Corelli is by far better, as is Jon Vickers. Vocal colour and passion, lacking in the over-rated Del Monaco. To make a comparison: Del Monaco is the histrionic Olivier to the precise intelligent genius of Richard Burton. With Del Monaco it's all facade and emoting. With Corelli and Vickers, it's grindingly from the heart. As for Domingo et al. - understudies.
what is all this talk of Domingo being even near Del Monaco. Domingo is a great total musician, but a sub par/barley adequate voice for almost every role. He is not even a real spinto, he is a lyric with bad high notes and a strangles kemit the frog standard neck tie tenor sound. Del Monaco Roars like a lion, true italian Dramatic Tenor with Ring everywhere.
As great as Domingo is, he was a spinto...never a true dramatic tenor like Del
Monaco or Corelli. Mario wasn't always the most refined singer, but remember, dynamics are relative to the individual voice. Mario's MF was Domingo's FF. Next to Otello, Canio is the most dramatic tenor role in the Italian rep. Loud, louder, and loudest is often necessary in the dramatic tenor roles to be heard over the heavy orchestration. .
This is verismo after all, not art song.
The voice itself was big, dark and impressive, but I find his way of singing, his taste, his lack of musicality and his over-the-top acting and phrasing absolutely ANNOYING!
In the l960s I was an usher. Heard all the great singers at the Met except del Monaco and Callas. I suspect del Monaco sounded even better live. I know Corelli did. It is really amazing that two such similar tenors should have been around at the same time. I think Tucci only made two studio recordings. Can be found on live recordings however. Wonderful soprano.
Del Monaco is overwhelming here. My surprise is Tucci. For a long time, I had thought her voice rather small. Now I realize that her voice was simply smaller than Tebaldi's, Rysanek's, or Stella's, but much larger than many, especially recent "spinto" sopranos. As Nedda, she might be too strong for Pavarotti's or even Domingo's Canio. For Del Monaco, she is a perfect match.
I can't judge his vocal skills (which however in my opinion seem to be more than average);IMHO the strong point of this performance is acting.
I have seen this opera hundered times, but rarely i attended a show where the singers were actually playing as MDM does in this case, and Pagliacci NEEDS to be acted!.
In my opinion there are no "better" or "worse" singers;every singer has his own good sides. Being "the best" in every aspect of the vast "art of singing" would be impossible.

Get some reissues of Peerce in opera and listen to the stuff on youtube and ask yourself why would that voice sing second fiddle to DelMonaco's braying at the moon or something. Peerce was a great singer with a great voice.
How anyone can say that MDM was not the greatest Canio amazes me - i think that even his acting and expression is great considering the emphsis on acting is a lot greater in modern day opera than was the case back then....
Better Domingo? O my god! I can't believe that you think this!
Mario is the best Canio in History. Many people that heard him live at MET in this opera admit that he was better than Caruso. In Del Monaco voice is the fire, the brightness of a vocal magnificence. Domingo, in my opinion is only a good singer, not a LIRIC GIANT as Mario.
baritolo: What people thought that DelMonaco was better than Caruso. References please!!! The critics never warmed to DelMonaco's constant ffff braying to put it kindly. When Bing was pushed into a corner by DelMonaco overDelMonaco's bitching about Corelli guess who won. As to your hero try the live Stiffelio recording its awful.
@baritolo I do belive Domingo is far better than Del Monaco, not only singing Canio, but also as Otello and many more roles. As a singer Domingo is much more better, more musicality, much more better vocal line, expresion (not exageration as Del Monaco always), more coloring... the vocalitity in Domingo has more corpo, it´s not as big as Del Monaco, not squillante as Del MOnaco´s in the high note, but has much more virtues vocally, and his singing is by far better.
@cfreetenor Usually people just listen the most commercial voices. So, do not be amaded if someone tell u Paul Potts is a better Calaf than MDM. I do agree with u, Domingo is just a voice with not enough beauty nor passion. MDM is the best tenor ever.
@gonzalordm You obviously have the right to prefer any one singer over another. However,I think that most of the spinto&dramatic roles that Domingo sings are just to big for his voice. Therefore he must apply musicality& a softer vocal line & expression, because he does not have the Dramatic capability to sing Forza, Otello,Pagliacci,Carmen,Manon,Chenier,Aida, which wether you like it or not were signature roles for DelMonaco.MDM also has beautiful diction&phrasing&his recitatives are masterful.
@gonzalordm Domingo alsostrangles his high notes&shortens his phrases when singing the heavier roles because the tessitura is too high for him.I saw Domingo in Pagliacci some years back. He was hardly audible& he was straining significantly.PD sounds good when singing operas like Traviatta Butterfly& Rigoletto which are more suited for him,but he really can't compete with DelMonaco Corelli Tucker Gigli Campagnano Volpi Merli&Fillipeschi, which are voices that are much more dynamic than Domingo's
@baritolo - I have compared both, Corelli's and del Monaco's renditions against that of Domingo. Aside from the voice quality, itself, neither can get close to the phrasing and acting the part the way Domingo does in this piece. Domingo "acts" the voice and the phrasing in a more "modern" acting (i.e. smarter) level that makes his feelings far more real and "believable" than either del Monaco's or Corelli's. And, BTW, Corelly and del Monaco are my favorite tenors (including Alfredo Kraus).
@Reinaldo146 And again the same Cliché as always, Del Monaco is louder but Domingo sings smarter bla bla... Del Monaco has the voice for this and Domingo not, its so simple. The "sings smarter" thing is a ridiculous excuse for a voice which is not made for 80% of the opera prostitutes "repertory".
@Reinaldo146 IsawPDin this opera in circa1995.He was very dissapointing. He was hardly audible&was squeezing in the passagio&high notes.Del Monaco's phrasing and diction were always impeccable.PDalso left the2nd B-natural in No Pagliaccio Non Son,which I thought was also transposed to a B-flat.Furthermore Del Monaco brings a Dramatic interpretation&immense vocal line thatPDcould never compete with.I don't think Domingo's voice was suited for this dramatic opera as well as many other spinto roles
i love that little walk Mario does at the beginning
Aldo is such a funny clown in this preformance too. He also does a little dance at 5:08-5:10. If you watch closly at 4:58, he hands something to another clown - my guess something that fell from the table
allowing him to use a modified version of melochio technique...he knew how to combine and get the most of his charming and warm vocal tone...but monaco.....was by far a more complete manhood singer.....all that intensity and power to the service of singing....
corelli used a different approach than del monaco....monaco was a stream of fire....and for ended his vocal approach was base on bruta force....sure hi was pushing his ass very hard on this....corelli natural gifts perhaps were better than monaco....
too many people compare...monaco and corelli...is my personal...opion,,,that corelli was more hansome, good looking, bigger, and too many james bond 007 physical qualities...but in regard to singing...del monaco was far better...first at all....continue
my personal hunch? Corelli might have had more talent, as evidenced by his mind-blowing venture into french opera.
I think they are equal in the grand scheme, there greatness being different. Del Monaco mastered the heavy Italian (basically Verdi) rep like none other. Corelli did big italian rep, and french repertoire, no other voice anywhere near that size has done anything like it before or since.
we should also try and be grateful they ever existed. I'd kill for a tenor half as good now...

@rinarix1 There were not any speech distortions as his diction was impeccable throughout his career as his speaking voice was also very fluent and his elocution was perfect.Phrasing wa impeccable and DelMonaco interpretid like a dramatic emotional tenor .
I love Del Monaco. I grew up watching Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras, but my father loved Gigli. BUT he always said he adminred Del Monaco for his drama expertise and you see it here. My father, who saw Del Monaco in Otello and Pagliacci, said that Del Monaco had two volume levels--loud and louder :-)
MDM Probably along with Corelli the 2 Greatest dramatic Tenors that have ever lived and this performance proves it. MDM at the very highest of his Career. Bravo Mario
famous tape. i just never thought i would see this performance with my own eyes. tears in my eyes.would fellini have happened without this kind of performance.
This is Del Monaco at his best.Nobody comes even close.A magnificent cast of singers that unfortunately
does not exist nowadays.Gabriella Tucci is a great soprano with a beautiful, and she is physically beautiful too and Aldo Protti perhaps the smallest baritone in stature but what a great voice he has.
This is what I call real opera and not the garbage we seen today with all of these mediocre singers that need two microphones in order to sing
"That Woman" is Gabriella Tucci who can be heard on numerous recordings if you so desire. She was one of the leading sopranos in the verismo repertoire.

@gonzalordm This was an extremely ignorant comment - even Domingo would agree that he doesn't even approach MDM.
cfreetenor 8 months ago
@cfreetenor Usually people just listen the most commercial voices. So, do not be amaded if someone tell u Paul Potts is a better Calaf than MDM. I do agree with u, Domingo is just a voice with not enough beauty nor passion. MDM is the best tenor ever.
melkruspe 7 months ago
@gonzalordm You obviously have the right to prefer any one singer over another. However,I think that most of the spinto&dramatic roles that Domingo sings are just to big for his voice. Therefore he must apply musicality& a softer vocal line & expression, because he does not have the Dramatic capability to sing Forza, Otello,Pagliacci,Carmen,Manon,Chenier,Aida, which wether you like it or not were signature roles for DelMonaco.MDM also has beautiful diction&phrasing&his recitatives are masterful.
sugarbist 7 months ago
@gonzalordm Domingo alsostrangles his high notes&shortens his phrases when singing the heavier roles because the tessitura is too high for him.I saw Domingo in Pagliacci some years back. He was hardly audible& he was straining significantly.PD sounds good when singing operas like Traviatta Butterfly& Rigoletto which are more suited for him,but he really can't compete with DelMonaco Corelli Tucker Gigli Campagnano Volpi Merli&Fillipeschi, which are voices that are much more dynamic than Domingo's
sugarbist 7 months ago 2
@baritolo - I have compared both, Corelli's and del Monaco's renditions against that of Domingo. Aside from the voice quality, itself, neither can get close to the phrasing and acting the part the way Domingo does in this piece. Domingo "acts" the voice and the phrasing in a more "modern" acting (i.e. smarter) level that makes his feelings far more real and "believable" than either del Monaco's or Corelli's. And, BTW, Corelly and del Monaco are my favorite tenors (including Alfredo Kraus).
Reinaldo146 7 months ago
@Reinaldo146 And again the same Cliché as always, Del Monaco is louder but Domingo sings smarter bla bla... Del Monaco has the voice for this and Domingo not, its so simple. The "sings smarter" thing is a ridiculous excuse for a voice which is not made for 80% of the opera prostitutes "repertory".
Allzumenschliches44 7 months ago
@Reinaldo146 IsawPDin this opera in circa1995.He was very dissapointing. He was hardly audible&was squeezing in the passagio&high notes.Del Monaco's phrasing and diction were always impeccable.PDalso left the2nd B-natural in No Pagliaccio Non Son,which I thought was also transposed to a B-flat.Furthermore Del Monaco brings a Dramatic interpretation&immense vocal line thatPDcould never compete with.I don't think Domingo's voice was suited for this dramatic opera as well as many other spinto roles

false!!!!...corelli was the last canio..

Corelli was one of the greatest tenors ever, but Canio is a role he didn't make a real mark on actually...

i love that little walk Mario does at the beginning
Aldo is such a funny clown in this preformance too. He also does a little dance at 5:08-5:10. If you watch closly at 4:58, he hands something to another clown - my guess something that fell from the table

allowing him to use a modified version of melochio technique...he knew how to combine and get the most of his charming and warm vocal tone...but monaco.....was by far a more complete manhood singer.....all that intensity and power to the service of singing....

corelli used a different approach than del monaco....monaco was a stream of fire....and for ended his vocal approach was base on bruta force....sure hi was pushing his ass very hard on this....corelli natural gifts perhaps were better than monaco....
ahtenor 3 years ago
too many people compare...monaco and corelli...is my personal...opion,,,that corelli was more hansome, good looking, bigger, and too many james bond 007 physical qualities...but in regard to singing...del monaco was far better...first at all....continue
ahtenor 3 years ago
Del Monaco was better than Corelli.
berto1999 3 years ago
Yes, on the stage he was more exciting, Corelli a better studio voice and a more beautiful tone.
GermanOperaSinger 3 years ago
my personal hunch? Corelli might have had more talent, as evidenced by his mind-blowing venture into french opera.
I think they are equal in the grand scheme, there greatness being different. Del Monaco mastered the heavy Italian (basically Verdi) rep like none other. Corelli did big italian rep, and french repertoire, no other voice anywhere near that size has done anything like it before or since.
we should also try and be grateful they ever existed. I'd kill for a tenor half as good now...

rickyelmeio 3 years ago
No Infatti ti do ragione!!!!!Quello che ti ho detto prima""e campa cient'ann"""e un detto napoletano che vuol dire che hai detto una cosa santa cioe giusta
enzoonapulitan 3 years ago
BariTenoreDram 3 years ago

rinarix1 2 years ago
rinarix1 2 years ago
