As amazing as it sounds, the effect is actually driven by a very simple circuit with not much more than couple of transistors which weaken with use, heat & time.
PB's aren't even built to the same standards that the older tube TV's were, so if it isn't the transistors, then it is often the flyback transformer that gives up.

I broke the glass on mine and wrapped the little orb in tin foil and it was like a mini Tesla Coil! If you take the tin foil off nothing happens.
