How were you able to judge distance with the webcam like that?

I just got one of these models for christmas and I can't get it to work. I've got the software in, plugged in, and I can use it for like 3-5 sec after plugging in before it cuts out. Seems like I can use it for the brief period between plugging in and windows fully recognising it or something? I'm on XP if anyone has any thoughts? Thanks

nice try, what kind of motion tracking algorithm did they use though, do u know? Blob tracking? Contour tracking?

Very simple blob tracking. I had to hack this up in 20 minutes before a meeting :) Basically it's diffing two images, averaging the changed blocks to find the centre of it and then moving the missiles towards that location. Ideally I need feedback into the system to be more accurate... toying with the idea of attaching the camera to one of the units to achieve that.

yeah, they are very cheap devices and can't move very fast. But as they are in a walk way and vaguely aim at people as the walk past they get a good laugh. So objective achieved :)
