There's a sketch in "Naked Video" (1986-90) and they interrupt half way through, put up the BBC Logo and the announcer says "This is an Emergency Announcement. Fighting has broken out on the border between East and West Germany and Nuclear Missiles have been fired at Britain. The Four Minute Warning is about to be sounded............Except for viewers in Scotland." Both the scariest and funniest thing I ever saw.
Was looking forward to the new series of "Have i got news for you" tonight, sat down, opened a beer and then got told it wasnt on in Scotland tonight as River City is on- rescheduled because of tuesdays Scotland game (which we lost of course)
@maplaptop - i was delighted when bsb & sky appeared, even though i didn't exactly have subscriptions to either the fact there were some free tv channels including mtv was a vast improvement. finally, something to do. for a while...
We in Scotland were not allowed to see the only good telly programme that ITV produced, because STV insisted we had to watch another series of Taggart.
What did we do to deserve this? Sure, we could watch ITV London on Sky, but I don;t want to give my money to Murdoch. And the online catchup is very poor quality.
the worst is Newsnight Scotland. Instead of getting the interview, which is the best bit of the program, you get some bloke repeating the headlines you've already heard....with a Scottish accent.
I used to be a Nationalist, but thanks to STV's stupidity and their SNP friends, not anymore!
Why do we Scots have to go through crap like Fitz, old repeats and shows with Scotland in the title on STV instead of Doc Martin, The Fixer, Midsomer Murders and Marple on the ITV network?
BBC Scotland don't do this not because London tells them what to show but because we in Scotland want to see these shows at the same time as our London friends and MOST SCOTTISH PROGRAMMES ARE RUBBISH ANYWAY!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The reason you're no longer a nationalist is because you fear the telly will be crap in an independent Scotland? With morons like you it's no wonder we don't run our our country.
@MrSargeSays Didn't realise how bad it was till i moved to glasgow...even things like football matches and films...people in scotland like films and football too...
I'm really confused here. Is your support for the Scottish Nationalists based on the sum of their policies or on their raison d'etre, i.e. independance?
It's not an attack on Scotland. It's a reminder of how things used to be a few years ago.and it's pretty accurate. Now STV are turning back the clock so we in Scotland have to see inferior programmes while everyone else gets the good stuff. And Alex Salmond and the SNP want to stop us getting BBC which will mean we'd be worse off than when we started. But now you get accused of being a traitor if you complain.
At no point in history has Gaelic been the language of most Scottish people. It is a language peculiar to the west coast and islands.
The language sopken by the rest of the people prior to the arrival of English is known to historians as Brythonnic, the ancestor of modern Welsh.
Indeed this was the language of the whole island prior to the arrival of Germanic settlers bringing Anglo-Saxon and Irish settlers bringing the ancestor of Gaelic.
One early evening I'd left my TV on BBC2 whilst reading a book and De a nis must have come on. My English flatmate walked in and said "Why are you watching a German show?".
Looks like were going to hear that more often since STV are virtually opting out of every ITV programme (inc. Football) nowadays replacing it with 5 year old Irish Dramas and Tweed-Tartan Pish!!
And if you look at the gaelic wikipedia page, you will see that's there are none to hardly any gaelic speakers in the northeast, central belt and the south of Scotland. It makes no sense to show Gaelic programming in this area. It doesn't even really make sense to have the whole of Scotland as one tv region.
Sorry, I do really love this video though. It's completely true!
Why does a funny clip have to turn into a fucking unionist debate? we do sometimes get special Scots programmes and sometimes they're shite. And people would prefer to watch what everyone else in the UK is watching.
It's not as bad now because we can watch what we want. But I guess back when Armando was a kid it must've been a right pain if you weren't able to see UK programme you wanted to see because of the Scots programming. Which I imagine was even shitter back in the day.
I'll live in the past some more then by reminding you that television was invented by a Scotsman. We have all the channels you have and, believe it or not, occasionaly see shows before they've been broadcast down south. Zat no amazin!
There was almost no live football in Scotland in the '60s and '70s (except the Scotland England game) because the SFA refused to allow it. That was the worst thing.
'Also, classing anyone as inherently racist is going to put any form of intelligent debate on the back foot'. By this rationale, no-one can be inherently racist, then, unless the accuser is a dullard?
Antaghan, as much as I am an admirer of free speech, I think we can all agree that retrojunkies' comment and the video are light-hearted, and don't have a political agenda. So in future please tone down your faux-aggressive internet persona, we all know your probably not that nasty in real life. Iannucci a racist? "If you don't like it , move to England you Unionist filth" - now THAT'S the kind of thing that might come out of a racist's mouth.
Light hearted? If I made comments about any other minority language, Asian Radio for example, I'd be castigated as being racist, (and rightly so). Nope, not faux-aggressive, I detest Unionists with every bone in my body - they are inherantly racist.
Most appreciated, my good fellow! It does get hard not to give in, though, when faced with constant attacks on Gaelic and Scottish culture which are dismissed as 'fun'.
Hmm...I think you misunderstand me. Also, I believe Armando to be suitably proud of his Scottish roots, just not necessarily of the general approach to televisual programming. Also, classing anyone as inherently racist is going to put any form of intelligent debate on the back foot.
"I don't want to watch English football, but I get it. If you don't like it, move to fucking England you Unionist filth. Ianucci is filthy Unionist wop racist peice of shit." Great, my irony meter just exploded.
And here we see the reality of sentiment behind nationalism - xenophobia and hatred towards others. English nationalism is just the same way. It's the more reasonable English and Scots that want emphasise what unites us rather than divides us.
@Antaghan I come from a part of Scotland that's spoken Scots, historically, so I guess I'm English along with the rest of the majority of lowlanders and consequently the majority of Scots. You're right, though; if I spoke a language descended from Old Irish I would be more authentically Scottish.
Scotland for real Scots! Let's all go back to Ireland and give Scotland back to the Picts. Except we can't, because they're all dead.
It's so true! It's ridiculous that Gaelic programs are even shown. 5000 people speak Gaelic so 5 million people who don't have to suffer while their programs are shown!
"Their"? What a shame. I'm assume you call yourself Scottish? The state of our country is too a great extent the result of our own cultural ignorance. We have had successfully instilled in us the greatest of cultural dangers... a culture divided against itself. What makes us Scottish anymore? Language? No. Cultural Traditions? No. Myabe having a seperate football team is all it takes? There is hardly anything that distinguishes us as a seperate nation as opposed to 'North Britain'.
Gaelic is one thing that makes us different. I despair that there are Scottish people who know nothing about Gaelic and are still willing to take sides against it. Oh. and please get your figures right. There are nearly 60,000 of us left despite the best efforts of many.
Actually the historic language for most Scottish people is lowland Scots, which is a Germanic language. Scottish gaelic is just the Highlanders trying to impose their culture on all Scots.
Eh, nonsense - you're clearly not educated on this subject. Yes, Scots-English (which I also support and which racists also degrade as 'slang') superceded Gaelic in many places but, as Gaelic placenames show, it was spoken in all parts of the country except the Shetlands (Dunbar, Kilwinning, Kilmarnock, Auchencruive etc.)
You don't really think that? Seriously? The Highlanders' are trying to impose their culture on all Scots? Because we refuse to die out? How many of my fellow posters also believe this? It's the other way round and make no mistake. How many millions have been spent trying to stamp out Gaelic over the centuries? I really do despair at attitudes like this... Wanting to understand your own language and appreciate your own culture doesn't make you a racist or a xenophobe, quite the opposite.
I have a great appreciation for all the cultures I come into contact with, especially the one geographically nearest to me, the language of which I am also a fluent speaker: English! Just 'cause I'm happy not to be a monoglot doesn't make me a racist, pal, so please don't level such serious and ridiculous statements at me.
By the way, I agree with Antaghan. Studying the place-names of Scotland clearly show that Gaelic was spoken over most of the country for around a thousand years. Check out W.J. Watson and W.F.H. Nicolaisen for the most comprehensive material on the subject.
To be fair I wasn't clear. I think its a positive thing people learning what ever languages and cultures they wish to. I just don't like it when people are made to feel like they're not a real Scot because they dislike programming they can't understand. And the lowlanders spoke Brythonic before Gaelic arrived - the same language that the English were speaking at the time.
Semantics. The ancestors to the English. Just as the people speaking Brythonic in "Scotland" at the time weren't the modern Scots but their ancestors.
Indeed. At least there's something we agree on! Although, It's difficult to place them as ancestors of the English or Scottish or anyone else, I guess. They were just a group of people that lived there before the others got here. I guess if they were the ancesotrs of anyone it would be the Welsh.
Actually, recent DNA research has shown that 80%+ of British DNA in all the home nations comes from the people living on these islands in the pre-Celtic days. It was the settled population adapting to the culture of relatively few immigrants that caused all the supposed differences between the four home nations. PS. I wrote some stuff on your own page.
I never called you racist, and I apologise if you interpreted that way. Having an affection for your particular culture is patriotism, which is positive. Wanting to impose that culture on others, and using that culture to breed hatred of others, is nationalist, which is racist and nasty.
Ok. I take your point, but I disagree. I must say that having Gaelic programming (which is where all this started!) is not imposing Gaelic on the population of Scotland. The fraction of money spent on Gaelic programming is a drop in the ocean compared to the fraction of BBC money spent in Scotland to begin with. I just think that there is a prejudice which some Scots have against Gaelic, almost like there's been a mass- conditioning in Scottish education for centuries (surely not, eh?).
Ignoring Gaelic is not 'progress' as some people would have it, it is facilitating the destruction of Scotland's national language and culture, which belongs to all of us who are Scottish, even if you don't speak a word of it, or are completely indifferent to it. I feel that people should at least be proud of its existence and not fall into the trap of condemning it as useless and irrelevant to the modern age (though I'm not aiming that at you, directly).
Such an ancient culture (which is still alive!) has much to teach all of us. Gaelic offers us a unique window on reality, as any speaker of more than one language will be able to tell you. Once that language is gone, a great culture of over a thousand years standing will disappear from the world. Embracing the modern age and getting on with one another doesn't mean we all have to be exactly the same, right?
? Human civilisation has so much to offer us outside of Britain's colonial attitude which did so much harm to Gaelic and other cultures around the world. We should embrace it as a cultural bond that all Scots share, not do the 'nay-sayers'' and culture-bashers' job for them
Waa! What a rant! I hope people don't get too bored reading it :-P Apologies to all. My last point... If you really want to bemoan cultural imposition, then turn your map the right way up;p To argue that Gaelic is somehow imposing itself on Scotland or anywhere else is laughable, especially considering the lengths the British establishment went to destroy it. Pavlov spends too much on pedigree chum as it is...

Ack. I'll try again tomorrow. I think I saved it anyway.
