This was a great song back when I was in Nam . When we got our draft cards and some didn't
have the connections to get in the guard and to stay out of harms way. Thats what the song is about ( the senators son ) .There was quit a few of them ,including GWB Jr.
@joeogost OK, one more time for the mentally challenged... one minute of flying a fighter jet stateside as GWB did, is more dangerous than serving five months as a journalist for "The Castle Courier" in Vietnam a la Al Gore. Case closed.
Im very pro war (I plan on joining up.) But this shit is just dragging itself out. We need to pull our boys out and send in Blackwater. If we hiring the guys mine a well us them all.
@LJSimpson3 you'd be surprised at how few people actually understand the meaning of the song. one marine veteran i know said "this is the best song of all time! it's all american! god bless america and the american government!" you have no idea how pissed that made me. it seems like all the songs we label as "patriotic" or treat it like a "second anthem" are actually criticizing america. which is what i like about them. we need to think about our country in a different light.
I like the song and photographs and video you made, but feel as with many songs from the 60's the original had a meaning that has since been completely forgotten.
wow, im going into the military and all my friends think im crazy, and all im going to do is go into war and shoot people. I'll have to show them this vid!
You really gotta understand that it isnt that simple. First off the war has slowed to a crawl now. I was in Fallujah in '03 it wasnt just us going out and kicking the shit of people we took fire I had friends get killed and it fucks with your head a little bit even killin people fucks with your head some. It isn't as straight forward as going out and killing people
still ain't over, boys

If you're trying to make it look like the front lines ain't that bad you should have picked a better song than fortunate son.
