Rick Barry was DEADLY...This dude is one of the Greatest most under celebrated players EVER...Slick Rick was the Shiznit...Loved the way he shot freethrows.
Check out Terry Pluto's book Tall Tales and read the story on the chapter on Wilt And The Warriors for the story: Wilt's Bodyguard(as if he needed one) about Al Attles and why he was known as "The Destroyer"
I remember attending a basketball camp in the summer of '74 and Al Attles was one of the guest celebrity coaches. During a question-and-answer session, Attles, when asked about the prospects for the coming season, replied that his hope was the Warriors would at least be competitive. Well, now, were they ever!!
...barry couldn't be guarded, he averaged 41 per game in the 67 finals against the toughest front line ever, wilt, lusicious jackson and chet walker, billy cunningham the sixth man couldn't break into the starting front line combo...
'74-'75 was a great year for the Warriors and the only great year for Al Attles. Otherwise, he was a terrible coach. All of us who lived in San Francisco back then thought he just didn't coach well. He gave away so many of the Warriors best players. I'd say Frankly Muely was an awful owner as well. The Warrios should have had many more championships under their belt. But bad management did them in prematurely.
I don't know if agree about your evaluation of Al Attles, but I do agree about Mieuli, he may be the worst owner in all of professional sports to ever somehow manage to win a championship.
I watched every minute of all four games of the 1975 championship series. The Warriors' stunning sweep of the Bullets was one of the biggest upsets in sports history. The Warriors did it with outstanding teamwork and the incredible clutch play of Rick Barry. The Warriors' victory over the Bulls in the Western finals, however, was a much more exciting series. Many thought the Warriors would have nothing left against the Bullets, but they were wrong!
I just wanted to hear Bill King's voice. We miss ya Bill..!!! I used to sit in my grandmothers livingroom as a child in the early 80's and listen to Bill King and Lon Simmons do the Oakland A's games. His voice narrorates my life..! Even in his last years he could still capture the moment... i swear at the ned of his last season i heard him say... "And the Athletc's bats have come back from the dead, like Lazarus". I fell off my chair.
I don't know how many A's games I listened to when Bill King and Lon Simmons were commentating. KSFO 560! I think that I enjoyed listening to the games on the radio as much as I did watching them on channel 36. Good times. God Bless you, Bill. You were the best. :)
the all time team is power forward pettit, small forward barry, center russell, point guard magic, shooting guard, jordan
if barry wasn't such a flaky fool and didn't jump leagues for nearly five full seasons he would've wound up first in nba scoring ahead of jabbar...barry couldn't be guarded, he averaged 41 per game in the 67 finals against the toughest front line ever, wilt, lusicious jackson and chet walker, billy cunningham the sixth man couldn't break into the starting front line combo...
The year the Warriors won it all, the priciest seat in the Oakland Coliseum Arena (referred to as the Golden Circle) was seven dollars. The next year, realizing that they had a product to sell, they jacked the prices -- all the way to eight dollars!! Those were the days.
That wasn't the case in the 1970's. There were fewer teams back in 1975. The NBA Champs are always considered World Champions. And why don't you use some punctuation. A lack of capital letters is horrible. And so is your "F" word.
Dude: as of 1975, the US national basketball team had lost only ONE GAME in history -- by one point on a notoriously blown call. And before 1984, our national team was a bunch of college kids that would have been massacred by the NBA champs. So even though the Warriors didn't win a global competition, it is beyond argument that they were the best team on earth. And I agree with blazer79 that bad language does not improve a bad argument.
Well, actually, no. They had left the City a couple of years earlier. By 1974-75, they were playing all their home games in Oakland, the only reason they played the finals at the Cow Palace was that no one dreamed that the Warriors would still be alive at finals time, so the Coliseum booked the Ice Capades.
I'm a grown man now and to this day I have NEVER seen another forward who could match Rick Barry's intensity and scoring/shooting prowess ! I'll take Rick's tempwer over some players lackadaisical "I'm gettin' paid" attitude.
Ariamaluum's comment about Larry Bird was a reponse to Dwaynne63's comment about Rick Barry being the most intense and finest shooting forward in NBA history. Make sure to check out all the comments before you make an aggressive one of your own.
Sad to watch some of this, knowing that both Phil Smith and Derrek Dickey died within the past couple of years. Smith's driving dunk over Elvin Hayes in the first game was the moment when everyone thought, "Hey, maybe we can play with these guys!" Made the Bullets think, too.
Agreed! Seven games, against a very tough team. Van Lier and Sloan at guard, Bob Love and Chet Walker at forward, and aging Nate Thurmond (an all-time Warriors great, traded the year before) at center. Surprising, tough series win by the Warriors, and assumed to be the end of a good season, as the Warriors certainly had no chance against the Bullets.
Absolutely! And the Bulls had five all-star quality starters: van Lier, Sloan, Thurmond, Love, and Chet Walker, though Nate was slowing down after 12 years.
"In and out, Heartbreak!" Bill King was such a great announcer for the Warriors. I listened to him on the radio through the 60s, and it was almost as good as watching. Nice guy, too.
"In and out, heartbreak!" No offense intended to Chick Hearn or Marv Albert or even Johnny Most, but Bill King was the best radio basketball announcer ever.
I don't know anything about basketball, but I have decided to follow the Golden State Warriors on their quest for the elusive NBA title. Correction, they've actually won an NBA title in 1955-56 when they were the Philadelphia Warriors. They also won one when they were the Golden State in 1974-75. That's just great. I wish I was there to congratulate them, but I was yet to be even an idea at that point. The last 12 years they've missed the playoffs. That makes me smile.
Warriors over Bullets 1 of the bigger upsets in NBA History.

Is that Hal Holman taking pictures at 2:53 to 3:05 in the background? He's an amazing photographer. Can't believe he got that close to the court.

I was a fan of the Bullets, but the Warriors
wore them out with great team play and a deep
bench. Rick Barry was fantastic and never gets enough credit for his skill as a good
passer. Those were some great times for the
NBA. Thanks for posting this video.

there were just 23 teams back then. but given their was not a collection of bb talent in 1 league at this
level of talent, it is safely assume they are the best. unless u have substance to show otherwise. fess up.
