@morrologic The problems were many, and too long to list in the space available here. In a nutshell, most, but not all audio functionality was non-existent - the OS did not recognize the internal speaker as a viable audio output path, and phone calls were indecipherably static prone. Numerous "full restores" failed to fix this. Apple tech indicated signs pointed to corrupted firmware, and 3 attempts to nuke and pave the system failed before completion. - more info following in next post....
@morrologic ...(followup post) - So it seemed like a clear case for simple swap of a defective unit. But over the first few days, I kept thinking I could fix it with a full restore, so when my ZAGG shield arrived on the 3rd day, I decided to apply it - which included a liquid spray applicator. This left evidence of liquid presence on the inner ring of one of the ports which the tech indicated could compromise my claim of a defective unit without some degree of my own culpability....(next post)
@morrologic (more followup)...my concern was having to pay full unsubsidized price (~$800) for a new 32GB phone. Apple negotiated meeting me partway as long as I purchased the new AppleCare+ plan, which I was planning on doing anyway. This plan extends the warranty, and allows for 2 incidents of $49 replacement fee in cases of user breakage during that time, and costs $99. I paid that, plus $100 added charge for buying it after the fact, but still have my 2 incidents intact, which is a bonus...
@morrologic ...(still more followup), So in the end, I paid a total of $250 to replace my $299 model (but didn't have the extra tax charges this time), but now have the $99 AppleCare+ extended warranty with the warranty replacement allowances still intact for the next 2 years. While I know for certain that it was a defective unit and would have preferred to not have paid the extra $100, it could have been worse....so...there it is.
Wow! I'll bookmark this for all the great resource information you've pointed to. Even with the blatant self-promotion, this was a very interesting and informative video.
How do you know that your unit is defective, what is the problem? How did you pay for the exchange?
