  • I just got an acoustic guitar and need to restring it for a left can I reuse the same strings and simply switch their placement or do I need to use new strings? I'm a beginner so I'm completely lost any help would be greatly appreciated thank you

  • @jclauss2005 If you're going to switch a righty guitar over to a lefty - you'd need to get a new nut for the instrument. The nut is the white block (usually made of bone, plastic or other materials, located just below the tuning gears - this is where the strings are aligned before the enter the fretboard) with 6 sized slots cut into it. You would want new strings for sure.

  • Great video. I'm a real novice at guitars here and this helped me restring my guitar with ease.

  • PLZ READ THIS HELP

    hi

i practice daily and keep my semi acoustic guitar in the cover for night(until i sleep) and it can extend up to morning and evening

coz i practice only in evenings

so my question is should i regularly tune and loosen the strings coz my dealer told me to do so regularly but some guys told me that you shouldnt coz its a matter of a day and you can keep the guitar tuned for days if you practice daily

so someone PLZ TELL ME SHOULD I TUNE DAILY AND LOOSEN THE STRINGS?or not?

  • @rockysikander You don't need to loosen the strings at night. You can leave them at pitch. Things not to do - don't leave your guitar out of its case during the winter months. Look into a humidification system during the drier months. Don't leave your guitar out near a heater, wood stove, vent, etc or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time...

  • That was the worst way I ever seen strings installed. Not even close to being right.

  • @bluegrasssingingman Hey - what do you consider the best way to re-string? Anything on youtube that you agree with? Seriously - not being sarcastic here just that I have seen loads of different ways. I have used this method but had also heard that you should never overlap the strings..

  • @Grecianite1 You don't knot the strings. Bronze 3-4 wraps. steal 6-8 wraps. You whined the strings. The lead first wrap under. The second wrap over. Knotted causes short life span, can cause funny harmonics, and cause strings to break. The over under you want a flat pinch. Not a knot, and when you whined the string add a little tension. By pulling the string back not up.

  • @Grecianite1 There are lots of ways to restring a guitar- the videos on our site are the ways that most of the musicians that work at D'Addario have used for years. There are a few versions that we've seen online that aren't quite what we'd agree with so that's why we decided to put up versions that we believe in.

  • THANK OU THANK YOU THANK YOU short simple and to the point all the other instructionals could not match this video. THANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!

  • hey, if I tune down the guitar to whatever low key, won't the string come loose at the through?

it just looks like it would come undone.

  • @zkagtrendy We make strings specifically for tuning down. It has a great deal to do with what key you planning on dropping down to - we make a set for DADGAD as well as Drop C and Drop D. If you're clever, depending on your tuning, you can have your guitar tuned to standard pitch and still allow for some amount of lowered tunings. There are numerous forums dedicated to this concept if you do a google search you can certainly find more in this regard

  • Many a time I have come close to pitching the whole guitar through my window in pure frustration at how many strings I was wrecking while trying to replace my strings.

I am completely new to replacing guitar strings, and after watching your video I have replaced all my strings in less than 10 minutes.

    Thanks so much :)

  • Wow! Been playing and changing strings for over 40 years .. this is easiest I've ever been able to do it .. I thought I knew what I was doing ... NOT! Thanks.. you can bet I'll be changing strings alot more often now .. 80)

  • Some bridge pins at slotted - in other words there's a slight notch in the pin - make sure that the string slides into that notch - then give the pin a slight turn so it locks down on the string. Does that help?

  • Hey guys, I'm having a problem here. Thing is my bridge peg won't stay there while I'm tuning the guitar, it always flies off. How can I make it stay in place?

  • @Trouter92 Nope. It shouldn't be a problem. But when restringing. Get them the same way so it will be easier for tune up and down for the next time

  • @Avranius I used scissors. Take it down to a shop. It might cast a quit a few bucks cause they might have to take the top to force the pin out from the bottom but it can be done. But it you can't get it out with any tool. Best idea is to take it down there or find out if there is some sort of guitar lub.

  • SPEAK UP!!!

  • can anyone help me? the pin at the motion won't come out. no matter what i do. its really frustration

  • I have been playing guitar for 25 years, I started out teaching myself so I was never shown how to restring a guitar I just kind of figured it out on my own. I just tried your technique and it was freaking awesome. So easy for 25 years changing strings has been an arduous process involving needle nose pliers. I was skeptical about the E & B strings staying in tune but they do, this was so easy I appreciate you putting this on YouTube, I wish YouTube and this video were around 25 years ago.

  • great video!

  • Hey guys, Im new to the guitar and i was wondering how to make sure that when you are winding the strings that it won't snap. When do you know when to stop tightening it?

  • @damnitshitz When restringing a guitar, the strings will need time to stretch after they are tuned to pitch, you stop when the string gets to pitch, after you are done pull on the string and repeat, this will make the string go "dead" then tune back up to pitch. repeat maybe 3 times.

  • fix guitar finish

  • @episodemp3 as others have commented here, he clearly says to loosen it. And when you refer to 'the videos above' there is only one video above, and if you watch and listen CAREFULLY instead of havng an episode at 0:25-0:28 you will see how to do it.

I wonder if you had used your opposable thumb and forefinger to do the job, would you have blamed your parents for making you?

  • what if the wire wont push in... it's lke stuck for me :(

  • great technique for tuning stability and pretty guitar takamine here :)

  • @paraspadez thanks man ;D

  • i'm really scared, that when i start to tight the string, it will snap. How do i know this will not happen?

  • @dikkedoperwt leave about 2 and a half inch length untightened before tuning the guitar. so that it will not snap and will tighten properly

  • Good instructions. Worked fine for me and Ive had a guitar a week (bought a second hand one). For novices, use common sense and watch the instructions several times.

Obviously if u pull it as tight as u can and then turn it anti clockwise and then tune it u should expect the string to snap!!!!!!

  • great video but im a bassist so i string my guitar like i do bass and without a key, if i had one than sure as hell i would use it.

  • I`ve been playing guitar for 45yrs. This is the way I restring all my guitars today , well except the Fender that have the hole in the post. The Pro Winder is great tool. Some years ago I was playing a guitar that was strung this way in the Video and I told a guy listening to my play that the guitar wasn`t strung right , it needed a wrap or two more around the posts. I`ve had to eat my words everytime I think about that.

  • I found this video VERY HELPFULL!!!

  • good video thanks helped alot

  • same thing happened to me episodemp3

  • same thing happenned to me episodemp3

  • Stringing a guitar is actually hard and can be very troublesome even to me and I've been playing for close to 5 years daily. I've never re-strung a guitar properly... I think because it can be so confusing and making a mistake means you have to go and buy more strings..

  • i hate restringing my guitar this is like my 5th time and i hate it snapping on my hand everytime i got 3 cuts on my left hand and a cut on my thumb if only guitar string's dont snap it be the best instrument.. well in my opinion

  • How do you know where to line up the strings over the saddle/bridge? On an electric you have slots in the saddles that the strings rest in, but the acoustic bridge is just one solid piece.

  • it strikes me that the sharp angle would make a stress point and break the strings easier. Could that be true?

  • wtf is a purr winder?

  • thx dude

  • Hi there. Great video - really clear. I linked to it from my blog acousticguitarbuyer as it's a great guide for beginners as to how to change strings.

  • I can't get the bridge pins out of this shitty old acoustic guitar. Tried to change the 10-12 year old strings this morning, was able to get them off okay (except one that broke right at the bridge, making it essential that I take the bridge pins out if I'm ever gonna be able to put new strings on) but I could only get one bridge pin off using a teaspoon for leverage... The others seem to be impossible to remove. This is a good simple explanation for novices though, good work.

  • This video really helped out. The "under-over" method helps keep the amount of string needed to a minimum. No more getting frustrated trying to wrap it around 4 or 5x and having it get loose! With this method you start with it pretty taunt already and just need to finish it off. Highly recommended.

  • I`ve been playing since 1965 I`m 59yrs old. I`ve been a Strat and Tele player most of the time and with those Fender tuners. But now I have a Gibson 339 and an acoustic I just strung up the acoustic and that method above doesn`t leave much wrap around the post. I`m from the old school and for me it was 3 wounds on the wound strings and 4 or 5 wounds on the bares. But I`ll try this way.

  • a little help guys? im having some trouble locking the strings, plus i did manage to get 2 strings replaced but im getting a buzz when i play them, any reason?

  • @MrIheartriseagainst The neck might be over bowed towards the strings making a hump in the neck. Look down it and see fi that's the case, if not it might be your action is too low, in which case you need a new saddle. Take it into a guitar shop and they'll do both if necessary. IF you put different gauge strings on it would cause different pull on the neck or if you put thicker on they're bigger and thusly closer to the fretboard.

  • @MrIheartriseagainst When I was trying to restring on my own I was getting a buzz, too. I think it was a result of how I was winding it around the peg (maybe it wrapped on a string and not the bare peg? Idk). Regardless, I followed this video to the "t" and it went away. Make sure you go under the string first then back over, also getting rid of a lot of the slack helped me. I would previous wind it around this thing like 4x cause I thought it helped. It is unnecessary if you do it this way

  • I watched a number of videos before I came avross this one. I like this method the best by far and used it. Thank you so much! Looks like a pro did it! Oh wait, it was me! haha

  • I am amazed at the guys who snapped strings after watching this video. I hope they use plastic knives and forks to eat with. OMG - those guys are dangerous if left in a room on their own!

The video? - well made! Thanks

  • Thank you, like I couldn't figure out how to take the fucking string off the guitar. My acoustic doesn't have bridge pegs so this was completely useless to me.

  • *ience, much like playing.

(a bug landed on my screen so when i tried to squish it my comment submitted early... Ha ha!)

  • This is a guideline people! Obviously it's gonna be different for everyone. It just takes patience and exper

  • lol my acoustic is a right bitch to restring... It doesnt have bridge pins you have to tie it up at the bottom (very hard with ball tip strings) also my tuning pegs are on the inside and with new stiff strings very tricky to wrap around. other than that though i could have guessed how to restring it myself and for those muppets not slacking the string well its pretty obvious that its going to snap dumbass

  • This is really VERY poor. Nothing about using the tool to remove the bridge pins if required and how to line them up with the neck.

No mention at all of leaving some slack to wind around the post.

Unless you are deliberately trying to make people break strings (then have to buy more) you should remove this and do a proper job.

  • great. I've just snapped it. thanks for not telling me to have it slack first. now i have to buy a new one.

    i hate you -.-

  • thanks dude

  • is it possible to restring a guitar with pegs with nylon strings that dont have a ball tip? >_>

  • Lmao! I've been playing for 6 years, and I've done just fine without a video. I watched this out of curiosity. The wrap around and underneath thing was helpful though. I've never done that, nor did I know that. Anyway, if you popped a string for whatever reason, don't blame this guy. That's your own fault. Laws of physics say if you pull something past it's threshold, it's going to break. Duh.

  • i just broke my E string. not enough explanation for beginners...

  • @juliannalopezzz Same, shit sux, brah.

  • i figured it out myself the first time i held a guitar..... this is for real NOOBS lol

  • @aakashba

Well LAH DEE DAH aren't you just the fucking greatest

  • @aakashba lol thats how it was for me XD

  • "incredible handy" I don't give a flying fuck about you trying to sell me your stupid Key thing. I'm a novice guitarist and you made me snap a string by your shit tutorial not telling me to loosen it first. What kind of guitarist would be watching this video apart from novices? Next time stop trying to sell a product and just do a proper step by step Just like the Video above.

  • @episodemp3 At 0:24-0:28 he says "turn it clockwise and loosen the string." I think you missed it.

  • @episodemp3 Nobody MADE you do anything... You're just trying to find somewhere to blame your ignorance and stupidity.

  • @episodemp3

LOL This is the funniest thing Iv read all day!! I hope all your strings break!!

  • @episodemp3 are you just stupid? That has nothing to do with being a guitarist, its just common sense. Also, the account name is "daddariostrings." Why would they put up this video for any other purpose but to advertise. If you don't like people advertising, you shouldn't be on youtube, or watch TV for that matter. By the way this video was essentially step by step, he just didn't site each step as "1, 2, etc.."

  • @episodemp3 what kind of idiot can't figure out basic tention....... go too school.

  • @episodemp3 IT's actually really handy, go change some strigns you'll see why. It's a string winder and but it means you don't need wire cutter as well, just one tool and strings.

  • @episodemp3 Same thing happened to me yesterday -.-'

  • @episodemp3 wow, that's a really weird comment. I think about 5 words in total were even related to the tool.... watch the whole first, then rewind and then try to follow. Don't ever follow instructions as you read them for the very first time.....read everything first...all these people who use the same sentiment "Don't try to sell me....." idiots. You can only be sold if you allow it. I don't have that tool but it does look damn 'handy'

  • Comment removed

  • @episodemp3 this is the most common way of stringing guitars. if u think its bad then ur an idiot or u just need to learn. and the pro winder is the most usefull restringing tool i have ever used in my life so stfu

  • @episodemp3 0:25 "turn it clockwise, and LOOSEN THE STRING!" OH MY GOD U ARE SO FULL OF SHIT! of course you snapped it if you are NOT watching the whole video! or maybe you don't pay attention..and by the way, even tho u missed the part with the loose, you should've though that the string was tightened! even if you don't play guitar you know this! dumb!

  • @episodemp3 Yeah dude fuck this video. I did exactly what this video showed and told me.

  • @episodemp3 You missed the first step of the video then...

  • @episodemp3 dude, he tells you to loosen it first...

  • @episodemp3

Hopefully this guy will watch a youtube demo of handgun loading and blow his head off.

  • would have been good if youd mentioned the need to gently stretch the strings beofre you tune.

  • was that tool really nesecary

  • @drgamingguru No, it's just incredibly handy. If you've got some metal cutters and lots of time you can do without.

  • i cant get the pin out

  • @louis952100 Get a pair of pliers, and gently twist the peg a little until it can be pulled out.

  • @louis952100 I know me too!!!! But,I think you need a tool for that.

  • i cant get the pin out! help

  • Dumass? Your So awesome dude. I challenge your hand over a tight wount string I can put on anyday of the week.

    See ya old timer!!

  • The Spin Doctor does a Better and faster job

  • @spindoctorwinder my hand does the same job as any guitar winder, dumass

  • Takamine G series cool those guitars are the best

  • tool with a tool. boo!

  • There is a much simpler way to do this..

  • i need to try this strings, y use jhonny wess cause then are cheap

  • Just followed this video and my D string. DONT LISTEN TO HIM!

  • I popped two Elixir strings and pricked my thumb. Restring FAIL @ Me =(

Now here I am rewatching this video.

  • @Broyale26 ah I just restrung mine with Elixir strings, and after watching this video. It went alright. Try again dude, and here's wishing it'll be fine.

  • @feelzie31

    Thanks, man.

About to go and get another set now.

  • this video costed me a set of strings, the way he says it adds a stress pt on the string and pops em every time

  • Excellent method of restringing a guitar! Thanks!

  • thanks a bunch man really use full

  • Thanks a lot, the 9 people who disliked this video were just retards who couldn't process what you had said in simple words into their minds.

  • @saibertempist

I agree with this guy. I've never done this before either and I got it right the first try. I also happened to have bought the same strings this company sells.

  • Thanks a bunch!

  • It's pretty pathetic that I've played for 7 years and still cannot ensure that I'll do this competently every time..I got the low E and the G and both were way too tight..then the 1st E string unwound in the tuning pin hole for some reason

  • Comment removed

  • This video was so helpful. Thank you so much for posting and sharing.

  • such a simple video yet fits in a few tips as well, im gonna try buy that machine head turner thingy :)

  • the damn bridge pins don't fit very well... seems the hole is too small... or the pins are too big. they go in quite a bit, but at one point, they stop going down and like, half an inch of the pin is still sticking out. any ideas guys?

  • I did this technique on putting the string on through the tuning hole the way he does on my low e string. I have the exact same headstock, but when I tune higher I have to rotate the tuning peg clockwise and not counter clockwise. I think I just put the string in the wrong side of the hole, if this is the case, is it going to be a problem?

  • @Nick56708

Yeah, you might want to take the string out and restring it again. That might lead to buzzing problems and tuning problems seeing how it wasn't mean to be like that.

  • @EvilBenson Alright then. Its going fine so far, no buzzing problems and tuning is fine for now but I guess its good to do it in the long run. Might just restring that string as soon as I can then.

  • oh there is a God! somebody actually knows the right way to interlock the string on the post!

  • Excellent video! Very helpful. Really speeds up the process. Thanks.

  • also... why did my high e-string snap when i was tuning it down....

  • @XxMurasamexX Did you figure that out?

because the same thing happened to me.

  • @shallwethen

the extra length should be the length from the first tuning post to the second.. well it works for me.....

and if you're asking about how my e-string broke... well the string is made of steel.. and they say that it wears down the wire... plus my old strings were really old...

  • what i can't get right is the number times it goes around the post.. u know that 3-4 times around it...

first time i tried... it was around 2 times around and it broke

second try... i succeeded. by watching one of the videos on youtube.. it gave me the right length of excess string so that it can go around 3-4 times... but that was for an electric guitar

would it be any different with steel acoustic

  • nice video. really helps alot. thanks.

  • Finally the RIGHT method to do it right! (With the proper string locking). All right!

  • if u get a pin stuck then go in the center and push upward with something durable like the side of scissors

  • thank...i was trying to figure out how to restring a acustic bass. i guess same rules apply

  • hey, i need help this week I broke my High E string three times, I have an acoustic guitar with steel strings and each time I tune my guitar the string breaks, does anybody knows why is this happening?

  • @RenzoCapurro Its very possible the string is getting caught up in the saddle(on the bridge) try filing it abit wider NOT DEEPER with a fine piece of sandpaper, also check the tunning machine post to see that it is clear of any string wrappings from previous strings....

  • Comment removed

  • do you know how to properly tune a guitar if not get a guitar tuner they work wonders

  • i have a guitar with a steel bridge with bars that go to the bottom of the guitar and latch there, the strings are attached under neath the steel, the guitar is about 20-27 yrs old, and i ainnt buying a new one, its older than me. and i just need to play it, any sudgestions?

  • "the pin usually comes out quite easily."

and what if it doesn't? broke the high e string (AGAIN) the other day and i can't get the pin out, not even if i put the string through like he does... ahhhn anybody know what to do?

  • pliers. mine was just stubborn. the rest I just pulled right out, like he said.

  • The string winder he's using (and lots of other string winders) have a slot in the end that will pull out the pin.

Otherwise, you can carefully use pliers or (preferably) wire cutters to work it straight up and out. With wire cutters, you can use the bridge as a fulcrum.

  • some string winders, like the dunlop one i have, have a kinda curve thing that you can stick right up under the bridge pin and pull it out. otherwise, i would suggest a pro do it.

  • awesome

  • thnx so much

  • haha I can't believe I had to watch this. I've been a serious guitar player for 4 years and I've never restrung an acoustic.

    Anyways, thanks!

  • mean youve got the skills to not break a string !

  • Excellent! This is far better, worked great on my mandolin, even as light as the LEO10's, really thin. No more poking holes in my fingers!!

    Thanks again.

  • LOL!

  • i have got an steel stringed accoustic and the g string snapped on the day i brought it and this helped but i dont no what strings to get help me plz :)

  • @visitmyworld: I am an electric player, I use Ernie Ball's Regular Slinky on them, I don't know if they would be okay on an acoustic, anyone care to tell me if they do?

  • I've used Ernie Ball Regular Slinky on an epiphone acoustic...sounded just fine. Recorded with it as well :)

  • get prohsper bronze i kno spelled it wrong but i gote min on and there beautifull

  • I'm not much of a guitar-expert, but I thought taking all the strings off at once fucks with the tension and isnt good for the guitar?

  • only if you leave it alone for a couple days if your playing it its fine

  • i was thinkin that too

  • This is not a very good instructional video. He forgot to mention the tip of graphite/lead in the nut before re-stringing to prevent friction. Also, no mention of stretching strings?? I would not recommend the threading through and under of the string. It's ok for the bass strings, but anything from a G up and you're asking for string breakage.

  • Thank You. Your instructions are clear and I changed the strings for the first time...no problem!

  • i had restringing

  • I agree!

Best strings ever! I use EXP13 Custom light extended play 80/20 bronze strings. I will never use a different guitar string on a acoustic guitar ever again! It was like $1.50 more than other crap guitar strings I used to use, these sound so good! Crisp sounding or something I can't explain it. And they last WAY way longer! Seriously,I would guess they lasted as long as about 8 pairs of my old crap strings. Good job D'Addario! I'm one happy customer and will buy from you again and again!

  • have you ever tried elixir nanoweb?

  • the are THE best

  • Comment removed

  • i've got an acoustic fender...with d'addario strings....when i bend the strings....especially the G and D..they kinda scratch...i don't know how to explain that...but most likely ..if i keep on bending they will finaly break...this happened to me with some lame strings...and i didn't expect this tqo happen with these strings...

  • Comment removed

  • maybe its not the strings , maybe its the way they were strung , if that made any sense xP

  • The Best Strings Ever Made!!!

  • thanks you saved my e string

  • Wow, that looks very simple. Since I'm changing my first set of strings this weekend, I hope it really is this painless!

  • Useful video, thanks! Quick, simple and the best/easiest method I've seen so far.

Does anyone know what the song is in the background as well?
