowers and good vid as usual Matt!

  • Niether one have shut off valves... I wonder if that may be the reason, eh? I'll have to check into that today!! Thanks Bob... I appreciate it man!

  • Hope ya make a good profit buddy

  • Anything over free is total profit man!! Thanks bud!

  • My YARDMAN has started like that since it was new. it has the 20hp v-twin kohler. the ONLY time it has turned over like it should is when I had a high output charger/jump starter hooked to it and turned up to full power. I too am looking for a solution to this problem. I replaced the battery this past summer. helped a little, not much though.

  • I don't know how long this has been doing this, but it's been long enough!! LOL!! I'm going to put a charge on the batteries today and see what happens!!

    Thanks man!

  • Batteries are not strong enough. Try hooking jumper cables up to them from your pickup battery and try it. Bet it will turn over like it should then. Just try it.

  • Yeah, thats kinda what I was thinking too, but I'm going to check the valves this morning... We'll see what the deal is with that!! LOL

  • np buddy awesome hope you make a good profit

  • Yeah, when these engines start, they run GREAT!!!!! It's just a matter of getting them to start!! LOL

  • we have a dlt 3000 with a vtwin 20hp i think just needs a wire harness and a ignition switch but the motor out of that scotts project mower i have locks up like that which is a a briggs like that but the older model ohv which i did the head gasket on and gets gas in the oil

  • There is no gas in the oil.... I think it's either a weak battery, or it's a valve adjustment.... Either way, I'll have to check into it tomorrow

  • @mbyr31 i used a jump starter with mine i need a starter for the motor and a new welder since the wire fed got stolen so i can make the exhaust im doing a stack with straight pipe

  • Yeah..... It's not really all that important anyways!!! Thanks though Wolf!!

  • Valve adjustment...very common.. Pressure relieve

  • my john deere L110 with a 17.5hp kohler has done the same thing since new, best thing i can come up with is the starters arnt powerful enough. the old K series kohlers in my cub cadets use a starter/generator, a much better setup. they have no lag like these new ones do on compression, plus they have compression release. none of the new ones are made to that kind of quality

  • It's probably just a valve adjustment.. I'm not concerned though. We may already have one sold!! LOL!!! "as is"!!!!!

  • sold already? sweet lol

  • Got a woman and her husband coming to look at it tomorrow!!! They may actually buy both!

  • cool deal, i need to start stripping a tractor i have for parts, i just need to find people to buy the crap lol

  • Post it on Ebay.... Parts go quickly on Ebay!!!

  • ive been thinking of that, but all the pieces are either big or rediculessly heavy. its not bad shape, electrical burned all up on it and my other one just like it needed some little things. for the right price i will let it go less a few more things. im not going to let the hydro-transaxle go though, i might get crazy and make a tandem axle with my matching one lol

  • oh yea one more thing can i see a warm start........

  • Hell yeah!!! GREAT IDEA!!!! LOL

  • you shuld just post videos all day long one day just cuz you can or could if you wanted to or......not really......or perhaps or i dunno.....

  • I would get sick of them and then stop posting for weeks!!! LOL!

  • Hey guys , my 87 Roper dosent turn like that , off course with new starter and Batt , but it never did that so Im thinking its tha vavles .Boy there going cheap Love to buy the two of them where are you Matt ...

  • I'm in Wisconsin... They both run great, when they start!!! Starting them is the most difficult!!! LOL!!

  • valves need adjusting. i have had mowers come in 4 repair doing the same thing.

  • Yup.... Thats what I've been told!!! LOL...

Thanks bud.. I appreciate it man!

  • nice, glad to see you've got some more profit oppurtunities coming in man! hope all goes well and you get full price for them.

  • Thanks bud... I appreciate it!!

  • yeah buddy it is your valves they are out of adjustment my cousin lawnmower59 has an 04 17.5hp briggs ohv it used to do that but would barely crank even jumping it off a diesel battery new battery in the tractor as well lt1000 but after i adjusted his valves the mower turns over like brand new but over time it goes back out of adjustment there supposed to be adjusted every one to two seasons or every year most people don't ever get them adjusted so over time it gets worse hope it helps peace

  • Yeah, I don't think these have ever been adjusted.... LOL!!!! Selling "as is"!! LOL.

If we were going to keep them and use them, absolutely I would adjust the valves. But, they are being sold!!

    Thanks man!!

  • Hey,maybe such a good friend should give all profit to you.Your doing most of the work lol

  • Nope.... Thats now how this fat man rolls!!! LOL!!! You know how I am!! :)

  • the amps on the batts are probly too low try puting a batt with more amps i had a mower that did that same thing or the rockers are not pushing on the valves enuf not letting the compreshon out at the right time but it will still run i hope that helps =)

  • Whats funny is if you charge the batteries, and put the boost on, it spins it no problem. I'm thinking it was a battery issue, but it just seems strange that both tractors have the same exact problem!!

Thanks man.. Every bit helps... These are going to be sold anyways... AS IS!!!! LOL

  • do thay both have the same batt or close to the same amps??? PS. atleast you know how to fix it in the fucher =)

  • One battery is now dead from us trying to start it. Other is almost new! I think it's the valves... Not sure!!

  • could be one or the other or both hoo told you that tthay are new batts??

  • The tractor on the trailer has the original battery. The other one is a newer battery installed in what I belive is '08. The starter in the one off the trailer was installed prior to last year..... From what I belive.

I just think it boils down to the valves being out of adjustment, and I'm going to check them out tomorrow morning. It's not like it matters much, because they are going to be sold, but I still want to be sure I'm not selling something to someone without making sure it's right.

  • i know how you feel on selling somthing and i totally agree =)

  • i have the same problem with my little green crapsman. yes thats right, crapsman. i have no clue what does it either.

  • I think it's just the batteries!!! Or could be the valves... not 100% sure!

  • The rocker arms might be too loose. Try adjusting them to 3-6 thousandths. I know if they get too loose it gets really hard to turn them over.

  • Yeah.... Like I just told propanemower13, If we were going to keep them, it would be one story... I may go out and take a look at them, but it's just odd that both tractors have the same exact problem. We're selling them "as is" anyways... Let the next person deal with them!! LOL

  • @mbyr31 they usually need adjusted once a year depending how much they are run....lol

  • you know that might be caused by the rockers are to loose and you have to measure them by bringing the engine to tdc then you adjust the valves from 3-6 thousanths

  • Yeah... Thats what I was thinking.... I'm not too concerned about it. We're selling them as is.... Let the next person play with it!! LOL!

  • bout time you did a coldstart man your giving people Aneurysms jk man... Awesome 5*

  • Yeah, well, this wasn't meant to be a "cold start" it just turned out that way!! LOL!!

    Thanks man!

  • a cold start what the fuck?lol..sounds like you got good freinds bud.awsome.

  • LOL!! I have fantastic friends!! Wait till you see tomorrows "cold start"!!! LMAO!!

  • Somethin is tellin me that those batteries ain't new, they didn't look new. My old tractor had that same prob and all I had to do is jump the battery to the starter and crank it that way.

  • Wow dude....... I just put this vid up about an hour ago and its saying you commented 6 HOURS AGO!!!! What a great psycic, eh?? LMAO!!! Gotta love the YouTube!!!

I think the valves are out of adjustment, AND the batteries need charging. I just though it was odd that the same kind of problem was happening on both. I was more curious whether this was a typical craftsman problem or not!!

Thanks much man!! I appreciate it!

  • Holy smoke, its sayin the same thing here. WTF??!

  • yep. ur welcome Matt!
