Remember, kittens wont stay as kittens forever, and this film took 4 years to make (1981-1985), so they went through quite a number of cat and dog actors since none of them will stay as little young puppies and kittens.

That is why you see alot of changes in the appearances of Milo and Joyce's kittens, the same thing applies for when Milo's eye color change throughout the film where there are close up scenes of him.

I never said that any of the animals here in the film died.

I am just saying that the animals were growing older and older as this film took 4 years to make (1981-1985), and because alot of key, pivotal scenes in the movie take place while Milo and Otis are young, they switched up the dog and cat actors.

That scene where Milo is getting washed down the river rapids? They went through about half a dozen kittens trying to get those shots, the unco-operative little buggers kept on drowning. Back in those days there was less concern for animal rights.
