Man, I used to do growls perfectly when I had a blackened death metal band from the age of 16 'till 19, but I'm 23 now and I forgot how to do them...and even though I can play guitar I always liked vocals a lot and a few friends who are really great musicians actually want to do something serious (also extreme metal) and want me to try as their vocalist, but I can't do growls anymore.

I remember I used to practice with clean singing first and it helped me but not now, specially if I drink!

It hurts alot less when your training your voice for death metal vocals, but you'll get more of a Randy Blythe typeof sound. If you like it, more power to ya brother, but if not slowly incorporate your vocal chords more till you can push your voice to that level without it hurting. If neither of the methods work, train your voice with clean singing first. Sounds weird, but it works

First of all, the Alfred Hitchcock reference was absolutely genius.
