Also have been through the horrors of Effexor XR addiction and withdrawal! Was upped to 450 mg a day, and have been off totally for a year now. Thank you for your honesty and openness about this subject. I still can't talk about it alot, as I still can't totally believe that I went through all of that pain and torture. And what it did to my family.....
I'm glad I was only on 37.5 and did quit cold turkey, however agree with your view of not doing it that way, however I think the bigger problem for me at least was the inability to think clearly after 2 years of stopped use. Still twitching in my sleep, not being able to comprehend anything and forgetting my head if it wasn't attached as well as constant blurred vision. This is a horrible drug people do not allow yourself to be put on this stuff without putting up a fight.
My V.A. nurse practisoner just prcribed this stuff..No way i am going to get hooked on these pills..Thanks to youtube and being able to find out how others feel...I am just going to deal with life as it is..
weird.. I never had any withdrawal symptoms..but I was sure fucked up while on it..so maybe my subcontious mind was just soo happy I stopped :P Hope you are well now and dont need any crappy medication anymore :)
you seem amazing, your style is so cool, I really found this advice useful, I really dont feel the benefits of the meds and I sleep on the medication, I am going to try your way too come off them, I'm also on quetiapine and i am not sure if it is helping or not
...the main difference between my method and otiamaria's method is i am not transferring to another antidepressant. another difference is i'm doing it alone. i don't trust my (former) doctor any more than i trust my dog. actually, i trust my dog a whole lot more.
i advise anyone else to, if they possibly can, use her method, not mine.
...and my minor symptom is brain zaps (you effexor fans all know what those are, i'm sure) when i happen to let the 1/3 capsule vary on the low side. i don't count the littel time pills exactly, maybe i should.
i can tell by what happens when i take this slightly low time pill count that i am going to have to decrease the dose VERY slowly, like otiamaria says.
after seeing this video i know she's right. you (and i) should reduce the dose VERY gradually...
i'm at 25 mg/day effexor ER (actually, generic equivalent). i do this by opening the capsules and dividing the "tiny time pills" inside in to roughly 3 parts and using 1 part each day.
i detoxed from 3.5mg/day xanas AND effexor (from 225mg/day to this 25mg/day) over a 2.5 month period of sheer hell.
my major symptom now is an extreme case of heartburn that never ends despite using antacids and omperazole (after 4 days of the latter)....
going from 225mg to 150 mg doing it alterate days withGP support, its giving me headaches and pains that even 4 (30 x500 co codamol) tablets are only dulling .i am having problems with my balance and it feels like i have a really bad cold.Havent been out the house for 4 days, cant remember the last time i slept,i think i have slept, must have at some stage, have to keep going to get off them , this isnt me i dont like how i feel
@otiamaria that's rediculous, here's two more drugs to get off 1 drug. Drug dealers, legal drug dealers. I did cold turkey on effexor. That drug made me not care about anything. It made everything worse. Depresion meds is a scam, no one knows the cause of depression. Guinea pigs
I stopped 150mg cold turkey. Terrible, terrible few days but I just wanted off, I didn't want to drag it out over months. BTW. Your advice of starting effexor again after you have gone through withdrawals is wrong. If you have gotten over the worse of the withdrawals (approx 1 week) don't go back on them. Put them behind you for good.
@20bcosmo Please taper off slowly. Google Effexor withdraw . Going to 75 mg for 5 days then off is TOO FAST! The worst comes about a month after you quit.
My doctor doubled my Effexor and never booked a new appointment... I have now nagged my psychiatrist for three weeks about a new appointment with my doctor... I just want to get off Effexor since it hasn't helped me at all. It's turned me into some zombie... Hate it. When I forget to take my Effexor for two days I get all withdrawal symptoms at once. Once again: I hate this drug!!
I stopped Effexor from 150 to zero and now i'm on the end of day #3
Right now the “brainbuzz” i have is really more intense then day #2. Symptoms are that, and headache, low energy and i need to punch someone.. lol But i hang on and try to keep in mind that its gonna go away, its only a “miss my dose” withdrawal like i would have for any other stuff that i got my body use to. If i'm right, Its gonna be hell for 7 days and get better little by little after that. Gotta focus on positive things to.
First of all, never tell people to supplement one medication for another. MORE PILLS IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER. I am 37 years old and up until 3 years ago I had been on some sort of anti-dep since I was 13. Effexor XR is highly effective but coming off of it is like quiting crack. The only thing that worked for me was to open the capsules, split up the beads and gradually take less beads. I believe it took me 1 week to come off of it successfully. (doing it that way)

Quitting benzos is also difficult. Definately use the ween down technique, instead of cold turkey. Good job.

@bullfrog11758 5htp, tyrosine and carnitine worked so well for me. Much better than effexor, prozac and pristique.

@Hayrob14 BTW- Prozac has enough problems within itself, without adding it to an already problematic situation. You might want to switch doctors.
