I have no problem getting 40 mpg in my 83 GL wagon at 60mph on the highway. Can do better at 45-55. Even going offroading it never gets worse than 30, EVER. 340k on original motor, 2nd transmission.
its so funn inexpensive and built to stay that way.. its so true. my 1984 just broke a clutch cable last year a 27? year old clutch cable lasted that long. everything was built to last back in these days. sadly today you spend 4x more for a peice of crap that will give you problems in 5 years
@bestamerica 1984 was a Long time ago haha..Hey .In 1984 did you and your ex-wife shop around..look at other cars only with 3 colors in rear? or did you Only Like Subaru cars and buy yours?
@jakesaintsrow123 no fucking way .i have been around these very same subi's back in the day ..i have worked on many of these subi's from clutch cable replacement to engine overhaul ..to the clutch its self. and just about everything in between and constant vale lash adjustments .i probably spent 50k miles in these things and i can tell you THEY DO NOT get that kind of millage at all..if you believe that , then watch an early 80's ford truck commercial and they claim 34mpg's ,it doesnt happen
@390merc65 Then How come I Know someone who has an 83 Subaru sedan Like that red one and they recorded the MPG Properly and they were getting real close to that on the Highway? Yes some of these commercials do over exaggerate the MPG..But this Subaru did get close to that!
@jakesaintsrow123 if they are getting that mpg's out of it they are flat out lying to you...and look at it this way ...how can an old car like this get those number's ,,and yet it has a carb..yet in today 's technology a subi cant get that out of new cars?..no way is a 1600 or 1800 with a carb getting that millage ...44 mpg's??..no way at all ..even 30 is very hard to believe
Both were available as a 3-door hatchback and 4-door sedan - however the Subie could also be had as a wagon, a coupe and a pickup (there were jumpseats fitted to US market models to get around the chickentax), and the options of 4WD and Turbo (on certain markets)...

Hmm, so was this AWD or not?
Anyway, it looks smaller than the Accord, more like a Civic of the day.
