Playing a song by ear isn't automatic. You need to manually find every single key, and then memorize it. It is quite impressive, but I honestly do prefer to be able to sight read music.

MormonOtaku - i was actually trained classically, to be able to read music, sight-read, and interpret. thankfully my teacher also taught me theoretically, which allowed me to learn all this by ear. -Andrew

Well thats not entirely accurate, If the person has perfect pitch normally they only need to hear a song once to be able to play it back.

not necessarily...perfect pitch allows a person to recognize the pitch of the note without being told what note it is.but i doubt all perfect pitch ppl can hear a song once, then play it right back automatically. if you get what i mean?
