The Matrix is a rip off of numerous stories by Philip K Dick and works like Nueromancer. The fact that people think that the Matrix is original amazes me.
@CasusUniversum Vampire Eyes, actually. She played Evilyn in Masters of the Universe which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, circa 1989. Those eyes really showed in that flick
@Brumleboer That was a bit different: it told about a prisoner, who tought to be able to see reality by the shadows in front of him. And he didn't know to be a prisoner. Something like North Korea isolation. (You must think much tu understand)
I wish I could have pleasant dreams. I'm always dreaming that I'm in some war. It's night and I'm running through the city with bombs going off everywhere. Maybe it's a premonition. Oooooo
the premise of the story will soon become a reality in the next 20yrs or less.... believe it, read big brother the orwelian nitemare come true by mark dice!
fucking phil k dickhead. and i mean that in the most respectful way. this whole, is life really what we think. is it real. fucking love the question. and it is understandable. life isnt really what it could be. i mean, it is, but our understanding isnt what it could be. to help you/me understand this aspect, i ask, "would your/my life be better w/ more money" if you answered yes, then, well, you are still living in a system of thinking that is not "real". money is paper.
It should not be a surprise to anyone--Matrix is utterly derivative from beginning to end. This episode is much more similar to Total Recall, which of course is based on a Philip K. Dick story.
The only thing original about the Matrix was figuring out a way for Keanu to be in a movie where his inability to act was something of an asset.
@youngrasshopper694 My guess is she died thinking the dream world was real. If you watch from 6:50 her machine malfunctions then she smells her brain getting fried by the machine and asks her husband if he smells something burning. The husband asks if she's cold because she's shivering bringing me to believe she was getting electrocuted and dying. At the very end it seemed she was getting pronounced dead and the man at 8:42 walked away carrying a medical case. So she died in a happy place :)
"Women, don't be mothers, don't be wives, don't be housewives, don't waste your life serving a man, being his slave, come out and work, we are building new factories where you will have a job, you will get your own money, and get to work for many many men who just won't care for you.. and if one day you will realize the mistake and dream to go back and have a family, kids, a loving husbnd, we'll let you live... the dream..."
Meg Foster's eyes are just light grey, more than you usually find. Nothing evil or weird about them. It's like Liz Taylor having violet eyes, that kind of thing. :)
Matrix wasnt about butterlies and if you a butterfly was capable of dreaming it might make sense, but still wouldnt be like the matrix - a movie about artificial intelligence controlling humans.
@Drummydrum Matrix and its artificial intelligence is a modern metaphor, like those used
in the apocalyptics descriptions in the Bible or other ancient miths like the Omeric Odissey.
A way to make others to understand some indescribable concepts about this world we live in. Who knows what a butterfly dream, it is a living being so must be capable of dreaming
Once Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Zhuangzi. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuangzi. But he didn't know if he was Zhuangzi who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. Between Zhuangzi and a butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.
Question, if you had a choice of living in a perfect dream world where you were rich, married to a hot wife, great job, and wonderful family would you choose that over reality? I'm starting to understand why Cipher took Agent Smith's offer.
To all those arguing about how old this idea is. Whether it was in the 50's or 60's. Lol this idea is as old as recorded history. Look up 'The Butterfly Dream' by Lao Tzu which is where the idea for the Matrix and all similar ones spawn from.
@StephiStuff The lady in the scene with the man and girls is the mother and wife. That scene is a "simulation" of a reality she wants to experience. When u see her again, she's inside a pod aside other "vacationers." The pod malfunctions at some point and she's caught between reality and fantasy. While they try and fix it, she decides to choose fantasy and drifts into that permanent state. In reality(back in the faulty pod), she dies while inside her dream which she still believes is real.
@StephiStuff This episode is a conceptual prelude to the Matrix movie series but the concept is still yet older, ironically, belonging to another episode of the original Twilight Zone series.
@huelink300 Meg Foster i believe, if you think back and remember the late seventies and early eighties she played in a lot of low budget tv shows and movies she was unforgettable because of her eyes. Do you remember back in 1980 when the mini series Guyana Tragedy was playing if you think about it you will remember she was one of the main characters.
That is indeed Meg Foster. You can catch her in "They Live" as well. Joe bob Briggs once said while airing a movie she was in on his "Monstervision" program: "She built an entire career on those eyes."
The day my life became a turntable deck. Wow if i was to go into an interactive dream and go somewhere more exciting than a country picnic, i say skydiving without a parachute for starters!
@Parasite1101 Imagine if you could change your outfit, tools, and the dream you're in. For example, falling over the edge of Niagra Falls, just before you hit the water, you change into someone skydiving with no parachute through a cloud into a volcano and before you hit the lava turn into someone hang-gliding around the Himilayan mountains and then go fly through a canyon, dream change, going off a cliff with no parachute or glider, doing a double frontflip cannonball painlessly into the ocean.

@youngshow361 We are in the Matrix my friend, take a good look around, people do the same job day after day year after year we pretend to have money buy borrowing lots of it, we beleive that politicians and rich and powerful peolpe care about us, but they use us just like the machines to make them more powerful, they lie to us and use us up. To get out of the Matrix, don't live for money or pretend to have money, enjoy the simple things in life and don't work long hours.
@Froggatt Isn't it funny how heartless peolpe like you have to insult other people, I am not useless or a bum, but you are definately a piece of shit my friend and if you are not poor then that does not give you the right to insult people and not feel sorry for those who may be poor. I just felt Inception was original unto it's own, because the timing is a story line unto it's own;
Either way it's classic T.V. like The Twilight Zone, and Tales From The Crypt that inspired some of the best Sci-Fi/Horror directors. Nolan, Wachowski's and Verhoeven whom also did Robocop Total Recall and Starship Troopers. Twilight Zone was truly brilliant script writing.
Congratulations. Your Alien mother would be proud. Point is there is even a Tales from the Crypt with the same notion of programming. Media in general is a programming system.
@PufferBluntman Look up, "World of Difference" from the original TZ series. The guy fades in and out without the help of the pods. I think this is where this concept came from, ironically. . .
@slimdudeDJC well, the point is - the idea of simulated reality isn't new, it was even in the original 60's TZ when a soldier wanders around a simulated town taking part in some governmental experiment.
@PufferBluntman Yes, that was my point. Now that you brought up the guy in the government experiment in the desert, it seems TZ TOS had two episodes devoted to the Matrix concept. Very nice concept BTW. . .

zazack79 10 months ago
In a way, this idea is closer to the plot of "inception" than the matrix except for the suggestion of programming of the whole human race.

Not picking a fight!
I just felt Inception was original unto it's own, because the timing is a story line unto it's own;
Either way it's classic T.V. like The Twilight Zone, and Tales From The Crypt that inspired some of the best Sci-Fi/Horror directors. Nolan, Wachowski's and Verhoeven whom also did Robocop Total Recall and Starship Troopers. Twilight Zone was truly brilliant script writing.

@k2blue7 not picking a fight, but it;s who not whom. I'm an asshole.

@alienlifeform11
Congratulations. Your Alien mother would be proud. Point is there is even a Tales from the Crypt with the same notion of programming. Media in general is a programming system.

@k2blue7 don't forget Isaac Asimov who wrote the laws of robotics

So, what? Her mind's in the computer now?
hypnodance 11 months ago
The idea of people being in a virtual computer reality has been around for longer than this, it's been in science fiction since at least the fifties.

It's more like Total Recall than the Martix I think.

@wiltner I was gonna say the same thing!

@wiltner this is exactly like Total Recall

@PufferBluntman Look up, "World of Difference" from the original TZ series. The guy fades in and out without the help of the pods. I think this is where this concept came from, ironically. . .
slimdudeDJC 4 months ago
@slimdudeDJC well, the point is - the idea of simulated reality isn't new, it was even in the original 60's TZ when a soldier wanders around a simulated town taking part in some governmental experiment.
PufferBluntman 4 months ago
@PufferBluntman Yes, that was my point. Now that you brought up the guy in the government experiment in the desert, it seems TZ TOS had two episodes devoted to the Matrix concept. Very nice concept BTW. . .

I met Meg Foster Texas Frightmare Weekend and told her how much I liked this episode and she seemed shocked that I remembered this episode.
