Some feel by devaluing others, it inflates their own value. In this person's case, they achieved the exact opposite.

Re: falling sets - my closest friend, who eventually became a director, was acting in a play when the set came down around her. She kept it together, because the show must go on, and she got a huge ovation at the end. So, even if everything falls apart, it'll be ok. Break a leg, hon!

Best opening night fuckup I know of: director friend's in Montreal leading man arrested for very major credit card fraud a few hours before curtain up. (Later convicted, then deported to US.) Friend had to step in himself, still got huzzahs. Beginning of his more serious acting career!

LOL!! you are exactly right... I think I was confusing it with a "just for theatre" meaning that I don't know anything about TV or film. I find theatre is so different than TV and Film that its hard to compare the two... both have really good productions and both can have bad ones. but yes. the live feeling to it does give it a little more intimate feel that I love.

I also faced a similar decision to you about the theatre when I was a lot younger. I gave up a career in theatre and television for a more "profitable" career. What I gained was comfort. What I lost was colour. Too afraid to dare to think too much about whether I made the "right" choice or not....

Back in Australia, instead of "break a leg", we would have said "Chookas", so Chookas! Hals und Beinbruch! Fall down backwards!

yes. sooo true. making the sacrifice of money for loving your job... habit... career... is well worth it in the long run. After my decision, I have never looked back and regret nothing. I've been very lucky.
