  • First i ws like :| Then like :\ Then Like :L Then like :O Then Like :] Then Like "Im Jelous"

  • i feel bad for anyone who invested in this venture.

  • @mcsilvio Elaborate please?

  • @lookslikeharry2 : I can't help but feel that this product has missed its window of opportunity in the market. I'm seeing cheap devices that are smaller and more dedicated. I'm thinking of the Dingoo for gaming and the OQO model 02 as a pc.

  • @mcsilvio I actually haven't heard of the OQO model 02. Holy balls it's expensive!

  • But what I really dislike about the product are the gaming controls. Having owned, PSP's, GBs, and DSs, I can attest to the fact that poor control design can reduce the product's popularity drastically. And in my opinion the ones found here are not near ideal. So while it looks like it does a great many things, I am finding better, more dedicated devices for cheaper. This product reminds me of a netbook with gaming controls, only JUST coming out, and with more limitations.

  • @mcsilvio That's a great point of view, I myself passed on the Pandora (because of the epicly long production time and cost) for a Caanoo. It's awesome, and while it doesn't emulate quite as many systems as the Pandora, it's making great progress, with nearly full Sega Genesis support already, which was the major selling point for me. I might get a Pandora in the future but for now I'll stick with my Caanoo.

  • How much for one of these?

  • can it run crysis full settings?

  • @butwhydudeimeanwhy12

Yes definitely, it can even multi-task and run crysis one and two at the same time.

  • i love pandora :D

  • where can i buy one of theses pandoras?

  • please tell me when it can run psp games

  • @retroman51

Do so if you are into retro and such :P

I wrote a HUGE answer b4 but youtube ate it, sorry ^^

The Pandora isn't made for DS-Emulation and such.

I'm not familiar with Linux but the Pandora simply looks interesting.

Plus I am helping a community project, which is great by itself.

I have a PSP, want to buy the 3DS and still haven't cancelled my Pandora order.

For watching videos, surfing the web, playing games on the go, there is nothing better yet.

    Uuh, call me Fanboy...^^ :D :D :D

  • @Kheldim

A laptop is probably better for watching videos, surfing the web, playing games on the go ;]

  • completely useless with the 3ds coming out now.

  • @geroth22

    hmm...

    nope lol.

Pandora was never a console which was made in order to mess with consoles like psp or DS.

You didn't get it, did you? The purpose the pandora is made and used for is completely different..

  • whats a pandora

  • That's one behemoth. Or a very small netbook.

  • Сложно назвать это игровой консолью... обычный нетбук...

  • @N20PROI Только Нетбук в 200 раз больше.

  • a laptop does not have analog sticks

  • how much do it cost

  • Comment removed

  • What song by Pet Shop Boys is this?

  • what a useless thing just buy a laptop its still portable -__-

  • @dalester23

    A laptop isn't handheld.

This things basically a DS, with more power, and a keyboard.

  • @LlamaZruleZ umsss DS use ARM at 33mhz pandora processor is a 600mhz is more more more power, pandora is more power whit psp...

Ummss DS usa un ARM a 33mhz el procesador de padonra es a 600mhz, es muchisimo mas potente, es mas potente incluso que psp...

  • @dalester23 A laptop would require you to carry a ton of shit around all the time and wouldn't exactly be very portable in terms of gaming. For instance you could not play it standing up to well. =/

  • wtf is tht thing?

  • should i buy this?i have a hacked psp already

  • @xkrazyways

    lol yeap.

Keep the PSP for homebrew and such though..^^

  • I am waiting on full java and flash support, so I can play runescape and watch youtube on the Go. I won't really use this much for games, but I defintiyl will use it to take all of my files with me everywere

(I fix computers for a living so having a convenient way to have all my programs with me and the ability to file customer information without having to pull out a laptop would be a life saver.

  • @ACEDcomputers - There will be probably be some workaround for YouTube, like an external application. Since Adobe are insane, I don't think we can count on an official Flash release for it, ever.

I can't remember exactly how Java support is going, but someone on the gp32x forums might know.

  • @cyborgtroy I think flash works well....

  • @KrisDouglasTube - Flash works okay on x86 CPUs. It even works acceptably on Linux.

But the Pandora has an ARM CPU.

So right now, there isn't an official version of Flash that will work on the Pandora.

There are other ways to watch Flash video, and there's a few open-source projects trying to reverse-engineer Flash cartoons, but right now there is not an official Flash for Pandora.

  • can these go on the internet too?

  • @lambofgod1638 - Yes, it will ship with Midori, a WebKit-based Internet browser. Java and Flash might not work immediately, but top scientists are working on it.

  • Aw so we won't be able to get it in white? But it looks so cool...

  • even a mobile phone can run quake nowadays, not to mention the awkward control scheme

  • @ Connor8001 - Nothing too crazy? This thing runs everything PS1 and back. It may even run Dreamcast and Doom 3. If a handheld that fits in your pocket can play that much and hold them all at once isn't amazing, I don't know what is...

  • So, the most powerful handheld console soon to be on the market...

Anyone developing a PSP emulator for it? Can it be done, or would it be a bit too much?

Looks mighty neat, I might just have to get one when it comes out. Like Nagoya1999 said, it's astounding how you have have what is essentially a fully powered linux-based PC right in your pocket - the specs on this thing are better than my first PC in 2000, a Compaq with a 300MHz PII or III. Wow.

  • I don't know exactly how JPCSP weasels its way around, but i don't see it co-emulating 2 processors at the same time, which is good news, because if this was necessary, attempts to do something like that on Pandora would be futile.

To make it short, it seems to be vaguely possible, but i doubt anyone would do it, and if they do, it will take years.

And there is a reason you shouldn't expect a good Saturn emulator, but Dreamcast is likely.

  • @kenan6346 - There is a PSP emulator in development, but I don't think it works, and probably never will.

  • @cyborgtroy

tell me what the pandora needs a fully working psp emu for?

I mean, a psp is around 50 bucks, anyone can afford that...

  • @Kheldim - It doesn't need it, it's just something that jayfoxrox is working on.

I'm getting a Pandora someday anyway, so a PSP emu would save me $50 + cost of PSP games + pocket space, if I really wanted to play PSP games.

  • So, what exactly is this?

  • Essentially a computer that was intended to run all of your favourite game emulators (NES, SNES, PSX, Genesis, Saturn... etc.) Notthing crazy though.

  • were can i buy this?

  • How did you get it?

  • Cool

  • Comment removed

  • Hmm, I don't suppose Pandora is some sort of an actually "funded" project? I think the concept of pandora is REALLY REALLY GREAT, like... awesome, and it should really get some more publicity, maybe some sponsors?

The design is good, but.. I think it could look a little more sleaker... a little more smoother =P...

I'm amazed they can stuff a linux-enabled device in your pocket these days..

  • @Nagoya1999: It's funded by pre-orders and the investment of the guys who own the company.

They don't want to get sponsors or take debt, they say it's too risky.

  • @Nagoya1999 Just proves that *nux i better than windows, I guess.

  • @Nagoya1999

    check today's design

  • @Nagoya1999 android

  • @satu581 android is linux-enabled itself

  • @Nagoya1999 they dont want sponsors because that might destroy its open-source meaning.

  • @Nagoya1999 is the pandora touchscreen capable?

  • wow

  • I like the idea of the pandora, but the design is, frankly, horrible. When compared to something like the Dingoo, it's the looks that clinch it for me. If you could fit a pandora in a Dingoo case, I'd be a happy Trilbymonkey :)

  • Real cool toy. Release date?

  • soon...

  • will this have wi/fi when it does come out? Also, Will it be sold in north america?

  • @retroman51

    yeap.

    both

  • @Kheldim kthx, and should I buy it? 'Cause i have a Acekard2i and my DS lite.

  • I wonder when this thing will be finished, and if we may see a potential WINE

    It's taking forever :(

  • Maybe I should get this instead of my OQO Model 02... is it good for PC games? Or can it run Windows XP?

  • @demon69120 , no it cannot run WinXP. It is a Linux netbook. No, you can't use WINE to run XP applications either. Look at the main website for more info.

  • Aww. I was looking to use this as a widows tablet since it is setup more like a gaming system.

  • Actually it's pocket-sized, so I wouldn't call it a netbook, but it uses ARM CPU architecture, not x86, so Windows won't run on it, and neither will WINE.

  • Ohh that makes sense, I was wondering why no tablets with arms had linux. No idea Linux has different architecture.

  • What?

    No, no, it's like this:

    Normal computers have x86 CPUs.

Pandora and other devices have ARM CPUs.

    Windows only runs on x86

Linux runs on x86 or ARM, but WINE (Windows compatibility) can only work on x86 Linux.

  • no windows. its arm based so nothing that runns on a x86 platform will work unless it is open source and ported over

  • Ahh yeah gotcha. Someone explained that to me earlier, Linux will run on x64 x86 and ARM structures, but Windows will only run on x64 and x86 CPUs. Well, I guess I don't need this then, since I have a PSP and an iPod Touch!

  • the pandora will have more functionality than those 2 gadgets, but if your gonna get a netbook its a mute point

  • @demon69120: It will play movies and music and whatnot, but all the big closed-source applications like Adobe Flash and iTunes aren't happening.

  • Wow.... ill love to own one of these.

  • I would like to see ubuntu instead of plain old Linux

  • There is an ARM version of Ubuntu, but Angstrom is already specialized for the OMAP 3430 or 3530 or whatever so it will be way better for hardware support.

  • hahahahahahaa, noob

  • Plain Linux has an ugly GUI

  • Plain Linux doesn't have any GUI?

  • @paldepind it does, thats why it has a desktop and a nav bar at the top, I just don't like how it looks.

  • Plain Linux doesn't have a desktop..

  • theres no such thing as "plain" linux...

  • Yes there is, but it's nothing but a kernel..

  • Linux with a GUI is GNU/Linux. So Linux its self is basically a text based terminal.

  • Yeah... Actually, aren't some of the console tools GNU? gcc for instance, to compile things.

I can't remember what GUI Angstrom Linux is using here, I think it was Matchbox.

They're planning to ship with xfce, so if you've ever seen Xubuntu, it'll be like that.

  • horrible music

  • please u do better then and post it.

  • With all do respect, let people have opinions and critique even if it differs from your own. People don't need to be able to build something themselves to have a taste in looks.

I'm dying for this to come out in mass production to get one of my own. but I hate the whole fanboy-ism on youtube where people always block out messages that don't agree with their points of view.

  • its the prototype you buttwipe

  • Can we install other OS's on it? Like Windows 98 , Linux Ubuntu ?

  • Other OSes, yes, Windows on the whole is a no go, although strictly speaking possible, I don't see it being fast at all, as the Pandora is ARM, windows is X86, and every thing has to go through an interpreter.

  • Godlike is right. Windows and Mac OS will NOT run natively, so they are basically useless for anything practical.

However, many LInux distributions have ARM ports, so Ubuntu, Gentoo, probably Debian should all work.

  • Well , that's good news , but when I said Windows , I was thinking about DOS. Can the pandora run DOS games ?

  • Uh it can run some of them through DOSbox..

  • Not 98, since that's for x86 CPUs.

  • you can, but nothing windows. it only has an arm processor.

  • Well, fortunately the Pandora will be able to run N64 games and even potentially run Dreamcast games. Rest assured. It's sad that you suckers won't get one 'til 2010 if you don't get one now...

  • N64 games run fast on my girlfriend's $300 dollar netbook that is smaller than all the paper notebooks I own (and netbooks will only get faster and cheaper, folks). If the Pandora can't handle N64 games without a hitch and be really cheap, I don't see the point.

  • It depends on what you're looking for. I want a Pandora because it will fit in my pocket and the battery lasts around 12 hours, about 6 times longer than my desktop replacement's battery.

But if you want any sort of power, get a netbook. Or a notebook.

  • That machine is a BEAST!

  • So can this run N64 games?

  • They're working on an N64 emulator, but it's pretty slow at the moment and doesn't work with all games.

So: No, but it might in the future.

  • Thanks!!

  • There is pretty much no point in Pandora anymore. They waited too long to release and the whole landscape of devices (closed and open source) are passing them by.

Why buy this when you could get a dingo or wiz or a nokia n900 and a bluetooth controller?

  • Because the Wiz doesn't have a keyboard and the N900 has a small one that looks hard to type on.

  • As a man with large hands the GP"X Wiz is just too small to comfortably play, so I am hoping the pandora will be big enough to let me play some retro classics.

  • This looks fantastic! I've wanted a PSP so I could mod my favorite games onto it, but it seems this system is designed around that very principle!

How would games be distributed for this console? Do you have to download games to it, or can I buy a Pandora version of Quake? In any case, I don't mind playing OpenArena on this sucker when I can buy it!

  • The games are distributed however the author wants to.

You can load games from an SD card, over a network connection, flash drive, etc.

The most likely setup for free games will be downloading from the Internet onto an SD card.

Commercial games might be sold on their own SD card.

  • Interesting. So there isn't any way to make money off developing games for this system? Then again, I suppose there can be a "Pay to download" system, although I speculate everyone would only play emulators and other games they already have (Hell, that's what I would do).

Anyway, I asked about games because I thought the giant rectangular thing on the bottom of the device was the game. In retrospect, it's the battery, yeah?

Man, I wish I had the cash to get one of these things

  • Oh god no, that's the battery. XD

The games come on SD cards, Secure Digital, look it up.

You can sell the games on an SD card, but there's always a chance that someone will rip it somehow.

Or "pay to download" and hope that people don't share download links, I think World Of Goo does this.

  • Yeah dude, I was gonna say. I thought NES games were huge. No, I should have thought it through before asking :P

It's a good system to use. Then again, I like this system because if I were to buy one of these things, I can play a lot of games I already own, instead of having to re-buy them (Like on XBOX live, which I gladly do)

  • Also, is this gonna be for sale in retail stores, or will I have to buy one online? I will buy it online, if I must, but going to a store is so much quicker

  • Currently it's only available for pre-order online, but in a year or two there might be a few stores that sell this, it's hard to say yet.

  • Sweet! Be sure to make an announcement if you sell these suckers in Ohio. That'll be an awesome day for me :D

  • "in a year or two" ? by that time my wrist-watch will have the same power and capabilities of the Pandora :P

  • Yes but the Pandora has a full QWERTY keyboard and a 4 (or 3 or 5, I can't recall) inch screen.

  • When is this thing supposed to come out? I haven't heard from it in awhile.

  • looks great, but its a terrible video

  • Does the Pandora got triggers buttons R&L? And a usb port for usb drives&co? Thx for reply

  • Yes, there is one L and one R button, and a USB port that will work with USB 2 devices but not USB 1 devices.

If you need USB 1 devices or multiple USB devices, you can use a USB 2 hub...

  • Well the biggest difference between the pandora and other consoles is that it runs linux and so basically is a laptop with an ARM processor, it also doesn't need homebrew "enabled" you can run whatever you want on it, of course, as long as it is compiled for the pandora and isnt X86.

  • Yeah, but the big advantage of the ARM is that there is support for C/C++ compiler, making it very easy to port to it.

  • I already have a ds lite, what is the biggest difference between the pandora and other portable game consoles. Right now, I'm happy with a the ds lite and it complete won me over the sony psp even though I was a big fan of sony psone and ps2. However, the prices for game consoles are crazy, this game system is portable yet, costs as much as getting ps3 or xbox360, could someone please tell me what will make you pay such a high price for this system over the others?

  • In a way this is a bit of a niche product, since you need the emulators & ROMs for it to work as a game device (which, at least according to Nintendo, are illegal). Also you have to remember that this is more than just a game console. This can run Puppy Linux, or other light distributions, and be a full desktop if you wanted it to be.

  • I don't agree. There are plenty of homebrew games in work and there are many games for Linux which can be ported to ARM. You can even run Ubuntu on it and I don't see that as a "light dist".

  • Ubunu certainly isn't a lite distro, except I've been running it on more powerful hardware so I didn't think that the 600 MHz ARM would be able to handle it. Never stopped to look at the bare minimum requirements. LOL

  • NOpe, as you can see: Homebrews are the only things which keep the PSP alive. Trust me without HB PSP would be dead. And a whole opensource console? whoho you'll see ;).

    Abd dont forget: PSP-Go 300€ 333MHZ(64mb ram)

    PAndora 330€: 600MHZ(128mb Ram)

These are the 2 most important facts ;)

  • Actually the Pandora's been upgraded to 256MB of RAM.

Plus it has the dual SDs, touchscreen, dual analogs, and the end-user has full access to it.

  • nice :D

  • ill only buy pandora if a yu-gi-oh game comes out for it LMAO

  • If it has very decent Sega Saturn emulation i may be tempted........unless PSP2 is released next summer as i think it will be a portable PS2 that will be able to emulate all consoles upto Gamecube in time.

  • no, the PSP is like a portable PS2 (kinda). PSP Go! will be releast soon, but its like a smal psp without UMD. Ther wont be a PSP2 so soon. And to emulate GC playabel it would need about 1600mhz or even more, and by now ther isn´t a god portable prozessor at this speed.

  • PSP IS already a portable PS2 save for only 1 analog stick/nub and 2 shoulder buttons...it's actually slightly more powerful than the PS2.

I would suppose the next PSP would be somewhere around the power of the original Xbox or Wii or probably something closer to PC games from 2006/2007.

Or maybe the PS3 but that sounds unlikely.

  • well im not sure i agree with the PSP being as powerful as PS2 as i cant see games like Final Fantasy 12, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 and GTA San Andreas running on the hardware. Yeah i know Liberty City & Vice City Stories are on there and are close to PS2 but i think the PSP is more a super powerful 64bit machine rather than a 128bit. I totally agree about the next PSP being Xbox quality or Wii & hope to be playing it at the end of next year!

  • I know the specs of the PSP, 333mhz CPU and the GPU is slightly more powerful, but the problem is 2MB video memory instead of 4MB like the PS2 (though lower resolution requires less video ram anyway), both GTA games look better than their PS2 original counterparts.

Vice City stories looks better than the PS2 version of Vice City, and so does Liberty City stories though not as much as Vice City.

Crisis Core has Final Fantasy X graphics and even some better effects...

  • Well thats true but its still not powerful enough to EMULATE ps2. Emulation requires more power and hopefully PSP2 will be powerful enough to emulate Saturn/N64/Gamecube/Dreamcast and HOPEFULLY PS2 emulation as well as PSP emulates PS1 So we will be able to play games like FF12, Shenmue, F Zero GX, Ocarina Of Time, Goldeneye and touch wood 1 million times Panzer Dragoon Saga!

  • Obviously not, it's that what you were trying to say? not even my Dual Core PC can emulate PS2 very well because it's very complex...I think once Xbox emulation picks up it will require much lower specs on a PC to run it, such as cxbx.

And yeah, that would be awesome but who knows when Sony is coming out with a new one since they are JUST coming out with the PSPGo.

  • ...And you won't see FFXII running on a 1.8gb UMD no matter how compressed...the minimum would be probably like 2gb or so well compressed.

    And yes, it's full 128bit.

  • Well crysis core seem as good as ffXII if not better when compare to the graphic.

  • Definitely, I have it and it looks amazing.

  • Why don't you replace the two sd card slots with micro sd slots and fit in some bluetooth stuff, so anyone can control his robots with it?

  • Bluetooth is already included so you're covered. ;)

  • I've read it 2minutes later XD

But the microSD Slot for the second one, an idea?

  • why? you can use a micro SD to SD adapter. but u cant plug a SD card into micro sd^^ also SD is cheaper then micro SD.

  • God.. how i hate you for that.

"U cant plug the big one in the small one höhö..."

    1. Space. It's about space-management ... you could place something else there.. like an COM Port / Camera plug/ ...

    2. Money. there are plenty of microSD cards in mobile phones. When you have 300bugs for an opensource handheld-console, you may have the money for an 2GB microSD Card (7€) ...

  • well i realy dont see a point of using micro SD. U would save a few mm² of Space on the upper layer of the Board, but ther are now space problem one the board i think, ther is enogh room. im pretty shure that they can put on a few more things if they wanted.

And who the hell buys 2GB? Good 16GB SDHC 25€ good 16GB micoSD 55€

    wast of mony

  • This looks pretty slick! Could you do a video showing off the dual analogs, by any chance?

I hope you get some game companies behind your device, too.

  • Oh God I want one. I'll have to get my head round Linux though, which I hate. But I'm sure there'll be enough guides on the internet to help me.

  • why by a community developed Linux handheld... if you hate Linux?, geez some people...

  • because it's got q1,2 and 3, heaps of great emulators and the specs are quite good for a hand held. i think we can rough it out with bad ol' linux for such a compensation

  • "i think we can rough it out with bad ol' linux"

I'm a Linux user, I was criticising you...

  • why? i was using sarcasm to to make light of the fact that linux isn't as bad as people say it is.

and why me? did you know i was going to post a reply? I'm actually very open to the idea of using linux. If it means that i can have a powerful handheld machine then great. even the idea that it has an actually full blown multitasking os makes me like the idea of owning one.

and those who dislike Linux for it's complexity have a bunch of easy to navigate visual interfaces to use.

  • Yeah the Pandora will require you to flip the little switches to set the memory...

It only takes programs on punch cards.

No, wait, it has a GUI desktop environment similar to Window XP, but better.

  • They've already taken pre-orders for 3800 or so. I think 5000 will be out after the second batch ships.

And I already have a Nintendo DS, but this has way more CPU and no software locks. you can write your own programs for it, play video on it, access the Internet...

It really puts the DS to shame.

  • what is this song called? In know that it is from petshopboys, but the name.... can't imagine pls help, its so beautiful

  • Gin & Jag

  • what is a pandora?

  • Pandora: a mythological person.

Pandora's box: the box that held all good and bad, all of it escaped in to the world, except for hope, but the people did not know that hope was still traped, so they had hope.

OpenPandora: the most awesome thing in teh worldz!

  • It's like a miniature computer for gaming and internetting, and PDA things.

  • freaking awesome. me wants!!

  • How long until we can preorder for second batch? or outright order. Its been almost 6 months since first batch wondering at least if we can preorder for second!

  • They're going to start taking 2nd batch pre-orders once all the 1st batch ships, I think.

They might wait a while to fix any last-minute bugs, though, so they can have a better estimate for shipping date, but it will be shortly after the first batch is done shipping.

  • I can run my own mad games on this I believe! I've been waiting for something like this for a while!

  • Can you use it as an mp3 player?

  • Yes*.

MP3 is restricted under some licenses, and I don't think the OP team is buying an MP3 license, so you might have to install some illegal decoding software like VLC or something...

It will work one way or the other. Someone will make sure of that.

  • It's powerful to run PS2 games, but not nearly powerful enough to emulate them.

You can expect Xbox 1-level graphics from some of the better native games.

  • Anyone know if this thing is powerful enough to run PS2 games? There are some danmaku shmups for the ps2 I reeeally wanna play on the go (Mainly Mushihimesama), but I need to know the capabilities of this thing.

On the contrary, what kind of emulators are compatible?

  • They have PS1 and SNES emulators going, Dreamcast is possible, anything that came after that is not going to happen.

Also, the Amiga for some reason.

  • So emulating mushihimesama is not a possibility? :(
