  • thank you kazu for posting this video! I started taking sumi-e classes last year. i started off with bamboo, then the orchid, and now the plum branch with blossoms. this art is so beautiful and simple, yet it is pretty hard to master! since becoming a student of sumi-e my appreciation for this art has greatly increased, now that i know how much discipline goes into each stroke of the brush... much love from hawaii

  • Hi BRADYHANSEN I think you were asking about kits earlier. I have seen kits in the Hobby Lobby and I'm sure that other art stores have them. There are different sized brushed made of different materials like goat hair, etc. Some include instructional books and exercises. Check out yanghaiying's channel and her website. I am putting a sumi-e kit on my Christmas wish list.

  • @spongebobnik dude that was three years ago.

  • is it possible to use a synthetic brush?

  • wow, it gave me goosebumps just watching that! beautiful painting :)

  • for some reason, I actually find it easier to use this type of media more than anything, mostly because its just so bold, and very expressive, although my college doesn't have those brushes, I have to make do with a normal one :[

  • damn i wouldn't be able to do that, so whether or not it's as good as some thought or not, that's awesome.

  • i dunno. you might surprise yourself. i do it every time!

  • There are many people from Asia that can do this.

  • Hello...Master... Me encanta Y ME GUSTARIA SABER COMO ESCOJER UN PINCEL....COMO¿

    excelente !!!!

  • what kind of brush would you use to paint a piece like this? soft, hard or mixed?

  • to be honest, this piece was not as good as i thought it was going to be. but that is my opinion and i think you are a very good artist.

  • Hello, I'm an American art student who has recently started taking interest in Sumi-e. I have read much about it and it has peaked my interest. Just last night I have come to buy my first Sumi Set.

Just, are there any helpful tips you can give to a beginner in the subject?

  • again, waw !

really nice to find that kind of short film on youtube, it's gonna help me a lot.

btw, what kind of paper are you using ?

i only have regular arche paper, for i am mainly doing some watercolors... do you think it can fit ?

anyway, thanks for sharing that with us !

  • Hello, I have noticed that a lot of people use the same brush when they are painting. I know there are different sizes but are these "kits" for beginners? Eventually are you supposed to get so you can use one brush like illustrated here??

  • hi, brady san

I don't think there are brushes that is specific for kids. There is very thin(or small)brushes, but it is for drawing a thin line.. When I am in the elementary school, we used the same size brush in a calligraphy class , as I use now.so,,,

  • Kazushimura san, I'm half japanese and I remember sumi e drawings at home when I was a child, now I find them so beautiful and elegant, I'll try my hands on this kind of drawing soon, Thank you very much for your videos! They are very beautiful!

  • hi, Thanks, take advantage of half of your blood ! :D

  • i have an art class coming up where we will be doing this

I am loking forward to it!

  • would it be disrespectfull to drill holes in the end of the brushes that do not have loops to add loops for hanging?

  • hi, it would not, i guess as long as have respect mind to your brush

    kazu

  • Beautifully felt and captured.. you have my respect.

  • The first stroke does it all, doesn't it? Very intuitive, I like it lot.

  • hi, agen1

you totally right, sorry for the video image are blurring,,, should make another take,

    and thanks radhau and mflash

they are flower of plum, it is very small buds..

  • Kazushimura, thank you for the art lesson. Very beautiful!

  • sorry, but i think it started to look bad after you added the leaves. if you just drew the tree bare, it would have looked alot better.

  • I believe they are not leaves, they are the flower buds, which is why they are small. They look just like my flowering plum tree buds in the Spring.

  • very nice. Have you ever heard of Hokushin Fugino? He did a calligraphy of the character "mu" for me some years ago when he was in Boston. It is one of my favorite pieces of art. Thanks for posting

  • his skills are very good. i am also a calligrapher(ist) and sometimes i cant even get all the hairs in the brush to go the way i want it to:)
