besides our modern way of life e.g. flourescent light bulbs, microwave ovens, cellphones, radiotowers, television, computers, wireless routers, drinking water, food, etc. our dna can also be affected by our behaviour, habits and thought patterns and i suppose language as well
David Shenk seems to have missed one of the key aspects of 'geniusness' ---that is the ability to quickly develop competence with minimal effort. Almost anyone can become good at something if they fully apply themselves for great lengths of time, but our term ''genius'' is for those with the exceptional ability to learn and quickly comprehend things beyond the average.
I'm not saying epigenetics is pseudo-science and I don't give a shit if you're a neuroscience major, I'm an engineering major. What I'm saying is that he, as a non-scientist, should not discuss topics that he does not comprehend.
55 comments 7 months ago...... 2 the following month...then 1, next month 1...then none ...none.... then 1.... mmmm.... where am I going with this..... not sure. However.. my thoughts on the actual theory..... BEHAVIOUR - is it a gene based.... or thought based ... If it's thought based.... wow we have a lot of control.... we can enlighten people and change the world!!
This guy is a disgusting leftist propagandist, he distorts facts and does anything to promote a marxist agenda. He wants to destroy all research on IQ and genetic differences, because it fits his political view. Avoid like the plague if you want to keep your sanity.
So, have kids young before you fuck your genes up, or can you make positive changes in your epigenetics? I know we don't know that yet, just an interesting thought.
I see lots of people here jumping to all sorts of conclusions about this., let's not get carried away, eh folks? let's await sound scientific findings rather than assuming hanging by your feet produces tall children (OK i'm mocking a little).
this would imply that if one re-program oneself to act always in the best interest of all -to the point of self-perfection - that they would then pass this programming on to their offspring
if you are giving a speech, never say "i know it sounds crazy" because you are actually saying "the way that i am saying this makes even ME think its crazy". he needs a better statement
I think David Shenk is overstating his case considerably. Epigenetics almost always refers to cell differentiation within the body of one organism- that is to say, epigenetics is the reason why your skin cells are different from your red blood cells, despite the fact that they both have the exact same DNA. Only in rare cases (concerning very specific genes) have epigenetic effects been shown to carry across generations, and even then the effects only last for a few generations before being lost.
@jetboyJ22 its been shown alcoholism and other poisoning effects carry from parent to child. even if other effects are not proven yet this obviously lays the groundwork for further experimentation, say on use of muscle tissue leading to differently developed tissue patterns in offspring, this could be tested on mice and insects in labs fairly quickly, and is not at odds with other theories of reproduction or evolution. it's supplementary. one can 'overstate' it enough to get experiments moving
I wonder if this helps us adapt to our environment faster than through random genetic mutations, perhaps our odds to adapt/survive are slightly better than chance.
The main idea is what we do in our life will affect the genes that we give to our offspring, but not necessarily altering the genes of our own.
When I looked at these comments, they are filled with theist trying to again, take credit of what scientist had discovered and tagged on "Bible had said this".
This all sounds too simplistic and pathetic to me.
Surprisingly, a similar but superstitious version of this idea existed even before science existed, but I heard that that dealt with physical injuries or something silly like that :) So if it dealt with injuries, then the idea was that if you got very injured such as on your leg, then if you reproduced, your child could have something wrong with his/her leg.
Duuhhhh!!! this is what our ancestors and elders were teaching us...it is absolutly imperative that we teach our children what tha ancestors taught us
this sure sounds like the stance population control advocates take, where those with 'bad genes' are considered the lower class citizens; undesireables.
Wow! I will be checking out the full length video. For every parent that states their children are "bad," I will be forwarding this video for educational purposes. (LOL)
Then, the Environment you grew up in will, how you reacted to it will have an impact upon the following generations....Imagine then the impact upon Iraq and Afghan population 20, 40 years from now .
This is something many people have suspected for a very long time. People who aren't scientist, or even especially intelligent or philosophically inclined. Although they don't utter the scientific jargon.. They mean the same thing!
It's really cool to hear there's actually a scientific basis behind these people's intuitive ideas.
when I taught there was no problem with my best students, they already had their degree in the first year, they only had to do the work like filling in a form. the students who I spent most of my time with, were equally as good. but they were quashed by their parents never being there.. not on open days, not in conversation.. sad kids.
family is not the point,. love and security is what makes ppl feel worthy.

How behavior can affect genes accordingly is beyond me. Sure, many activities can put genes at risk of being modified, but modifying them to reinforce that behavior? It sounds far too Lamarckian to be valid...
Granted, I am not a geneticist nor a biologist, but I am not ignorant of the topic, either.
I had a long argument with my high-school biology teacher back in the early 80s about environmental effects on genes. She said it was impossible and almost lowered my grade for arguing about it. Good to know I was right!

So far I completely agree with him, and
this is something I know a lot about, but the
thing is with this information, all we need to do
to realize these things worldwide.... is to understand
that we are all one organism, and that all humans have
the same needs.... we need to become more connected
with each other like we once were, and to do that we have to
understand, that there is no us.. we are everything all around us.

I subscribe to science journals (the cheap ones)
It is indisputable fact that genes which determine behaviour are activated in many cases by nurture.
A good example is the 'plague' of ADHD, it need not exist if kids are not stressed or exposed to poisons, .it s statistical fact.
This is not science but comes from my experience as a lecturer.
Students who were brilliant had parents come to my open days.
so sad and damaging for those who's parent's didn't.
It was like pain which lasted for weeks.
