Does this have a manual gearbox? I have been on one of these old dinosaurs before and seem to remember a small electronic selector on the windowsill, and you can see the driver selecting gears here. How does that work? Does it stay in the previous gear until the driver has selected the next one?
@crafty1289 Semi Automatic gearbox, similar to a car gearbox but no clutch. Change gear with a pause in between each gear change, blip the throttle when changing down to get the engine revs at the right speed to engage a lower gear
the last full leyland olympian has now been withdrawn from arriva yorkshire.616 was the last 1 to operate with arriva although it does say on the vid name "last ECW with arriva"
Briefly on the subject of other splendid Olympians, a really wonderful example was 520 CWR 520 Y which was at Selby Depot from start to finish of its long career. Goodness knows how many coats of differing colours it had with all the changes in ownership of the one time "B & S" depot at Chimes Road. I used to help out at Selby a lot, and loved it, and 520 remained one of the finest Olympians ever in terms of sound bodywork and mechanical excellence. and it has been sold for even more PCV use.
577 still survives i have been working on her today with her loving owner its part stripped and is not long away from having its West Ridding livery reapplied.
She goes and sounds just like she should and maybe returning to the rd,s at the end of this summer/year.
last one?! in Norwich (with FIRST, not arriva) we have 2 left (both H reg) with what I think are EC bodies and one Leyland with a nc body, come one come all to Englands alrgest open air bus museum.
Anglian also have an olympian which sees service once in a blue moon.
this bus was then sent to selby depot to live out it's last days before a driver there bought it and is currently putting it back to its former west riding glory!!! This was NOT it's last run
Never seen an Olympian (or Titan come to think of it) with the Hydrayclic box being driven like that. Normally the drivers seem to bung it in top and go off that way.
I must admit that your box standard driver would slam them through the box but any concerning drivers (such as the one driving in the video) would enjoy driving them and drive them through the gears like you should. The pause between gears seemed a bit too much for drivers in later days. Shame really. As for 'bunging it in top and away we go' I dont this is possible. Most boxes wont let you set off in top !!
Not as bad as some of the drivers I have seen and heard driving them in service. Some really do slam the gears through !. I always drove them properly and enjoyed doing so !
Brings back some memeries. I used to drive the 'limp alongs' and Bristol VR's, and although old then were good fun. But the newer buses are by far more comfortable.
we still got 1 at our depot (Darlington) 7271:L721FVN. Not sure when it is being withdrawn but it will be before 2009 i'm told by the ADM. Mechanically its in fine shape, but the internal floor and roof leave something to be desired (smells of mildew).
Hi there nice video footage I like the Atlanteans/Olympiams LRT Lothian used to have ECW Olympians but they have now been discontinued in favour of Dennis Trident II. They still have a few later ones in the fleet folowed by Volvo Olympian/Royalle and a couple of Harleyquine 200s
What was the upstairs headroom height on these?.

we've still got an L reg Leyland Olympian up here in Arriva north east. i get to work with her every day :)

nice to see a semi-auto Olympian being driven properly, even letting the revs drop before selecting the next gear :)

Sounds like the road was full of potholes.

I meant using the "Hydracyclic" function of the 'box, driving as a fully auto, unless this was never fitted with one from the start?!?
glenrea 4 years ago
Sorry, I didn't realise what I though was top gear was actually "Drive". I've only driven Nationals and atlanteans with the "Normal" semi Auto!

is this semi automatic

Sadly this bus was finally withdrawn on 8th September 2007, but has at least been secured for preservation.

this is a rattly old shed!!!!
pvsbarnsley 4 years ago
Yeah but it is 23 years old and still in everyday service. There are many newer vehicles (less than 2 years old) that rattle just as much !
national20 4 years ago
yea i suppose, the brand new 07 plate optare i went on yesterday had lots of rattles so that kind of proves the point!
it also has a door bell when you push the bell!!!
i like swindons G101-5 AAD and the ex Bristol Roe bodied olympians though.
I find that ECW bodied ones dont have the Roe charachter about them even though they are more or less identical!!

577 is still in service and recently MOT'd
