My heart is singing because its May My cares go winging and fly away For spring came swinging along Bringing a song today The breeze that lingers upon his way To watch a sunbeam at play Composes a love song to the roses A love song that my heart is singing today On a wings of a song let me fly away Where woodland voices are calling Leaving all my cares behind me Never more to find me while I tell the world this is May
Thanks, texaoperastar, for all these postings and the website DEANNA DURBIN DEVOTEES. I put it on my FAVORITES,along with Dawn Upshaw, Jennifer Larmore,Miliza Korjus and the great gospel singer, George Bevery Shea, who will be 100 years old in February. I'm also in love with Frederica Von Stade, whom I've met, Carol Vaness, who I'd love to meet, Jerry Hadley and many others. What if Deanna had decided to sing at the Met when they asked her at age 15? Career unlimited. But we'll never know.
Gosh! What a voice! What a talent! I just really discovered Deanna Durbin about a month ago and I'm still not over it. I just fell in love with her voice and her screen presence and I just can't get enough of her. I would have loved to have seen her on stage doing opera ,recitals, singing with some of the great tenors ofher day. Deanna could have done anything she set her mind and heart to. The world is poorer for her early retirement from singing. I wish she hadn;t, but she did. Bravura, Diva.
What started out as a "B" grade production turned into one excellent movie thanks to the amazing Deanna and her talented director. Notice when Penny dives off the boat she is wearing shoes, but the next camera shot shows her swimming without shoes.
contract player, grew so excited as the time came for her to do her first scene in her
first movie that her vocal cords paralyzed and the child couldn't say a word when she faced the camera. Nothing the studio nurse could do seemed to help. The scene in the
Universal film "Three Smart Girls" had to be postponed. The condition passed away during the evening."
True. In the sequel, Kay is played by Helen Parrish. The published reason given was that, after THREE SMART GIRLS Barbara Read had appeared in some "mature" roles and was no longer considered an appropriate choice to reprise her role as the demure Kay. But who knows? I've often wondered if Read was related to Deanna. Like Deanna, Barbara was from Canada and Deanna's mother's maiden name was "Read."
Agreed. She's lovely to look at and to listen to, and a gifted young actress to boot. Don't know where that came from. Unlike most of her contemporaries (e.g., Garland, Rooney, Temple) Deanna wasn't a "professional kid" with years of prior performing experience before she entered the movies, but she's utterly natural and unaffected onscreen. A truly remarkable and inimitable talent, as the other studios discovered when they sought their own "Deanna Durbin."
THREE SMART GIRLS GROW UP is delightful, one of the better Hollywood sequels. Critic/writer (e.g., THE THIRD MAN) Graham Greene, who was one of the small minority not delighted by Deanna's debut performance in THREE SMART GIRLS, wrote of her performance in TSGGU: "There can be no doubt any longer of Miss Durbin's immense talents as an actress, and undertones there are in this witty, astute and sentimental tale are provided by her." I hope you get to see more of Deanna's movies.
In real life, Helen Parrish was one of Deanna's best friends. Helen was also a bridesmaid when Deanna got married to Vaughn Paul in 1941. BTW, as a very little girl, Helen worked with Judy Garland modelling children's dresses.
Thanks - I'm the administrator for the non-profit web site: DEANNA DURBIN DEVOTEES. I'm absolutely mad about anything Deanna and loving every minute of it.
By all accounts, the uber-competitive Judy Garland had conniptions when Deanna Durbin quickly became a major Universal star in 1937 with this film. Even after Judy became a star, she loathed Durbin, mocking her singing, eyebrows, and her arm which had been broken as a child, and not perfectly repaired.
I love Deanna's voice. I first saw this movie 15+ years ago; The above segment rolled onto my TV screen and I was instantly entranced by her sound. This little girl with just a couple of years of professional coaching completely overwhelmed me. I've since listened and learned but found no other singer to match her golden tone.
Big DD fan here. I was also a child prodigy musician, won plenty of competitions and soloed with several orchestras as a teen, plus I've been teaching music for nearly 20 years. DD, quite simply, is in a completely different league from me and anyone else I've heard. At 14 she already had the makings of an operatic superstar - just listen to that note at 2:25! At 15, she was getting invitations from the Metropolitan Opera!
Really not impressed with this style of singing - or any of the music that stunk up most of the 30s movies. But I like the singer - at least when she's singing opera and not schmaltz.
