Another option for aspiring hams is my No-Nonsense Technician Class Study Guide. It's available for free as a PDF download, a Kindle or Nook e-book, and even a print version. A General Class study guide is also available, and an Extra Class study guide will be available for the new question pool sometime in May.
They have prep tests that will help you! There are like three hundred possible questions that will could be asked on the test. The prep test are made up of these questions. While the prep test is not exactly the same as the actual test. The questions are. You will become familar with the questions... Look for latest version as it was all updated in the last year or two!! Then for anything that you don't understand Gordons book will have the answer!! Hope that helps!!
@dafrogtoad the general has almost twice as many questions if I remember, and the extra has almost 900... but if I can pass em all, you for SURE can !
@dafrogtoad thanks.. I have so much to learn.. The electronis and laws part of this exam are pretty straight forward but, i'm still confused on what a tech can and can't do.. And how far can I transmit etc.. a lot of the youtube vids are either reviews or testing or way over my head.. :(
sorry if i'm asking a dork question but, I haven't seen your 1st 2 vids.. do you have a radio now?? Because I don't and even tho the test seems pretty easy im gonna feel lost on the radio.
@cmobley69 I have a Baofeng 2m/440 handheld..not the BEST unit, but seems ok. The Wouxon handhelds seem to be the popular ones for beginners. You can see them both at Wouxonusdotcom...I DO have an HT set..but it sits waiting for me as I do not have the license yet to operate it legally
i'm taking my Tech Test on Saturday. :) I'm using the site hamradiolicenseexam I highly recommend this site for studying. It works. it was a recommendation from RenaissanceMan
@dafrogtoad it's funny because I said the same thing to armywifeprepper.. I was messin like Socal is.. man I felt bad because I was just playing but I think she really felt bad..
@cmobley69 I saw that, and I was playing your words back at ya... hahaaaa...
good times brother. you might as well take the General while you are at it, its free and the off chance that you pass is slim unless you study, but you sould get a 60% or so on it.
Study for it a little... and maybe you can knock em both out....
@SoCalPreppers hahahaha... you know what's funny, after I posted that comment I said crap.. didn't mention Socal and I bet he'll say just what you said.. crazy.. Yes Socal you da man too... So you guys think I should take the Gen too even tho I haven't studied for it. Whatcha think?
@cmobley69 EVERY person I spoke with said it easier to go for BOTH at the same time..if I can get the study material..I'll probably do it..just depends on that and timing..
@cmobley69 the additional bandwidth is why I studied for the general... and then it was lijke... well I got this far, might as well do it all the way....
Hey Bro... I attached a video response to this for you. It lists the 3 free resouces I used to study when I took the Tech test. They include a video series done by a fellow You Tuber here , a study guide on the exam and a site that you can sign up for(free) to take practice exams/flash cards on the question pool for the exam. Make sure that you sign up for the test site as it will keep track of what questions/answers you have taken so you can see what you need to study.
hey Bud! One of the things you want to look at is upgrading to at least an HT with a DTMF dial pad to allow you to direct enter frequencies and other info instead of scrolling using the up and down buttons. If you have time, check out the one I have been referring people to: the WOUXUN brand dual-band HT. They are stupid cheap, and apparently pretty good! Also, keep an ear out for a hamfest in your area..a lot of them are in the late winter/early spring. GREAT place to learn!!
@HamBeau Awesome advise Hambeau..thanks!.. I have also heard great things about the Wouxon radios. I have a Kenwood 140s just WAITING for me to get the General. (singing "High Hopes")
@dafrogtoad You're going about it the right way. HF is definitely something to work for due to the possibilities that open for long distance comms, but you have a LOT of options in the high band stuff as well, especially in systems like IRLP(Internet Repeater Linking Project), Echolink, and other systems that can show you new ways to get connected. Check out some of the ham radio vids on YT..there are some VERY creative people out here!
@SoCalPreppers Thanks. I had hoped the comments section would also be a resource for me AND anyone who came along and saw this video later. You have given that a great start!
why didint you ask me... I have all that stuff I weoul have gladly sent you!!!
Lemme know if you are gonna go for your general and or extra.... I still have all the guide, and audio stuff... best of luck on the test...
Honestly the best thing you can do is take practice tests online... check out QRZ d o t com, they have a pretty good one, also hamradioexam d o t com is good as well.
@SoCalPreppers Thanks for the offer and the advice bro. I am, in fact, going "all the way" to Extra. I don't know the time frame, but will keep you in the loop.
way to go!!! keep on it!!! :)~lisa
