How on earth do you come accross an advert thats 33 years old.Quite amazing. How do you keep it on video or whatever for so long. Its good to have people like you posting things like this.Happy, simple days. Thanks a lot.
I love this ad. the makers wanted to make an ad for tv sets as entertaining as a tv show you would watch on it, with singing and dancing. loved all the granada cars setting off.Ncie one
All we got from Granada was a crappy 20 inch TV which had dry joints on the PCB every week. I think the TV repairman spent more time in our house than we did!
My mum & dad got their satan-box from these guys, always good to know it was cheap, would never break down and that the service was designed for poorer families to have a mainstream propaganda device in their homes, we believed the adverts, all was true (no dodgy phone-ins) and we believed it all, it was just pure manipulation while being entertained, still is? don't have one anymore, cheaper electronics killed these TV-services, oh well...
An interesting approach - TV hire from a TV broadcaster - at least the sets were colour... - I like the approach of the red T-car Vauxhall Chevette wagons (I recall there was also a Bedford Chevanne variant without the rear side windows) being used as delivery vehicles...

ha ha i love the 70's , turning up a shitty chevette its a shit tv (with hi fi sound ? lol through 1 speaker.. yea right) that you cant afford to buy. comedy genuis
more useless information the TV in the advert is a Finlandia possibly a C22PZ1 ? its one claim to fame was a Thyristor line out put system, not very reliable and unpleasent to repair.
Am I wright in thinking Finlandias were badged up Sallores (spelling)sold to Granada I know thw Vikeing brand were Tandbergs
We rented that touch tuned Finlandia featured in the advert, for about five years. It was quite reliable for the first couple of years, then it started breaking down every few months. I can still remember the regular visits by the Granada engineer pulling into our driveway in his red Chevette.
In the mid 80s we stopped renting and took the plunge and purchased a new Sony at quite a considerable expense.
I was a engineer for Granada in the 70's and we did use Chevvettes, they replaced the Vauxhall Viva estate,
As for video recorders, Phillips sold a domestic one in the early 70's called the 1500, but the first VHS VCR I repaired at Granada was proberly about 1978, it was the JVC 3V00, know in the trade as a "clonker box". We often changed valves (known in the trade as "bottles") those days, the valves Granada bought were poor quality ones that never lasted, I changed houndreds of PCL85's
I remember the philips N1500 silver one with manual tracking, after that was I think N1750, smart all black with auto tracking and digital timer. Tapes were about £12 a go.
Yes red Chevettes. I always remember when I was a kid the Granada TV service man pulling up in our driveway in his red Chevette about once a month to change a valve or something, guess our Granada Colour TV wasn't too reliable.
I wonder how that free trial worked with the requirement to pay for an annual license to own a TV in the UK? Did they have temporary licenses, in case you were to return the TV?
I remember the stereo pre-NICAM tv's in the early 80's;you could get stereo from linear stereo VHS video cassettes,HiFi VHS Stereo video cassettes,Laserdisc players and stereo from some low power satellite stations using the Wegener Panda 1 stereo system too. You needed to use stereo AV leads to get stereosound from these sources,RF connection ruins the picturequality and you don't get stereo audio either(unless you used a hifi system with phono/DIN leads to route stereo sound out into it).
Also when it's properly set up;the results are superb, your favourite music and films on VHS linear stereo/HiFi VHS Stereo/Laserdisc and some low power satellite stations(if you had a motorised satellite setup with huge dish beaming down Music Box/Sky Channel/Super Channel etc)in glorious stereo sound on your Granada Finlandia stereo tv making neighbours jealous how you got it!
You should post this add in the Autos section too I well remember those Chevette Estates form Granada Rental! Theres a lovely 70s Chevette ad on You Tube!

You're wrong They were VCRs in 1977 but Betamax VCRs
chao772 3 years ago
True, but the domestic Betamax wasn't launched in the UK until 1978, 3 years after Japan and the USA.

chabba77 3 years ago
not to own, just to watch broadcast channels. they had one for radio too, but they canned it.
also, no cable in the uk and only 3 channels in all of the country at that time.
kargaroc386 3 years ago
Not quite right, two companys that ran a cable system were Redddiffusion and British Relay.

mussdover 4 years ago
I was born in 1982, so maybe not!! I wonder where the girl is now.
The advert is really 70s. The music, the dancing, the white middle class family, the camera zooming in on the dancer's chest at the end.
