@littlerudegirrrrl Byzantium was an ancient Hellenic city founded in '667 b.c.' after Byzas from Megara. The term 'Byzantine Empire' is the name the German historian Hieronymous Wolf gave to the christianized Eastern Roman Empire a hundred years after the fall of Constantinopel, in order to distinguish the Medieval Hellenic history from the Ancient Roman one.
This is a old faroeese song about a Viking chief that made faroe island christian and was murded by a nother Chief called trøndur that belived in the old ASE (Odin & Thor)
@theinmortal6 The original chorus in old norse is this: Noregs menn, dansið væl í stillum; stillið tykkum allar, riddarar, Noregs men, dansið væl í stillum.
In english it is something like this Norways men dances very stylish Stylish, thinks every one Knights, Norway's men Dances very stylish
@theinmortal6 If you wonder, the song is about the Norwegian overtaking of the Faroese Islands. Sigmund being a christian supporting the Norwegian King and the pagan Trondur supporting Faroese Independence from Norway. That the Norwegians dance in the chorus is maybe because they celebrate they took control over the Faroese Islands
@MClegitCraftThatSht I'm not from Nordic countries, but have to say that there are lots of common words within Old English language (Britain in 10th or 11th century) and current Dutch language (Netherlands and Belgium). These two sound so similar!!! By this example i want to say that some languages are still comprehensible despite that there is a gap of centuries between them.
@theinmortal6 no, it's sung in a mixure of Faroese and Norwegian.
the story is about the most famous viking battle in Faroese history, which aftermath of which sealed the faith of the Faroe islands, where the islands fineally gave themselves to be under the Norwegian crown.

that looks like swords, i don't think it is a monument: it is a matter of perspective - the camera angle is aimed upwards, extremely close to the swords[with a wide lens, or w/e i am not an expert on cameras]
It's a monument. It's the three giant swords at Hafrsfjord, marking King Harald's victory and the collection of the western counties into Norway(what is today eastern Norway wasn't part of Norway at the time)
No problem! Also, I must state that they don't sing in old norse here, it seems they have norse elements- throwing in a nominative case ending here and there, but it sounds more like some archaic Norwegian dialect with some nynorsk thrown in. Being a student of old norse I suppose I would have recognized it if it was there :P
I think it´s the Faroese element what makes it sound so Norse. The song is based on Faroese ballad Sigmundskvæði yngra. It appears to me they have norwegianized the lyrics to some extent, but still kept them as close to the original Faroese as possible.
@Yarwer are you an imbecile? those swords were crafted from bronze and placed there for Harald Hårfagre (Fairheaded Harald) who united norway into one kingdom. you fucking fail.
Could someone tell us the lyrics of this music in english?
