I have definitely met people who talk like her, I call them grad students. I thought Nicholson's criticism was valid as she tried to dehumanize people intellectually while he dehumanized her personally and emotionally. There are many different kinds of intelligence was the point I understood.
@neckface1 not all grad students....but anyway she was acting agressive...it doesnt mean that shes a romantic by responding like that ...true it shows that people are just different. Whether it has to do with intelligence or mere experience. Man i love that part where nicholson says "where do you get the ass to tell anybody about class..." lol
Entertaining scene, but the Nicholson character turned out to be as cold and full of shit as the Ayn Rand-ish intellectual, so the movie was lose/lose in the end.
The intellectual played by Irene Dailey is hysterical. She is pompous and stuck up, yet you like her anyway. [ at least I do ] She reminds me of the writer Fran Lebowitz who also cracks me up.
Really, who talks like that woman? Who do you know that even comes close to being like that?
That's a little unrealistic, her character.
It's funny, cause most of the stuff she's saying is actually really obvious, she just uses big words and overexplains it haha.
I was just itching for Jack to say something.
It's funny how he goes "you pompuos celebate" like to show he is smart, but then he goes right back to the whole "You're full of shit" thing. Cause he's not trying to show off.
@heatbucspies55 Sorry pal but there are alot of people out there in the real world that feel like they know it all, and especialy when there get a bit of a crowd to paly it up a bit! Thats life i suppose, when you think you have it all worked out! BAM ! Some nice person comes along and turns it all on its head! Good seen tho! its a bit subjective! ;P
Man i think that Bobby Eroica Dupea was actually meant to be alone sometime to think things through. At leasts that is what i hope he was going to do after he went on that truck at the End of the movie.
This scene was laced with high-drama and comedy. I think it also shows the absolute contrast between Nicholson's character (Bobby) and the two women that inhabit his life through this story: (1) Rayette, by Karen Black (2) Catherine, by Susan Anspach. I like how after all the tension that goes through that Jack's character just stands up and speaks his mind, without worrying about the consequences in his own house. A+
"I said don't point at her, you creep. Where do you get the ass to tell anybody anything about class, or who's the hell's got is or what she typifies? You shouldn't even be in the same room with her, you pompous celibate!" The beginning of that is cut (my favorite lines)
I think these cold, "objective" discussions are aggressive... Love that line.. also love the way the director uses sounds in this scene.. the thunder, the dogs.. along with the frenetic camera movements and the lighting.. it's all really really well orchestrated.. this entire film flows like piece of music.
love this scene from the movie! what a great conversation that shows so many types of people in such a short time. I think Jack Nicholson's reaction is the best!
I love the way Jack shakes at the empty beer can before he launches into his tirade
