Nice! So, this kind of thing didn't start in 1993. I was a Porterian from 88-92. During that time someone started a "smoke in" - I still have a flyer for it. Meet at McHenry on a Friday and smoke. Hundreds showed up for the first one, then it waned. "420" as a term appeared at Porter in 1988 when a bunch of surfer dudes from Marin County showed up and used it ALL THE TIME. No one even knew what they meant. Within 2 years someone had painted "420" on every traffic sign in Santa Cruz.

a little history for you kids ;) 420 started in 1993 (my freshman year) in front of mchenry library. a local paper (the fishwrap i think?) published some article about how the cops used to drive by and wave to us (which they did). then it got busted and moved to the quarry. then at some point it moved to the meadow.  but its so good to see that some things never change! and that santa cruz is still as beautiful as i remember it. enjoy it kids. its over too soon.

No it's not. This doesn't represent the majority of students of UCSC. While a lot of them are students there are a lot of alumni and townies as well. Also some of the people there weren't even smoking pot. There is music, some people bring food, it's like a festival so some just go to watch. At 4:20pm you can see more people taking pictures of the smoke than people actually lighting up.

I'm a student at UCSC and don't smoke pot and know a lot of people who don't either. That said I still think 420 is an amazing event where people gather and have fun. They are not hurting anybody and are enjoying themselves. (though it is not appreciated when they smoke in the dorms as it stinks up the halls), but the meadows are a nice open area to keep the smoke from bothering too many people. I hope it always exist as a peaceful fun event in the meadows
