You need to adjust the valves. They tend to get loose on motors, and adjusting the valves is part of yearly maintenance. donyboy73 has a "how to" video on this in 2 parts.
Hey Matt, my buddy had the same engine but it was a 97, turned out to be wiring issues and corrosion. Figured I would let you know on that one! Good vid man!
high compression and those damn starters are the same used from the 7hp(like mine) all the way up to the 25hp vtwins hah swear to god, yeah pretty messed up why they put them damn things on such high compression engines
Yeah, I've already got the jews... LOL! We're selling them for $550 each, or best reasonable offer. Either way, it's all 100% profit for both my buddy and I. We neither payed anything for them, or invested any money in either.
Hey, great video man, the cold start was a succes to ... hmm no matter how many friend you got in real life, so long they are good it is ok. Better to have not many good friends they a lot of bad friends. Anyways your a good friend of mine and I appreciate all what your doing and on your videos even if I don't understand a few things of small engines, your a amazing guy Matt and I hold of my good friends ... great video Matt
Try running it...shut off the gas and run it out of gas...Then try turning it over without the gas turned back on,,,if it turns over normally gas is drooling slightly into the cylinder and partly hydrolocking it. Nice mowers and good vid as usual Matt!
My YARDMAN has started like that since it was new. it has the 20hp v-twin kohler. the ONLY time it has turned over like it should is when I had a high output charger/jump starter hooked to it and turned up to full power. I too am looking for a solution to this problem. I replaced the battery this past summer. helped a little, not much though.
I don't know how long this has been doing this, but it's been long enough!! LOL!! I'm going to put a charge on the batteries today and see what happens!!
Batteries are not strong enough. Try hooking jumper cables up to them from your pickup battery and try it. Bet it will turn over like it should then. Just try it.
we have a dlt 3000 with a vtwin 20hp i think just needs a wire harness and a ignition switch but the motor out of that scotts project mower i have locks up like that which is a a briggs like that but the older model ohv which i did the head gasket on and gets gas in the oil
@mbyr31 i used a jump starter with mine i need a starter for the motor and a new welder since the wire fed got stolen so i can make the exhaust im doing a stack with straight pipe
my john deere L110 with a 17.5hp kohler has done the same thing since new, best thing i can come up with is the starters arnt powerful enough. the old K series kohlers in my cub cadets use a starter/generator, a much better setup. they have no lag like these new ones do on compression, plus they have compression release. none of the new ones are made to that kind of quality
ive been thinking of that, but all the pieces are either big or rediculessly heavy. its not bad shape, electrical burned all up on it and my other one just like it needed some little things. for the right price i will let it go less a few more things. im not going to let the hydro-transaxle go though, i might get crazy and make a tandem axle with my matching one lol
Hey guys , my 87 Roper dosent turn like that , off course with new starter and Batt , but it never did that so Im thinking its tha vavles .Boy there going cheap Love to buy the two of them where are you Matt ...
yeah buddy it is your valves they are out of adjustment my cousin lawnmower59 has an 04 17.5hp briggs ohv it used to do that but would barely crank even jumping it off a diesel battery new battery in the tractor as well lt1000 but after i adjusted his valves the mower turns over like brand new but over time it goes back out of adjustment there supposed to be adjusted every one to two seasons or every year most people don't ever get them adjusted so over time it gets worse hope it helps peace
the amps on the batts are probly too low try puting a batt with more amps i had a mower that did that same thing or the rockers are not pushing on the valves enuf not letting the compreshon out at the right time but it will still run i hope that helps =)
Whats funny is if you charge the batteries, and put the boost on, it spins it no problem. I'm thinking it was a battery issue, but it just seems strange that both tractors have the same exact problem!!
Thanks man.. Every bit helps... These are going to be sold anyways... AS IS!!!! LOL
The tractor on the trailer has the original battery. The other one is a newer battery installed in what I belive is '08. The starter in the one off the trailer was installed prior to last year..... From what I belive.
I just think it boils down to the valves being out of adjustment, and I'm going to check them out tomorrow morning. It's not like it matters much, because they are going to be sold, but I still want to be sure I'm not selling something to someone without making sure it's right.
Yeah.... Like I just told propanemower13, If we were going to keep them, it would be one story... I may go out and take a look at them, but it's just odd that both tractors have the same exact problem. We're selling them "as is" anyways... Let the next person deal with them!! LOL
you know that might be caused by the rockers are to loose and you have to measure them by bringing the engine to tdc then you adjust the valves from 3-6 thousanths
Somethin is tellin me that those batteries ain't new, they didn't look new. My old tractor had that same prob and all I had to do is jump the battery to the starter and crank it that way.
Wow dude....... I just put this vid up about an hour ago and its saying you commented 6 HOURS AGO!!!! What a great psycic, eh?? LMAO!!! Gotta love the YouTube!!!
I think the valves are out of adjustment, AND the batteries need charging. I just though it was odd that the same kind of problem was happening on both. I was more curious whether this was a typical craftsman problem or not!!
You need to adjust the valves. They tend to get loose on motors, and adjusting the valves is part of yearly maintenance. donyboy73 has a "how to" video on this in 2 parts.

i rode a 4 wheeler that would hesitate. I think that its becuase the motors are cold. Or they are just well used:)
stydel311 1 year ago
Yea that is extremely common for those engines.
the valves tend to always go out of adjustment.
Great vid.

i think the problem is that the compression release is not working, or the valves are not adjusted right or even both, hope this helps.

Yeah, it turns out I just needed to adjust the valves. They both run super great now!!! Thanks man!! I appreciate it!

robert30319 2 years ago
There is no gas in the oil.... I think it's either a weak battery, or it's a valve adjustment.... Either way, I'll have to check into it tomorrow

The rocker arms might be too loose. Try adjusting them to 3-6 thousandths. I know if they get too loose it gets really hard to turn them over.
