use a320 at leat thier only 20 year old not 40 years old and if you like dc 9s think 717s new and safe dont get me rong i like dc9s flew on them as a cild now im 31 but nothing last for ever its a air plan not a car.
The old DC9 and MD80 feels like an old Cadillac - grand, solid, well-made, proud. It is like flying on a piece of solid iron through the sky. They will never make anything like it again.
The whir-whir-whir sound is electrical discharge from the ignitors. They're like big spark plugs that ignite the fuel/air mixture in the combuster. Once the fire is lit, the ignitors switch off.
Even the American airplanes built at the time of the Tupolev's were much quieter. The DC-9 may sound loud to many of you, and I agree it is very loud compared to the average plane today, but take a look at Russian jets such as the Tupolev. They made the 707, DC-8, 727, and DC-9 all sound soft...absolutely DEAFENINGLY loud...not to mention pretty unimpressive in terms of performance and fuel efficiency compared to the American airplanes.
Previous comment deleted due to disgruntled former NWA Mechanic. Probably one of the very same who sabotaged some airplanes and locked up the toolboxes. I heard all about that, and because of that, any support I had for AMFA flew out the window.
The JT8D has gotten a nice little new lease on life lately, with JSTARS (wisely) selecting it as the most economical choice for the E-8 re-engine project, and for another very exciting application which I'll leave to your imagination.
Yup! And a successful business jet will help pave the way for the return of supersonic passenger travel, probably much more economically than previously. The visionaries of the 1960s thought "the future" was right around the corner. They were just off by 50 years or so.
@chronos624 Gimme a break! There was never any need for supersonic travel, and still isn't. The high-bypass engine is a good thing. The "visionaries of aviation" turned flying into an ordeal and spotting into an impossibility.
@antimatterXXXIII Supersonic travel I agree isn't necessarily needed, but it sure would be a nice bonus...the main reason we don't have supersonic travel is that nobody has yet found a way to make an airplane truly quiet enough, large enough, and fuel efficient enough to do it. I suspect that one day that could happen...we certainly are much closer to that possibility. If we had a way to get that accomplished, people would be all over the idea. Until supersonic flight can be cheap, not happening
@chronos624 Let's also mention the destruction of TWA, PanAm, Eastern, Northwest, turning United and American into hell-companies, filling the skies and airports with miserable RJs, pissing away countless billions on trash like the B1, B2, F117, and F22, etc. etc. etc. and endless swath of economic ruination of a once great and proud American industry, aerospace. And you think bringing back the 707 as a "weapons system" is a good thing - drank the frickin' Kool-Aid!!
On the OUTSIDE...how similar do these sound of the JT3Ds of a B707-320C??? I took for granted my rides on DC-9s and 727s and NO "Noise Abatement!" But never got to ride in a 707. However, living by Barksdale AFB, I get to hear the B-52Hs taxi and climbout in Full Military Power (when fully loaded) with their 8 TF33s (Military version of the 707 JT3D)...they sound GREAT! And unrebuilt 707-based KC-135s that visit have pretty much the same sound. I also experienced Reverse Thrust Pushback w/DC-9!
I always remember that suddenly PUMP outside and then, we're ready to taxi... with the most incredible airliner sound, the JT-8D engines roaring back of my head.
OMG thank you all so much I was wondering what that whir whir whir sound was. It happened on the 727s too. I grew up on DC-9-30s, 737-200s, and 727-200s going back and forth between DFW and MEM on Delta as a kid. I miss these old planes so much. Im a FA for UAL now and we dont have engines that sound like this. Although I love the sound of 777s and 757s it does not come close to this. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS SOUND!!!!
Its the ignitors, not the fuel pumps. The fuel pumps stay on at all times. The reason why the ignitors make that sound is because they draw such a high current, it interferes with the intercom speakers allocated above your head.

Curse those RJ's they've almost wiped away the 717, jam packed the 100 seat market. and are just an eyesore.
P.S. when i first saw the CRJ 1000 I thought it HAD to be photoshopped.

For those who may be wondering, the WHIR WHIR WHIR sound you hear when you hear the fuel kick on... Those are the fuel pump starter motors..
JMG717 3 years ago
Its the ignitors, not the fuel pumps. The fuel pumps stay on at all times. The reason why the ignitors make that sound is because they draw such a high current, it interferes with the intercom speakers allocated above your head.
velocityflier16 3 years ago 2
@JMG717 actually its the igniter exciters.
91Snyder 1 year ago
@JMG717 The sound is actually the plugs recharging to ignite the fuel. It draws so much power that you can hear it over the intercom.
velocityflier16 1 year ago
Love this vid - DC-9 spoolups are so awesome, as are the B-727's.
Good vid/sound!
