I don't see how you can give this album a 5/10, citing characterless vocals and lack of experimentation as reasons for the low score, then give Holy Ghost!'s album an 8, especially considering they are both the same dance-pop-type records. Don't get me wrong, I did like many of the songs on HG's album, and I know it's 'just opinions' etc, but at least be consistent, or it just looks like selective judgement, rather than objective.
Cut copy Zonoscope holy crap, uhhhh, hi everyone, Anthony Phantano, here the internets busiest music nerd. Now I admit i dont know anything about music but i feel that i have to put my stupid face on the internet anyways. I recently realized that im a douche bag and I have decided to not be a douche bag anymore. Zonoscope was great. 10/10
I hated it when streaming it through Twitter but I listened to it a few more times in hopes that something, anything would grow on me about it. Unfortunately nothing did. Looks like I'll have to listen to In Ghost Colours and Bright like Neon Love and hope they go back to their Daft Punkish roots. If they don't then I guess I'll have to call it now:
Ah, first Crystal Castles, now this: Mr Fantano, yet again you've cut me to the Core! This was a very solid review in its teasing out of Cut Copy's situation in relation to their influences and sounds, and the not to the "physicality" of some tracks, but a 5? Could it perhaps be that your trotting through the snow, braving the cold, and a summery Australian synth-pop album feels Indecent? Surely songs like "Pharoahs & Pyramids", "Corner of the Sky" and "Need You Now" warrant higher, structurally
Personally, I'm not bothered about influences and all that when it comes to an album like this. What matters for me is the tunes, and there are loads of great ones here. Need You Now is the best song they've ever done, and Pharaohs & Pyramids is also fantastic. In fact the whole first half of the album is brilliant. Second half takes a few plays to get into (apart from the awesome Sun God) but there's nothing 'bad' here. After IGC I half-expected Zonoscope to be a let down, but I totally love it
Zonoscope is a fantastic album, how could you give it a 5 out of 10. The album is very psycadelic and treads some new ground that Cut Copy have not explored before. The best track on the album is Pharohs & Pyramids, which sounds like a Middle Eastern inspired Rave!!!
@simomacca12 I don't think CC go out and explore that much, though I do think they've refined their sound. I agree that Pharaohs & Pyramids is the best track (that percolating beat is musical gold). Most of all , I think 5 out of 10 is ultra-way too harsh. I'd give it a 7.5/10 at the very least.
I thought the starfucker album was pretty decent, reminds me alittle of passion pit or perhaps a really zaney radio dept ...just not as good as either, i can't see it occupying me much longer (people who haven't heard of The radio Dept... they're amazing!)
just because something isn't experimental does NOT make it bad. i gave it a listen, it's very catchy, very nice, clean, polite and shiny.
Cut Copy is not a disgrace or pisspoor. i think right now Cut Copy is just at the wrong place at the wrong time. There's TOO many 80's revival bands so the sound starts to get monotonous when you hear it a lot, but take one alone at a time and you start to see the signatures.
Any chance of reviewing The Meads Of Asphodal - "The Murder Of Jesus The Jew"? It was released around November last year. It is one of the most bonkers albums I have heard in along time. Check it out. I'd be really curious to hear your thoughts on it.
@arabianzeppelin disgrace?? ohh, that's a little harsh. i think shane warne is disgracing us a little more horrendously at the moment. I live right near him & Ch 7 are camped out on the nature strip. How embarrassing.
I think you should review Gypsy & The Cat and their album Gilgamesh. It's another synth-pop duo with nice vocalization. So far this year, it has been one of my favorite albums.
I have to really disagree here. Even with so many bands going with the synth-pop direction, I think Cut Copy manages to take this album one step further than "In Ghost Colours". If you look at their progression they seem to have taken what they're good at and just made it crisper, cleaner and catchier. It may be a cop out to just stick with what's hot, but in this style, it either comes off cheesy or well constructed. I think Cut Copy remains the perfect architect for how to do it well.
Cut Copy didn't impress me that much, but Starfucker's new album did. My biggest complaint about Reptilians is that "Born", the first track on the album, sounds like it almost shouldn't be there, at least not as the first song. I love that heavy bass on "Julius" and just the general sound of "Bury Us Alive", even if it does get a bit repetitive.
This guy's remind me very much of Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears & all those 80's alternative band's that there inspired by. And i think it's cool there keeping those sound's and music like that alive
horrible review. I respect your opinion but giving this album only a few spins does not suffice. This album needs multiple listens to fully appreciate it.
