  • When Paul told the church in Ephesus to "speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs", this was and is an exclusionary command. He was specific in his use of "speak". This would exclude "play", "strum", "strike", or other term not specifically employing the voice. A song book cannot "speak". A trumpet, guitar, drum, harp, or any other instrument can "speak". Thus Instrumental music was not practiced in the New Testament church. It was not practiced again until a few hundred years.

  • heh I am really bored anyone wanna play and have fun

  • not about whether or not they are out of tune.........just listen too the powerful words

  • Oh my dear!

  • what's with the random cymbals?! why can't we keep these songs a capella?

  • This was the worst rendition of this beautiful hymn I have every heard.

  • @Nubber so out of tune on the chorus

  • @Aquoy16 But my point is, the verses you cited are not commands against using instruments in worship. That's my point. Can you show me in the New Testament where it explicitly says instruments are NOT to be used in worship? The reason I cited Revelation was because I always hear Church of Christ members saying there's nothing mentioned in the New Testament about instruments and that's not true.

  • @Aquoy16 The scripture references you cited above do indeed support singing hymns and spiritual songs, but just because instruments aren't mentioned in those verses doesn't mean instruments are forbidden in the New Testament. None of those verses you cited issue a warning against using instruments in worship. Refer to Revelation 5:8; Revelation 14:2; Revelation 15:2 if you don't believe instruments are mentioned in the New Testament.

  • I was raised Acapella and find shape note eaiser to follow. We are told in the New Testament to worsip in Spirit and in Truth which only you and God know if you are. Are you a "Social" Christian or go out of habit? Hopefully the majority are there to Celebrate Comunion, Edify one another and Worship together. In Revelation There are Harps in Heaven. In Jude 1:9 It says (paraphraised for space check ur Bible)But when Michael the archangel did not judge the devil but said The Lord rebuke you!

  • @Aquoy16 - I somewhat understand what you're saying, but in the same right isn't the talent that plays those istruments given SOLEY and ONLY by the grace of GOD. He is the reason we have the talent, God gave it to us when he created us, and to use our talent to praise and worship Him would hardly be sinful.

  • I just happened to run across this video, and began reading some of the comments. Is this a portal into the Twilight Zone? Nobodiy's interpretation of the Bible is the only one. You won't know what the scriptures actually say unless you read the original documents, anyway. They were not in English, and there are none of the originals around. So you know only what someone has translated the Bible to say, with your added interpretation. God might tell you to just shut up. Listen.

  • do we have originals about alexander the great? or plato?

and since nobody's interpretation of the Bible is the only one, then you'd hafta agree that your claim goes for everything out there. Its "up to the person who interprets it."

so I interpret your comment here to support the Bible and say Go God!

  • You got it right. I support all scripture, but not all interpretations. We interpret all things at our own level of understanding. The danger comes in trying to impose our interpretation on others, especially without considering their point of view.

  • its just you

  • WHO IS THE DIRECTOR

  • we sang this in a choir im in n we blow the top off of it yall was ok

  • who is the orignal artist of this song

  • text by horatio spafford (1873) and music by philip bliss (1876)

  • Psalm 150:3-6 that's all I have to say 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet praise him with the harp and lyre,4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

  • Ever read Hebrews 1. David also cheated on his wife. Is fidelity in order? Remember what happened on the mount and dude wanted to build 3 altars one for moses, one for was it david who knows and one for the son and God said naw-Jesus is my son whom I am well pleased hear ye him. So, what does Jesus say. Start in John 1 then go to Hebrews 1 then answer the question about worship using what God said.

  • Psalm 150:3-6 is a great example of the LORD telling us to praise him with our voices and instruments. However in your example, There are many places that God tells us NOT to commit adultery or worship anyone but him. Can you give one verse that says NOT to use instruments, after here we are commanded to do so? No where in psalm 150:3-6 do I read "if you want to". God will not contradict his own word. I dont see this in John, Hebrews, or Colossians.

  • I guess what you saying makes since if David and God were the same people. And if David had instruments in the Temple. Every denominational leader fought against instruments in the church. As u say God don't contradict. But have u ever read the scripture- A new commandment I give unto you. If God tells u to do something He does NOT have to retell u in a not. Watch when u play with words and try & get God in a catch 22. Silly rabbit trix are for kids.

  • Are you saying the words in Psalm 150 are not God's, but Davids? God is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Heb. 13:8. God commands us to praise him WITH instruments. There is no scripture that "retells" us to not.

  • Precious. You know it is a sin to change God's word. this is what hebrews 13:8 says-8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. But if you keep reading in the same chapter verse 15 you will see this-Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. And if God told you to praise him with instruments then there should be as many instruments as there are people in the congregation.

  • Yes it does say "Jesus Christ", but we both know that Jesus=God. But that IS in fact the translation (JC). But that still doesn't nullify the commandment in Psalm 150. Read Leviticus 25:9, or Jos. 6:9, and ESPECIALLY 2Sam 6:15. All of these are examples of God's people using trumpets to praise Him. And you still can't answer my question: Can you show ONE scripture or parable that rescinds the command to praise God with instruments? please show me if one exists.

  • I certainly dont think God would tell us to do something, then change his mind without letting us know. God is not the author of confusion. So please, if you can't find the scripture to support your belief, then don't just hold on to what your pastor or minister told you. Man is fallible, let the word and the Holy Spirit be your teacher. Not a pastor who is able to make mistakes. And again, scripture will show forth the truth, we cant hold to doctrine that isn't supported by scripture.

  • Oh, and when God says "a new commandment" That is not negating the old. Rather it is parallel with the old. Christ did not come to abolish the law but to uphold it.

  • Do yourself a favor and go talk to your minister and pastor. Cause you need to sit down and study with someone who knows more than you and who you respect. Cause we could talk about this all day, but until you have a firm understanding of the word of God it is impossible to talk.

  • I would also like to say that I hope you don't feel i'm being rude in any way. I feel as brothers and sisters in Christ we aught to be able to discuss biblical doctrine together so that we may all be of like mind in Christ. I don't claim to know all truth and I am happy to say I am wrong when the scripture proves me to be. In all of this, I just see so many passages where were told to use instruments and have yet to find one that says NOT TO, or ONLY use your lips.

  • We lived by law in the old testament, but by grace in the new testatment. So what you are saying is, all that was established in the OT is null and void? Keep in mind that alot of instruments of today had not been invented yet, so how could there be any mentioning of them. Since we're on it, the N.T.; never mentioned anything about electricity and microphones either, yet I bet the COC has lights,mics,&A/C. Don't you think you need to stop using those since it is not mentioned in the NT?

  • Why do you have to argue over the details? Isn't it enough that you both believe in the same God? Jesus loves you whether or not you use instruments in your church.

  • Just making a point, and you are right!

  • you have to read history to get this. but all denominations refused instruments into the WORSHIP experience until about the 1700's and there were plenty of instruments in the day of God. what makes your point not that weighty is that lights, mics and AC are not elements of worship. so read Col 3:16, Rev 22:18 and Hebrews 1. That will help you put this in perspective. We don't do God a favor by doing our thing. He don't need our help. Just do what he says.

  • I read the passages you suggested and found no evidence that even remotely hints that we are not supposed to use instruments when praising God.

  • do those passages remotely suggest that you should. In using the phrase not supposed to would suggest that it is ok to do it. But a year ago I cared today. i don't so much. If u wanna use spoons to offer praise enjoy. When the saints of God realize that worship is not about them instruments become a non issue. Bigger than all that is that u love one another. So, if u hating whether u play an instrument or not u hell bound.

  • if you say that instruments shouldn't be used in church because of a lack of examples in the new testament, then i guess it is safe to say that i shouldn't read my bible, since its never technically mentioned in the new testament, and there are no literal examples.

  • What about choir? Would'nt you walk out of the church saying "Wow, that choir was good"?

  • No, because the church is meant for everyone to sing to the Lord, not just a 30 person choir. Listening to a 30 person choir will make you say "Wow, that choir was good"?

  • I agree. I don't think instruments are a bad thing. As a matter fact God encouraged the use of instruments through out the Bible. So, for anyone to say that it disregards his holy name is wrong in my opinion. God gave us talents and he wants us to use them to glorify him. And, some people do that through worshipping Christ with them. :) Like me, for instance.

  • Those are examples of the old testament. Now, I'm not saying the old testament isn't relevant to us, it gives us an example of how God is patient with us and how He gives us so many chances and how God created us and the messiah coming. But the new testament is our new law, and its what we have to follow now. The new testament states to make music in your heart. Heart, in greek, means to strum the heart strings, not guitar strings. Now bottom line, there is no example of instruments in the N.T.

  • I don't know what Bible you have been reading, but they are all up to interpretation. You see things one way, while I see it another. I'm not saying your wrong and I'm right, because honestly who knows who's right?! But, bottom line here is that if we are given a talent we should use it to honor and glorify God. The NT isn't our "new law" it's what we should base our lives off of, but there are good lessons as well in the OT, so I don't quite understand where you can factor that in there.

  • The New testament is our new law. In greek it says it is the new covenant: the new law. Thats what "testament" means.

  • Some of the greatest insights to what/who God wants us to be resides in the OT along with ways to better ourselves and to trust fully in him. Psalms for example is a prime example.

  • even though theres no example of specific uses of instruments in the NT you can't say that the use of them was supposed to cease. Also what about the many uses of trumpets in Revelation? The bottom line is if you do or do not use instruments make sure that God gets all the glory!

  • My church does give God the glory even without instruments. But one thing to know about Revelations is that a lot of things in their are symbolic. Like how it talks about hell, it says their is fire but the fire is a symbol meaning there will be horrible, horrible torment like we have never felt before. Now if you want to use instruments in the church, then go ahead, that is why God made free will. I am just trying to tell you all the truth and save you guys. Please think about what I have said.

  • I understand and have been faced with the question before. I guess we're going to have to agree to diagree on that one but as for "saving" those that believe there's nothing wrong with instruments I am going to have to saythats crazy I don't believe that it at all affects our salvation. That's just a bit crazy... whew I'm glad you or no other human has a heaven or hell to put me in!In the end methods and/or styles mean nothing but what's in your heart and your walk will make the difference!

  • do you go to the church of christ?

  • Yes, I do.

  • i knew it, i can spot a church of christ member by what they write. COC members and Jehovahs witnesses r the only people who have a problem with instrumental music. why do you think instrumental music is soo bad, does it really do harm to the soul???

  • Read all the comments I have written in the past and you will understand why.

  • Sorry I was on my brothers account by accident there. Go back and read all the comments I have written in the past and you will understand why.

  • well all i can tell you is that the argument gets us no where, we have to learn to prove things that are way more important. people like music b/c it makes them feel good, its what they want to hear. they dont really care about god and what he may think. they like instruments because it gives them a feeling. it makes them feel good, they dont care if there are no examples in the new testament that show Jesus and a drum, they only base music on feeling.

  • So, are you agreeing with me that instruments should not be in the church or disagreeing.

  • He must be agreeing. Cause there is no way some one says they really dont care about god it just makes them feel good like this name it and claim it preaching with no accountability.

  • I am a member of the church of christ and I love instrumental music, I like donnie, marvin sapp all that and more. However, during worship God tells us how to. Col. 3:16. see if we do what we want to do why not have oxtails during communion or better yet let's have a fashion show during church instead of a sermon. You right there are greater issues to discuss like how to be saved. cause when you in the right place you gone do the right thing. Whn u in the wrong place you gone do it wrong.

  • Well, if u read historical documents on instrumental music in the church-Martin Luther, One of the popes et al.- All of them were opposed to instrumental music in the church. See what we do is say oh this won't hurt or this is ok or we don't have to like somebody to love them, then we say God ain't tell u to be no fool or we have free will-All this non scriptural stuff and then wonder what is the big deal. Well, here it is If you love ME keep MY commandments.

  • Some folks have a talent to play football. Which part of the worship service should we pull out the pig skin. or should an accountant just start counting money in the middle of service or a counselor start counseling. maybe we should add a quilting bee to the order of worship.

  • you all need to stop arguing over your differences and rejoice in the fact that you both love Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour who came to this earth to take away the sins of men. Stop bickering like fools, and just give glory to God that people have a desire to praise God. instruments, or no instruments. Man up and act like the saints of God you aspire to be!

  • ok...so if you've ever worshiped with music and singing...you get a feeling that you don't get unless you have music...and music is what brings me closer to God...and if God gives me that connection, and that wonderful feeling...why would He tell me not to do it...He wouldn't do that to you. and besides, i think that music is the voice of God. and He wants to be with us.... i mean if music brings us closer to Him, don't you think that he'd want us to have music in our lives?

  • I'm saying instruments shouldn't be used. You can have music in your life. The truth is using instruments on the first day of the week in church is wrong. It takes our minds off God. I've been told by a family in my church that when they went to worship while they were on vacation, they went to a church where the people were getting up from the pews and running up and down the isle because of the instruments being used. And they did the right thing not to go along. Is that what God wants?

  • With instruments, you will walk out of the church saying, "Wow, that band was good." That will make you forget why you even go to church in the first. You don't go to church to hear the band playing, you go there to praise God, to sing with your voice, not instruments. Also, you go to hear a great sermon and partake the Lords supper. Instruments just take your minds off God because you are fixated on the sounds the instruments are making.

  • @253169 it's all in your mindset, if you're distracted by instruments, that's personal. It's not your place to say that for everyone. David played a harp to worship the Lord. Why is the sound of instruments not distracting but singing isn't? It takes just as much work to sing on pitch then to play an instrument

  • So if your church disregards the old testament then do you follow the ten commandments?

Jesus said that we should use our talents to praise him. If my talent is to play an instrument then I believe that it is an acceptable way to praise Him.

The old testament is still relevant today, that's why it's in the bible. The only thing that changed when Jesus came to live on this earth is the ceremonial law (the one given to Moses, like the sacrificing of animals), however the rest is still relevant.

  • We follow the 10 commandments b/c they are in the new testament. But, we cannot practice or follow Old Testament teachings b/c they preexist Jesus. Hebrews states that if the old testament was faultless then there would have been no need for a new.

  • as far as I know the 10 commandments found in the old testament - Exodus chapter 20

  • Correct. I should of said the 10 commandments are found in both the old and new testaments. However, in the new testament, they're not listed, but rather stated throughout different books.

  • Its a good song. The Cymbals and Instruments ruined it. Heres the truth everyone, its not good to use instruments in the church O.K. Heres is a verse from the Bible for you all, "I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding."

    — 1 Corinthians 14:15

  • What the point of giving a scripture that doesn't support your statement.

  • What, pray tell, does this one verse of scripture...taken out of context, have to do with not having musical instruments in Church? You must be Church of Christ.

  • Puibassman, I am a Church of Christ Christian. And if you don't like that, verse here is another: "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spirituals songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.-Ephesians 5:19. This verse means to make music in heart, to just sing hymns to Him, not from an instrument. Also, our example of Christ church is in the new testament scriptures. There is no mention of the early Christians using instrumental music in the new testament.

  • I take it you've never read Psalm 150...Praise Him in the firmament of his power. Praise Him for his mighty acts: Praise Him according to his excellent greatness. Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: Praise Him with the psaltery and harp. Praise Him with the thimble and dance: Praise Him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise Him upon the loud cymbals: Praise Him upon the high sounding cymbals....",etc... God accepts all praise that comes from the heart.

  • That is the old testament band1163. If you read the new testament, you will know that God only wants you to make melody in our hearts. To "strum the heart stings" in you. The new testament is our new law God gave to us. That is why its called the "New Testament." Now I know they praised God with instruments in the Old testament, but they also sacrificed animals as well. The New testament Christians never used instrumental music in their worship. That is why the New testament is what we follow.

  • yea ephesians 5:19 says "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spirituals songs. Sing and make music in YOUR heart to the Lord.

where does it say we can't use instraments

  • There is no example in the new testament that the Christians used instruments in worship. If there is no example of it, we should not do it. Also, if you know a verse in the new testament that says we can use instruments in worship, please share it with me. And yes, David did play a harp, but was David gathering on the first day of the week to worship the Lord?

  • yea but just because its no their does not mean we cant do it i mean there is no verse that says we cant either

  • ( sorry my batries in my keyboard were dead)

yea just there is no verses that says we can however here are no verses tjat say we can't either.

  • But their is no example that says we can use instruments. And like I said before, if their is no example of it in the bible, don't do it. It is the same as bringing an arcade or Starbucks in the church. There is no example of that, so we shouldn't do it. We need to go by the examples the bible gives us, and using instruments in the church is not one of them.

  • david played a harp

  • if he don't like that verse he can and will go to hell. cause God dont need his approval. And you don't need 8 verses to concur with the truth. Jesus only needs to say it one time to be right. and furthermore if it don't say to do it it don't have to say not to do it to be wrong. Go home does not mean go to your friend's house then go home. Sit down does not mean stand up til I say sit down again. Our thoughts are not his thoughts.

  • tell me this why do you think that instraments should not be used and please explain to me how you get that you should not use intraments form that verse.

  • Wow, this is one of my favorite hymns. It always moves me to tears. But this time it was for a different reason. Sorry guys, whoever did the arrangement ruined it for you. Some things don't need to be tweaked, just leave well enough alone.

  • poor version of a great song

  • go BSU!!!!!!!!! this is my school!!! hats off to the BSU choir, etc. a lil pitchy, but good.

  • God Bless! Very Nice job and i really appreciate it!

  • AGH! such a pretty song...but sooo hard to hear this way...sorry guys, the cymbals make it hard to listen to and whats up with the middle of the piece?

  • The cymbals are a bit much however the Bible says to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. As long as it pleases God then its beautiful to my ears! Good job.

  • Did they purposely sing it out of tune?

  • how do you purposly sing out of tune...lol

    you tried that one... lmbo

  • I"ve got to be honest folks - I love this song, and you just ruined it!! I"m sure you mean well, but I'm not going to sleep for a week now. This should come with a warning - not for those with functioning ears!

  • the cymbals got on my nerves...other than that BEAUTIFUL!

  • this song is really hard to get just right in a choir it took me like 2 weeks so good job

  • I LOVE THIS VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I love this one! BEAUTIFUL! Nice harmony and coordination. KEEP IT UP!
